  1. "Great! I'll write that down..." Reaching up before taking off one of the smaller branches off their horns with a wince of pain before scribbling something down on a piece of bark all before stuffing it back into their shirt and that twig? Returned back to their horns before they froze.
  2.
  3. And ever so slowly turned towards Nidaz with a head tilt. "You hesitated...Oh! You wanna know about mother? Mother gave me the gift to converse with plants and make them grow like I can now! But, I can't visit mother easily. She lives far, far away...and waaaaaay up in the air!"
  4.
  5. To expand on that point? The young druid stood up ever so slightly and snapped their fingers with an open palm facing skyward. And from it came a tree growing till its leaves brushed the tops of the ceiling and stopped. Juust before turning towards Nidaz. "She lives in a tree...like i'll be soon! But its really, really tall...taller than I can make for sure! But I'll be able to get one of her books soon enough! I can teach you more about her when I get that book too! Or at least about some of her." Nodding their head once again before crossing their arms firmly as the tree withered down to ashes once again. Just before snacking upon those ashes.
  6.
  7. "I'm planning a get together to go meet her when i'm strong enough!"
  8. (Nym)
  9. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  10.
  11. A mental note was made. Looks like a new name was going to be on a long list of people he'd want to witness a humiliating death of.
  12.
  13. The situation wasn't optimal. But then, he did choose to go along willingly. Perhaps it would've been better off if he had just stayed within the Dreadwoods with the others at this point.
  14.
  15. "Huh... Never thought I'd say this... But the Dreadwoods now seem to hold more desirable conditions than this place does. Funny. Given how they actually appeared less civilized." he'd comment briefly. That was to say. He was basically calling Achyon barbaric.
  16.
  17. "Nonetheless. Whilst I frankly... Don't care in the slightest about remaining in Achyon. Might I ask that you opt against the collar? As with what I've already said. What reason do I have to flee? Where would I go? Back to the mountains I was exiled from?"
  18.
  19. Seems they were full of questions in spite of the reinforced idea of his current position here. But the matter of the collar was majorly, in his opinion, according to a simple matter of comfort. He did hate things that pressed tightly around the flesh.
  20. (Valamir)
  21. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  22.
  23. Maertock would appear like a flowing shadow from the darkness; the captain of the Deep Company and necromancer acolyte garbed all in black leather, arcanium plate, and ambient pirate swagger. It wasn't every day the reaver lord of the south coast left his demesne by the beach side, but then, it wasn't every day he had a chance to get a further scholastic overview of a subject that interested him.
  24.
  25. Especially one so important to his progress forward.
  26.
  27. "What a fine classroom you have here Professor Nidaz. Entirely and expertly scholastic. My last lesson was more of a basic overview of the importance of the heart and brain in the reanimation process, but I've been in need of a more advanced tutelage for some time."
  28.
  29. The captain would bob his head steadily as he removed his leather-bound journal, beginning to scribble on a fresh page as the necromancy student chuckled.
  30.
  31. "I am a trained doctor now. I am ready to learn the dark art in full, noble Nidaz."
  32. (Maertock Reave)
  33. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  34.
  35. Was he referring to some deity? Probably, now who, that was the question.. Well, it didn't matter much to be true, but it was interesting to know.. Heh.
  36.
  37. Tapping his right index finger against the wood of the table a few times, he would nod, "Very well, I think I understand now. And well, I'll be looking forward to it!"
  38.
  39. Any additional knowledge was welcome, regardless of the origin of such knowledge..
  40.
  41. Ah, he would remember something, which he would soon start to write down on pieces of paper he had on the table, using a pen.. Stuff that he needed to order from the Technomancers. But he would stop such an act, when listening to the prisoner once again speaking.
  42.
  43. "You will soon see the difference, we are much more civilized than most civilizations in Esshar! And well, the collar is just for guarantee.
  44.
  45. So we don't have many options! You'll have to use one." With that, he would shrug his shoulders again, re-writing some things on the piece of papers..
  46.
  47. Until an unusual guest had arrived, but one that Nidaz wanted to see for quite some time already! The pirate captain.
  48.
  49. "Maertock! Nice to see you finally decided to show up, I've been waiting for you for months to start our classes. Please, feel free around..
  50.
  51. This is our home, after all!" His voice would sound a little cheerful when he saw his student again, one of the few that he had, "We are going to start a class very, very soon! I'm just dealing with some
  52. little problems first.." He would look in the direction of Val, who was being kept sitting in the chair by a few undead..
