  3. Why Prefer Textfiles?

  9. Textfiles are a universal way to share knowledge and
  10. document anything that an intelligent entity wishes to
  11. express, which can be saved and viewable for generations.
  12.
  13. Textfiles are files that contain human readable characters
  14. in the ASCII encoding (Unicode is rising and replacing
  15. this). The ASCII characters are characters 32 to 126
  16. (decimal). The font of textfiles is usually Courier New,
  17. Lucida Console, Terminal, or System fonts; these fonts are
  18. chosen because of widespread availability on most systems,
  19. including the old ones. It has to be a font that everyone
  20. has and read. It is also traditional as this font(s) has
  21. stuck with textfiles and text editors for decades.
  22.
  23. For generations in the computer world, many
  24. users have written, read, and distributed textfiles.
  25. The content of textfiles varies greatly; you can write
  26. about anything you want. Some examples include (in abc
  27. order): Adventures, Anarchy, Art, BBS, Computers,
  28. Conspiricies, Drugs, Food, Games, Hacking, Humor,
  29. Internet, Law, Mass Media, Music, News, Occult,
  30. Phreaking, Piracy, Politics, Programming, School,
  31. Role Playing, Science, Sex, UFO's, and Viruses.
  32.
  33. Another advantage to textfiles is that it does not
  34. take any special software to read textfiles. In fact you
  35. can read textfiles through a system command line.
  36. And textfiles open up rather quickly with the simplest
  37. text editor instead of using some bulky, ram-eating
  38. word processor (that applies unfavored defaults such as
  39. automatically formatting the text read from a file, thus
  40. ruining the character count and ascii art that may be
  41. found in that text file) to load every time you open a
  42. textfile.
  43.
  44. One of the biggest advantages is that text files take up
  45. less space on a disk and in the real world too!
  46. In the real world, many people are still in the old
  47. tradition of using paper, ink, lead (pencils),
  48. paper clips, pencil sharpeners, erasers, white out,
  49. printers, and other office equipment. This waste of
  50. resources is no longer needed since we have computers
  51. which can hold thousands of times more text and
  52. memory than what we can store (and the time it take to
  53. write it) it on paper and other physical things that take
  54. up space and waste natural resources. So why do we still
  55. do it?
  56.
  57. My main point is that textfiles are simple, fast, and
  58. accessible to everyone which is the best way to spread
  59. text based information when it comes to storing them as
  60. files.
  61.
  62. If you don't have a text editor, then do one of the
  63. following:
  64.
  65. A) Download a text editor
  66. B) Read the text editor through a command shell
  67. C) Make a text editing program
  68. D) Do nothing
  69.
  70. A great place to find textfiles are at:
