  1. Important preliminary info:
  2.
  3. > TF2 starts on Friday and Saturday at 8:00 PM EST (12:00 AM GMT)
  4. > Variety night starts on Sunday at the same time
  5. > Contact the main TF2 host if you're interested in hosting something
  6. > The current host of the 2020 party /v/an is yknow: http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198334082754
  7.
  8. What do I need to host?
  9.
  10. > Some type of dedicated server (a VPS works too)
  11. > A separate server for fastDL if custom content is being used
  12. > Basic knowledge of server management (port forwarding, installing dependencies, etc.)
  13.
  14. A VPS (virtual private server) is like $5-10 USD. Check out Kimsufi, OVH, or NFOservers for cheap yet proven options.
  15. Hosting from home is generally a bad idea, especially if you want to host regularly. Even if you pay your Jewish ISP hundreds of dollars per month for a "gigabit fibre connection", everyone who joins your server who isn't from your immediate area will lag, and your connection will start to shit itself with over 24 players.
  16. If you want to host something semi-regularly, look into a VPS.
  17.
  18. What should I host?
  19.
  20. Mandatory requirements:
  21. > Supports 32 or more players
  22. > Easy to install
  23. > Free to play (Sven Co-op)
  24. > Easy to pirate (Unreal Tournament 2004)
  25. > Everyone already has the game installed (L4D2, Garry's Mod, most Valve games)
  26.
  27. Recommended:
  28. > Don't choose games that require an account other than Steam, such as Trackmania
  29. > Voice chat is a bonus
  30. > Game should be easy to get into for a new player
  31.
  32. In general, most Source games/Source mods fit this criteria.
  33.
  34. How should I host?
  35.
  36. > Test, test, test. Spend time setting up the server. Don't do it the day of the event.
  37. > Put a password on the server if possible. It should be the usual.
  38. > Be a good admin. Don't be overbearing, and try not to abuse your admin powers too much, but don't be someone who does literally nothing when shit's on fire.
  39.
  40.
  41. Thread format (follow this so out-of-touch jannies don't think this is a raid and delete it):
  42.
  43. Main body: ("It's Sunday etc.", what's being hosted, and any flavor you want to add)
  44. IP: (host's IP)
  45. Password: ("the usual" marked in spoiler text)
  46. Link to download: (if cracked or outside of Steam)
  47. Maps or other custom content: (link to the maps in case the FastDL fails)
  48. Variety Night: (link to this pastebin in spoiler text)