  53. (Nidaz)
  54. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  55.
  56. Maertock would chuckle with ambient cheer as he listened to his professor regard the matter presently at hand for him; icy blue shark's eyes flicking across the room to the green haired one and the youth with a thoughtful tap of his chin. After a time, he'd nod firmly in approval with cheer.
  57.
  58. "I'd go with the fella's more lenient offer, kid. A collar is a lot less bad of a fate than bein' a necromancer's test subject. You're gettin' let off easy all things considered. He hasn't even tried to sew an extra arm onto you yet!"
  59.
  60. The Captain would bark out in dark laughter at that, slapping his sinewed chest as the blackened arcanium plate ambiently rattled; a nigh cacophony of jubilance as he took a long, considerate drag from his minty cigar.
  61.
  62. "I have arrived right in time then Professor. Business has kept me occupied; planning a kraken hunt takes work and manpower I've had to gather. Still, with the Company mostly rebuilt, things seemed to be going well enough to finally take you up on that lesson."
  63.
  64. Maertock would nod firmly at that.
  65.
  66. "I will master necroratsy. This is my vow."
  67. (Maertock Reave)
  68. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  69.
  70. "I don't think I can sit through a class but...glad to have you embedded in the forest! I'll come back for the blood when I get the acorns ready of course. Aand to finish growing your crops with love! Te-he-."
  71.
  72. Yet without further aduo? The druid rose from their position and gave a small bow to everyone in the room. All before approaching the desk and crouching down towards it slightly and knocking on it. "Pssst...I'm heading out this way mister desk. Send me to the big tree outside!"
  73.
  74. All before backing up, and running at, and through the desk. Almost as if they were actually traveling through wood itself. Maybe it was a trick, Or maybe...it was just how one who was more adapt at nature than others got around rapidly.
  75.
  76. Considering it was far, too much of a walk to go where they truly wanted.
  77. (Nym)
  78. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  79.
  80. Val, for once, smirked at the correlation between the mention of problems, and the gaze directed toward him, following up with a chuckle. And then? A second chuckle when they called themselves 'civilized'. If they truly were? The man didn't seem like a good representative of that.
  81.
  82. Given his right arm was already relatively free, with his present position, he tugged away the other one, and soon adopted a more relaxed postured, folding both arms behind his head. As much of a bother as it was to be collared- He didn't exactly have a means to resist against the Necromancer themselves, let alone the soldiers of Achyon.
  83.
  84. Then, he turned to the shark-man. "Actually it's both. Collared and being a relative lab-rat, according to this 'Nidaz', fellow.
  85.
  86. However. Now I myself am curious. What's this... 'Necroratsy' thing? I'd like to know..."
  87.
  88. If he was going to be stuck like an actual prisoner around here, he'd at least glean what he can.
  89. (Valamir)
  90. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  91.
  92. Now that Nym was gone, it would be one less thing to deal with. Thus, he could focus only on the prisoner and his pirate student.. A rather strange combination, if they stop to think about.
  93.
  94. "A Kraken? Fascinating! Well, I wish you a good hunt, my dear friend. I'm sure you will capture it or kill it.. And so make it become your puppet!" He would comment quickly, where in fact a creature like that could be quite a find.. To create a servant.
  95.
  96. A poweful one to be used.
  97.
  98. Moving his hand in the air, he would soon continue, "Well, he is both as himself said.. I intend to use him in my studies on the souls of living beings!
  99.
  100. I recently captured him.. Heh."
  101.
  102. Now.. 'Necroratcy'.. Heavens, Trik had even contaminated them, that was a curse.. Truly! But one that left things with a more humorous tone to say the least, who knows, perhaps with this, they would be averting the unwanted glances towards practitioners of such an art.
  103.
  104. That is good.
  105.
  106. "Necroratcy, Fleshcrafting, Necromancy.. All terms used to identify one thing. The study of the dead and how to bring them back to life.. Uh, kind of." His voice would echo in response to them..
  107.
  108. Furthermore, they still could not really bring people to life.. They could only use their bodies. But that was at least halfway there! So all good.
  109.
  110. Coughing lightly to clear his throat again, he continued, "Very well, Maertock! Tell me, what exactly did Trik teach you? I want to know everything in detail, so I don't repeat anything!"
  111. (Nidaz)
  112. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  113. Val changed his position, and disposition quite quickly. His arms swung overhead, before propping his elbows upwards, clasping his fingers together in a pyramid of sorts. He was most definitely intrigued.
