- Homework: from Tuesday’s handout (starts with “News article in a popular business publication”), answer the questions about the first two readings
- ---
- SAT verbal practice test - On the SAT (unlike the TOEFL), many of the questions are about making grammatical corrections to sentences to improve writing.
- p. 18 - Should these two words be changed (to choice B-D), or is the paragraph already correct?
- 1 B (a “true noun” is better here than a gerund)
- 2 B (This is a consequence of the previous sentence, not a contrast to it.)
- (“Previously” would need a sentence in the past perfect, to indicate that it had happened before something else.)
- p. 19 - question 4 is about style more than grammar (the SAT has many questions like this--maybe two answers both make sense, but you have to choose the best one)
- 3 A (“This trend” is the subject, which is singular -> has)
- The answers with “which” mean the main sentence is just:
- “This trend, combined with increasing accessibility of information via the Internet.”
- The correct answer has as the main sentence:
- “This trend has led some to claim that librarianship is in decline as a profession.”)
- 4 A (It explains “nonprint formats”, which is relevant information to add to this sentence.)
- 5 D (The meaning of “them” and “their” is not clear in this sentence, which doesn’t include anything about the people who do the circulating.)
- 6 D (Parallel structure with “compiling” and “updating”)
- _____ and _____
- _____, _____, and _____
- - each “_____” should have the same grammatical structure
