- Bad Case of Sequelitis (and Mistitled Too) <br/><br/>WHAT SUCKED ABOUT THIS MOVIE<br/><br/>1) Title. When you have a number after a title, that usually means "sequel", not "prequel". Better titles could've been "Death Race: The Beginning" or "Death Race: Birth of Frankenstein".<br/><br/>2) Lead character. Another criminal with a heart of gold, only this one has somehow managed to not only make a career out of it (being a criminal, not a hero), but earn the trust of a crime boss (Sean Bean doing a ridiculous accent of some kind). Right.<br/><br/>3) Plot. If you have a movie about vehicular carnage, give us some ASAP, do not wait for an hour to finally get to it, okay?<br/><br/>4) Logicality of plot. I know in action movies real-world facts have no place there; if you want a revolver to fire 7 bullets without reloading, then it can. But when you have a woman hanging on to a speeding car wrenching a Minigun—-which weighs over 200 pounds—-out of its mount, pointing it backwards and firing it without being knocked off the car, that stretches plausibility past the breaking point for me.<br/><br/>5) There will be another sequel / prequel. What will it be about?<br/><br/>WHAT WAS GOOD ABOUT THIS MOVIE<br/><br/>(Crickets chirping) <br/><br/>RECOMMENDATIONS<br/><br/>Watch any other "Death Race" movie, your time will be much better spent. I personally prefer "Death Race" over "Death Race 2000", but that's just me.
- This movie was more of a prequel to 'Death Race' than 'MI3' was a sequel to 'MI2'. But some of the reviewers are right. The title is misleading. They should have called it 'Origins' or something. And what is this hullabaloo over acting. The writers gave the characters depth and the actors did their job well. People comment as if they have sat through 'Inside The Actors Studio' sessions. Surely one the most recommendable direct to DVD fair.<br/><br/>The director has managed to pull through with whatever smaller budget he had to work with. Only flaw if you are looking for one is that, the characters are too similar looking to that of Death race. The makers should have been brave enough to break the mold and bring a little bit of freshness.
- Yes, this is about how the Death Race was started and the origins of Frankenstein. This all gets explained in the sequel, <a href="/title/tt1988591/">Death Race: Inferno (2013)</a> (2013). Big Bill does not appear in the first film either due to his being killed in this film. He assaults his female navigator, she responds by stabbing him in the eye, shoving him out of the truck and then running over his head. Machine Gun Joe takes over the pickup truck. In this film, September Jones says that she found a new warden for the prison (Hennessy). Jones also says that Hennessy would probably take credit for inventing Death Race if she wasn't around. This was likely a way to create a continuity for the films as Joan Allen either was unavailable or declined to be in the straight-to-video prequel that shows how Death Race was invented. The Unrated version features four extended scenes that include some more nudity or sexual content.