  114.
  115. "Souls, you say?" he'd briefly question with a grin gradually replacing that scowl he seemed to be wearing for the past few hours. Given the value of a soul, according to a rather malicious woman he had met, was quite unfathomable, this may be a lovely opportunity to learn more about those himself.
  116.
  117. "Fascinating. Forgive this rather... Out-of-the-blue-request... But might I request to study such a topic as well whilst here? I'm more than certain anyone else would throw some tantrum or fit if I even brought up that kind of talk in other settlements...
  118.
  119. Though. Perhaps my own... Thinking... On the usage of souls is a bit geared toward... A different direction. Supposedly? To some, they are quite a valuable... Resource, per say." With that remark, he'd simply laugh in vague memory of what that woman from the forest spoke of in some cryptic lines.
  120.
  121. "And yes, you need not correct me in any manner- I understand I am in no position to be making requests. But I'd be a fool to not jump on the potential of gaining such knowledge."
  122. (Valamir)
  123. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  124.
  125. Maertock would click his serrated teeth together with cheer as the center of attention once more fell upon him, the Captain of the Deep Company clicking them together in an ambient cacophony as he considered the matters at hand. It was difficult to consider that far back for him at times with how much he drank, but that lesson in particular would always remain in the shark's mind.
  126.
  127. It had been utterly fascinating.
  128.
  129. "Master Gutterrunner taught me a variety of things. But the most important in regards to reanimation for him were three things that required an effective effort. The sort that were sorta like pillars from which one could expand the architecture of fleshcrafting to one's own creativity and desires."
  130.
  131. The Captain would nod steadily at that, gesturing ambiently as his cloak of inky, drifting shadows rose to the heights of the room like marionette strings, rising behind Maertock as he did a brief, haunting jig to demonstrate as he spoke.
  132.
  133. "The brain, which is required as a sort of motor center for the stimulation of consciousness; dominated or undominated by whatever means of poison or dark magic one manifests. The heart; the core of one's being and the storage place of the soul; the storage place of mana. And the circuitry itself; that which I had most difficulty studying until I completed my education in medicine, but is in truth more integral than any of it. It is the very pathways of action that flow through our meaty flesh sacks."
  134.
  135. Maertock would nod at that.
  136.
  137. "And with the mastery of such circuitry, the infiltration of such with one's own mana to rise it not unlike a puppet or marionette; though I assume this is novice work and practicery in comparison to a proper master's efforts. I've far larger quarry in mind than people for reanimation."
  138. (Maertock Reave)
  139. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  140.
  141. He is.. interested? Usually people showed repudiation to such art, but apparently there were those who is different.. Which was a really good thing to see, "Maybe, it will highly depends on how things go! But until then, you're a prisoner, act like one."
  142.
  143. He would signal to the boy to make silence.. Because now would the necromancer wait for the response from Maertock! Something that soon came..
  144.
  145. Arching his eyebrow, his face would show a tone of surprise! He seemed to already have a good base to work with, which was actually extremely good..
  146.
  147. "Fascinating, apparently the old man wasted no time in teaching you everything that needed.. Most of it.
  148.
  149. And.. Truly! The heart and the brain are extremely important, but two more things too! Those are..
  150.
  151. The spine and the stomach, both directly connected to the circuits, just like the other two. So much so that if you send your mana towards the brain, it will first pass through the spineand then the heart! From there, it pumps energy to the rest of the body." He would add, some of the knowledge he had acquired by stealing Trik's notes a few years ago, when he was a teen still learning this art, "Now something interesting! Not only we can manipulate dead bodies in order to bring them back, but also alive creatures! We can control them.
  152.
  153. How? Simple, the circuits are deeply connected in how our body works. So be in control of them and you will be in control of the being.
  154.
  155. Not only the body, but.. Even.." He would pause, looking directly into Murtock's eyes, as if he saw something deep inside the Siren.. A white sphere in its center, "The soul. "
  156.
  157. With all that said, the fleshcrafter master would rise from his seat, approaching one of his boxes, which he quickly opened, "Since you already have all this knowledge, let's start classes on how to actually bring beings back to life!
  158.
  159. Where to do that.. Let's use.." He would remain silent, removing from the box what appeared to be the body of a rat, "This animal here! Something rather easy to start."
  160. (Nidaz)
  161. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  162.
