- As of 24w13a, stacking raid farms are broken
- Mojang changed the way bad omen works which effectively kills stacking raid farms. Note that this is still all subject to change and might not make it into the release.
- What did they change?
- - Instead of illager captains applying the bad omen affect when killed, they now drop an ominous bottle. When consumed, the player will receive the bad omen effect.
- - When entering a village, the bad omen effect will turn into the raid omen effect and will be applied for 30 seconds. During this time, the player can consume milk to cancel the summoning of the raid. After the raid omen effect expires the raid will start.
- - Some stuff was added with bad omen in the trial chambers but nobody who is reading this really cares about that.
- How does this break stacking raid farms?
- The real killer to stacking raid farms is the 30 second timer after you enter a village with bad omen. During this timer the player cannot start any other raids which effectively limits the speed of a raid farm to one raid every 30 seconds. The fact that you have to consume potions to start a raid is only inconvenience but would not completely kill stacking raid farms.
- One common misconception I see is that raids now start at exactly the position where the player obtains the raid omen. This is not true. Raids still start at villager POIs just like they used to before. I believe the misleading patch notes and misinformation from xisumavoid's video on the snapshot have caused this misconception.
- Why did Mojang make this change?
- Let me make this clear, Mojang did NOT do this specifically to kill stacking raid farms. These changes were made to expand on the new trial chambers, making them optionally more difficult for better rewards. They have considered what would happen raid farms with the changes and are (supposedly) keeping an eye out for community feedback.
- How am I supposed to get redstone now?
- Just wait. This is the first snapshot to introduce this change and it's not unlikely that it will be tweaked in the future.
- In the case that stacking raid farms do not work in the full release, we have three other options:
- - Witch farms: Requires the mob switch to be off and is really slow. A quad witch hut with looting 3 should get you somewhere between 2 and 3 thousand redstone per hour.
- - Villager gifting farms: Needs a ton of villagers to have decent rates which makes it quite laggy. As of today (3/28/2024) I cannot recommend building any of the existing designs that I know of.
- - Manually obtaining redstone through trading or mining: The method for casuals
- What about non-stacking raid farms?
- The rates for raid farms have essentially been capped at 560 redstone dust per hour, stacking or not. They still may be a valid option for getting emeralds or totems, being capped at almost 8k emeralds and around 800 totems per hour. This is assuming you are able to spawn at least a level 2 raid every 30 seconds exactly.
- Is there any way around the 30 second timer?
- Probably not. After taking a look at the code, the raid will start when the duration of the raid omen effect reaches 1 tick. This is the only thing that will spawn a raid, and the only way for raid omen to be applied is to enter a village with bad omen, which gives you raid omen for the hard coded value of 600 ticks (30 seconds). One suggestion I had was somehow giving the effect to another entity but as far as I know there's no way to get another entity to drink the potion, and the only entity that can start a raid is players.
