  1. 3 am
  2.
  3. The rain patters against the windshield like the tapping of a bored classmate during a lecture. Merging onto the interstate, its empty but for the night drivers supplying far off cities, like the circuits that bind society together. No one else should be out. The car hums a steady tune as it zips across the lanes, gliding past the dim streetlights. Alt-rock plays off the radio, and even the host has signed off, leaving an idle stream of lo-fi beats.

  5. You feel a touch from beside you. Ah yes, she's still asleep. Slumped on your shoulder, she could only be trying to sleep off the last party. No idea what went on there, but she seemed distraught. Was probably used by another guy, and was thrown away again. You keep telling her to focus on her studies, but hey, parties are fun after all, and its college.

  7. Remember that time, ages ago? You hoped, you dreamed, for that chance. But she would always laugh, and say that she wasn't nearly smart enough to date a guy like you. How silly you were back then. Heh, when it comes to love, you don't know where to start. But you could be her friend. And in the end, well, being a friend lets you support her more, anyway. You smile. She won't be awake for hours, you'll probably end up leaving a copy of the math homework for her in the morning. And in class, she'll let you know what you missed while you were working on that boring project you keep talking about. And you'll nod, smile, and chastise her about her relationships, while she acts insulted and pretends to listen to the old professor. Anf you'll pretend to listen too, but your thoughts will wander back to this time and this car, while a bored classmate taps his pencil like the pattering of rain on a windshield. You'll be pretty tired too, won't you? But it's fine, after all, what are friends for?