  163. Well. That's rather droll. The boy gave a rather disappointed glance, and little more. He'd opt to simply observe the ensuing class they intended to give to the Sirenian for now.
  164. (Valamir)
  165. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  166.
  167. Maertock would sit up in his chair as he began to take notes upon his instructor's beginning tutelage, the shadow shark nothing if not one to appreciate a bit of good scholastic dark magic when it came down to it! Knowledge was power; of that there could be no doubt in the seas high and low.
  168.
  169. "Yes, he implied he didn't want to teach me all of his trade secrets without a bit of experimentation on my part; the old rat was a tough instructor. A good one though; everything he said I remembered. Still, if there's missing pieces of the puzzle I can make us of...well, I don't mind that one bit."
  170.
  171. The captain would steadily begin to scurry down a series of notes with wet, shadowy ink made manifest from his own flowing coat; the cursed ichor an excellent and lasting form of script all things considered. His shadowy tendrils were as fine as a quill as a predatory instrument in truth.
  172.
  173. "So the spine is a sort of.....current like the ocean in a way? It's a straight pathway of mana up through the circuitry into the brain stem. That makes sense, yeah. If you're working with flesh, you need a stick for your puppet. Does that mean that in theory; assuming you were a surgeon who knew what you were doing, you could replace a corpse's spine with an arcanium substitute that offers finer control and mana flow through the cadaver? Like a control rod of sorts...."
  174.
  175. The captain would softly tap his chin at that, clicking his serrated rows of teeth together as minty smoke rose from his dry, reddened gills.
  176.
  177. "And the stomach naturally would be attached to the lining of the spine; good secondary storage of mana and regulator of the current necessary for marionettery and reanimation. Yes, yes, it's all coming together in my mind's eye."
  178.
  179. At the mention of the soul, however, the siren's jaw would drop a bit. He'd catch it, but it was clear. Being sovereign over souls; a master of death? That interested the black hearted reaver, the prophet of the deep....well, deeply.
  180.
  181. "So one can go beyond controlling and animating the dead, but force the living to obey the sovereignty of my shadows and the mana they manifest? You have my full attention Professor...but yes."
  182.
  183. He'd wave his clawed hand.
  184.
  185. "Let's begin with a practical study of the reanimation process. Tally ho."
  186. (Maertock Reave)
  187. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  188.
  189. Nidaz.. wasn't someone who wasted time when it was time to explain something. Sometimes even being too fast and giving too little detail about what was being discussed, but since Maertock was being able to keep up, that was a good thing.
  190.
  191. He is a good student.
  192.
  193. He had understood the importance of the stomach and spine, which would facilitate and save some time with explanations.. He even became interested in the subject of souls, another positive point.
  194.
  195. Approaching the student's desk, the necromancer would place the rat's body just in front of him, in a delicate and careful way, so as not to damage the specimen, "This will be your first guinea pig, let's see how it goes! But be careful so to not damage it.."
  196.
  197. Moving away, he went straight to the blackboard, where using a piece of chalk he had on the table next to him, he would start to write things and other stuff, specifically he was drawing the body ofa rat, full of lines around the body! But specific points were highlighted, such as the brain, heart and others.
  198.
  199. Finishing his drawing, he would turn to sit, "For this first lesson, I want you to make your mana flow into the magic circuits of this creature!
  200.
  201. It's very simple, but it will be a test for you to get started. Before we try with human bodies.." Obviously he wouldn't stop there, he still had more things to say, "Do it lightly, in small amounts.. But steadily ones! Like a smooth flowing river." Nidaz using metaphors? Now something new to see.
  202.
  203. And now everything was ready, all that was needed was to start the procedure.
  204.
  205. While Maertock dealt with that, the fleshcrafter would comment on things from time to time, "The only problem with the manipulation of souls, is that.. I had to make a deal, with a certain entity, in exchange for such power.
  206.
  207. But I’m not going to go into too much detail about it. Focus on what’s important!"
  208. (Nidaz)
  209. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  210.
  211. While he wouldn't make much of a peep amidst whatever Nidaz was talking about, he'd take mental note at first, of what they said.
  212.
  213. Then it was deemed better to have physical notes, so he'd take out a piece of paper that was already written on, and then flip it over, jotting down what was said on the back.
  214. (Valamir)
  215. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  216.
  217. Maertock might not have looked it on the exterior, but he was a determined and effective scholar in his own right. Dark magic wasn't as simple as cutting his wrists and hoping for the best; it required a lot of reading and a lot of actually applying concepts in a scholastic manner moving forward to understand further concepts.
