  5. Oprah Winfrey, in her acceptance speech for the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award at the Golden Globes, demanded an end to sexual misconduct. Winfrey’s purpose was to encourage women’s empowerment movements. She adopts an assertive tone in order to motivate change in her audience at and watching the Golden Globes, specifica20lly little girls. In her acceptance speech, Oprah Winfrey successfully promotes the Me Too and other women’s rights movements by Allusion, builds credibility, Hyperboles put things into perspective on how they feel, and Anaphora is for details.
  6. Oprah Winfrey uses Allusion to build up her credibility. One of the things she mentions is the past winner of the award, “In 1982, Sidney received the Cecil B. DeMille award right here at the Golden Globes.” This is building credibility by talking about her knowledge of the past winners and why that was significant. Her knowing this and alluding to it shows what it really means to her and how it affects her. She then goes on to say that she hopes there are some little black girls watching at home as she gives this speech and is awarded with the Cecil B. DeMille award and hopes that it inspires them the way it inspires her. Another example that her using allusion was so good for her credibility was when she said “She opened the envelope and said five words that literally made history “The winner is Sidney Poitier”.” This shows that she was a long-time watcher of these Golden Globe Awards and has been hit with something because of it. This is so good for her credibility because she is talking about something that she can relate to. Sidney Poitier was the first black person to ever win this award and it changed history now that she has one the same award she is looking to add the history and make a change. So being up to their she chooses to talk about something that she is involved in and has personal experience with, Sexual Misconduct. This is very powerful and is a very sensitive subject for her and she is tired of seeing women say “Me too” and wants to put an end to that movement.
  7. Another tool that she used that is powerful is hyperbole. For example when she was talking about watching the Golden Globes and seeing her mom come in the room “Bone tired” this is talking about how hard her mom worked to feed all her kids and put a roof over their heads. This shows what it was like for her mom raising these kids. Without this, you would never have thought about her mom and what it was like for a black women raising kids. This is really hard-hitting when you first read it because they have it the hardest and we don't have it like she does.
  8. The last thing that Oprah uses is Anaphora she uses anaphora to show and zoom in on specific details. A good example of Oprah using Anaphora is when she is talking about these hard-working women. “They are domestic workers and farm workers. They are working in and they work in restaurants and they're in academia, engineering, medicine and science. They're part of the world of tech and politics and they're our athletes in the Olympics and they're our soldiers in the military.” This is very powerful and shows that these people are the ones you can't even notice it is a lot of people. Oprah using this shows you and really opens your eyes to what these situations are like.
  9. In conclusion, all of these rhetorical devices that Oprah used helped her deliver a great speech and really get her point across. She used Allusion to build her credibility and then Hyperboles to show you what things were like and then Anaphora to show you specific details.
