  75. Bio:
  76.
  77. Erica Aureliana was born among the many illegitimate children of the infamous Alonso Giacondo da Vancia, a high-up clergyman in the Church of Inviolable Light. Alonso was infamous among the echelons of high Vancian society for his appetite for women, especially those younger and fitter than the aged, portly man, for which he became known as the Fat Hound of Vancia. The natural children of Alonso were often abandoned to their mothers, with one or two fortunate souls legitimized as heirs to the Giacondo house, and many less so having nothing but a customary lump sum paid to their parents to keep them silent. Alonso was eventually brought down after he inadvertently bedded the daughter of a powerful merchant from Nicca. The resulting political fallout between Nicca and Vancia as Alonso's many escapades were (officially) revealed to the city was immense and Niccan officials almost bayed for Alonso's blood, causing the city authorities to "suggest" Alonso step down from his position in the Church and leave Vancia for fear of retribution. Alonso now lives in ignominy in one of the minor city-states elsewhere in the Tibberine lands, living off what remains of the riches he did not pass to his legitimised heirs in Vancia and occasionally plotting returns to Vancia to reclaim the position that had been taken from him.
  78.
  79. Erica, of course, was not one of these legitimised heirs. Born to Mariella Fiore di Bonaventura, the pious second daughter of the impoverished militant house of Bonaventura, and Giovanni Aurelio di Palladino, eldest son of the mercantile Palladino family originating from Floria, Eric was fortunate in that Giovanni elected to raise Erica as his own daughter, sparing her the fate of being cast out or worse as a bastard. Mariella raised Erica as well as she could; to be kind, to be true to herself, and to be faithful to the Church. After all, to Mariella, even if the Church's officials were much like Alonso, the faith itself was unsullied. Erica thus grew up an adherent of the faith despite her natural father's lack thereof. Though the rumours around the House of Palladino circulated that Erica was not the biological daughter of Giovanni, Erica was very much fortunate that she inherited her looks primarily from her mother. Erica, for her part, had always been aware of who her true father was; Alonso may have fathered her, but Giovanni was her father. She refused to have anything to do with Alonso, as did her parents. However, owing to the rumours around Erica's parentage and the fact that Mariella was a rumoured "companion" of Alonso, made a future as a socialite in the decadent court life of Vancia untenable for Erica, despite her good upbringing and piety to the Church. Her parents may have had been good to her, but this was reality; the (rumoured) bastard child of a disgraced Church official was hardly ideal marriage material, even they happened to be reasonably attractive, learned and the legitimate heir to a fairly respectable noble house.
  80.
  81. Wishing not to cause her parents many more problems because of her status, she eventually entered the service of the Church as a bodyguard to church officials in the infamously dangerously decadent court life of Vancia. Braving the physical, mental and political hazards of the court, from poisonings to scandals, Erica grew experienced with Vancian politics, managing to deftly avoid suffering much the same fate her mother had. However, protecting her charges in the court grew more and more difficult, especially with many of her charges being just as corrupt. She grew more convinced by the day that she did not belong in Vancia, or indeed anywhere within the Tibberine political scene, bodyguard, aristocrat or no. Indeed, her mind grew heavier with guilt as she began to question if she had the moral obligation to protect her clerical charges from assassination attempts and blackmail attempts when they themselves were just as guilty, if not worse. An incident where a sleazy Church official, after she saved him from an assassination attempt during a party in the latrines through means of crossbow bolt to the gut, attempted to recruit her into assassinating the family of his would-be assassin, was the trigger for Erica to put her foot down. She told him that she would in no uncertain terms enable this behavior any longer, quit her position on the spot and left the palace where the party was held in disgust.
  82.
  83. Having growing exhausted with the court, and no longer wishing to live a life that implicitly enabled the corruption of the upper Church, Erica bade farewell to her parents and left Vancia with a caravan of traders heading towards Floria. For a time, she began adventuring around the Tibberine Republics, her services as a skilled guard and mage put into play for the sake of those less fortunate than herself or protecting caravans from bandits. Erica sought to live by the values by which she was raised, even if those who were supposed to lead the faith did not, her faith being one of the few things she could rely on in the cutthroat world of the Tibberine Republics. However, the concerns of money came into play; without the steady income of being a bodyguard for a rich posting, or the prospect of the dowry of an aristocratic husband, her prospects did not look good, but turning back to Vancia was not an option. Erica continued her service as the bodyguard of various nobles, firstly in northern Tibberine, and then southern Angeborten, always being dissatisfied with the nobility for reminding her far too much of her home city and always leaving their service within a matter of months, though with far more grace and respect than she had left her first employer's service. Eventually, she sought work with the Lichteisen family, not expecting much different; she'd heard little of the Lichteisens, but they were asking for experienced bodyguards, and Erica had more than enough guarding experience in the most dangerous court in the world; if nothing else, it'd be a fair sum of money to keep her going until she found a place she belonged.