  218.
  219. It helped that he wasn't drinking during the lesson. It was easier for his shadowy tendrils to take notes in that regard. They weren't entirely immune to his excesses; entertaining as he found it to imply otherwise, the shadows were still for the most part entirely his manipulations.
  220.
  221. Though there was an unnatural spark of life in its demeanor, of that there was no doubt. All the better for such an exercise. The shark doctor's eyes would scan over the rat carcass first as a medical professional, then as a master chef who'd cooked rats, then at last as a swordsman, considering the vitals of the animal before him from a memory before raising his palm above it.
  222.
  223. "Flow mana into the creature, and try to control it? Well, your orders doc."
  224.
  225. Maertock had impaled countless people with his shadows in a violent manner. Then several more in a slight less violent manner as a doctor. But this would be more like his cooking; careful application was key to ensure the success of a good dish.
  226.
  227. His shadowy tendrils of mana would slowly slide into the rat through it's mouth, darkness blowing forth down the esophagus of the rat corpse before progressively filling its stomach. From there, the inky blackness would grow microscopic razors, flowing forth through the mana circuitry of the rat's spine as the darkness dissipated into deep, occultic mana. Maertock's own.
  228.
  229. "I am no man unfamiliar with accursed deals with primordial entities my good Professor. If it's something you can achieve with an all powerful being? Well, I might have mywork cut out for me all things considered. I ain't afraid of selling my black heart and soul."
  230.
  231. The mana would proceed up the spine into the brain, spreading out like shadowy tendrils within the rat corpse as each and every flowing inch of the rodent corpse's being was infiltrated, black mana replacing the lost life of the corpse rat with a foul, macabre rendition.
  232.
  233. The tiny heart would beat. Just barely, but audible.
  234. (Maertock Reave)
  235. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  236.
  237. Scratching his head, he recalled a question that the captain had asked, "Ah yes, it is possible to change the spine. But given the delicacy of such a part, it is extremely complicated.
  238.
  239. It would need extreme precision, to work with this!" And there was the answer, Nidaz was not only a fleschrafter, but also a doctor! One of the best in Achyon!
  240.
  241. At least in his head..
  242.
  243. In addition to this, seeing that the prisoner took notes of what was being said.. The necromancer would smile. For him, knowledge was everything, where seeing someone looking for it made him happy.. Therefore, a look of approval was given.
  244.
  245. And soon the process would begin, the Siren's mana would flow into the little mouse's body. A long process, given the way it was done, but that was still important.. Really important.
  246.
  247. But what caught his attention, was what Maertock would say next, while effecting the rat's resurrection, "Then perhaps you should meet the being that I did a deal with, to thus acquire powers..
  248.
  249. I will say.. He has a direct connection with all.. This art. That we work with.
  250.
  251. In this deal, I gave my soul, in exchange for being able to manipulate the soul of living beings, mainly of humans.. But there still much for me to study.
  252.
  253. This is why, this prisoner is here." Saying that, the man would lower his head in silence, pointing towards Val.
  254.
  255. Given the circumstances of the moment, he had ended up being forced to choose that option.. To give up his soul. Perhaps it was not the wisest, considering the fact that Bruno and Anna survived, even through they denied the deal.. But he had acquired something, something that is helping him in his search..
  256.
  257. And that is what really matters to him. Aside from the fact that it served other things.. Including getting close to certain people.. People that he liked.
  258.
  259. A beat.. A little beat was heard from the rat's body.. It's heart. And a smile, across Nidaz's face, was emitted..
  260.
  261. It started. Maertock was succeeding on his test.. Let's see how it ends.
  262. (Nidaz)
  263. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  264.
  265. A brief scoff came from Val, and he shook his head firmly. This better not result in irreversible damage to himself. Otherwise there would be Hel to pay. Right? Then again, chances are, attempted manipulation of his soul might have worse effects than Occult had.
  266.
  267. Nonetheless, he'd continue to jot down notes for his own use of this lesson he was giving to the Reave. Even if he barely followed it at the moment? It could be of use later down the line. Assuming these experiments wouldn't be lethal or anything of the likes.
  268.
  269. The boy mumbled something under his breath, before simply folding the notes for now, and pocketing them. He wasn't likely to get much more on this subject until the necromancer actually used him for practice.
  270. (Valamir)
  271. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  272.
  273. Maertock would click his serrated teeth together excitement as his shadow slowly, steaaaaadily trailed into the depths of the vermin's body, the black mana flowing through the depths of his being with a coursing, black surf that almost accelerated the further and further he drifted his mana into the corpse.
  274.
  275. Now, the sharkman was a master shadow magi, a deep occultist, but above all a profuse alcoholic and drug addict. When he felt even an inkling of excitement chemicals in his brain, he went full throttle and didn't hold back.
  276.
  277. Almost immediately as if on instinct, he'd rev up the sheer, pulsating onslaught of shadow mana into the rat, the corpse's form started to grow in size as the eyes pops into jelly before, all of the sudden in a sticky popping sound, the rat exploded into countless fleshy chunks that spread about the room.
  278.
  279. "...Whoops."
  280.
  281. The captain would blink steadily, realizing that just as quickly as he'd gotten it, he'd lost it.
  282.
  283. Shadows would spread out upon the floor like a sudden, inky sea of darkness as a giant, black shark in the shape of a great white with burning crimson eyes rose from its depths, beginning to feed upon the corpse as Maertock lit a cigarette with a chuckle.
  284.
  285. "So, too much is a bad thing huh? And who's this fella you're being hush hush about? If he makes you a stronger manifester of the black arts, I don't see why my dead god would mind a living one helpin' in his vengeful resurrection. Be mighty surly of him."
  286. (Maertock Reave)
  287. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  288.
  289. It was always fascinating to watch someone in the process of learning Necromancy. Nidaz had seen Chiara learn, had seen several other apprentices as well.. And now he saw Maertock conduct his test on the rat.
  290.
  291. He would stretch out a little on the table, leaning over it towards the Siren, to observe the procedure.. Closely.
  292.
  293. Until the vermin.. Exploded.
  294.
  295. Pieces of the little creature flying everywhere, to the walls, floor, boxes and even.. On Nidaz's face. Which was static in silence, blinking several times..
  296.
  297. A feeling of nostalgia would overtake his body! It seemed as if it was yesterday that he had blown up his first rat.. It was beautiful! In fact, fabulous.
  298.
  299. Opening his mouth, he would take a deep breath and then, "HAHAHA PERFECT!" He would exclaim laughing, looking in the direction of Maertock.
  300.
  301. In a quick movement he would jump over the table, going towards the pirate, still dirty with pieces of the dead mouse all around his body and face, "Experiment concluded in a fabulous way and yes, a lot can end up blowing up the creature, but too little? It can cause nothing.
  302.
  303. It is necessary to have medium and constant amounts flowing, always maintaining your concentration." He would reply, nodding to himself a few times before going to talk about the other subject, "Well, at first I regretted it.. But now? I'm happy!
  304.
  305. Because I am being able to conduct experiments involving the soul. Something that Trik only dreamed of.
  306.
  307. Where soon, I will indeed bring a being back to life! Uh.. Kind of.. Heh."
  308. (Nidaz)
  309. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  310.
  311. Oh dear. A rodent-turned-explosive would've been hilarious on any other occasion. However. In this case? He was right near the epicenter of the would-be blast radius.
  312.
  313. A number of small chunks flew into his hair, and small amount of blood onto the side of his face, which he brought a hand up to wipe away. Seems it was for the best that he put his notes away when he did. It wouldn't do to have them be soaked in gore!
  314.
  315. "Well. That was... Interesting. Is that supposed to happen?"
  316. (Valamir)
  317. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  318.
  319. Maertock would blink steadily after a time before dredging his clawed hand into the depths of his inky shadows, withdrawing a bottle of Valmasian Brandy as black tendrils rose from behind him to set aside a glass before beginning to pour the drink. He was a man of class in a dining and academic setting even as a pirate; this was the way of the high seas the way he saw it.
  320.
  321. "It was a perfect theater....but I believe it is no longer what we would call....renanimatable…..and yet I learned much from this failure, didn't I? Too much mana can damage the carcass; it will require a trained delicacy from a shark to ensure I do not rend bodies to pieces during my own practical studies..."
  322.
  323. The captain was already making notes in his mind and journal with the aid of shadow tentacles, clicking his rows of serrated teeth together with nigh holiday cheer as the knowledge was secured in his brain.
  324.
  325. "I believe in my case, reinforcing the corpse will be a mutually beneficial agreement between myself and a thrall. Harder to explode when muscle and deep flesh is melded to metal you see."
  326.
  327. The captain did have an infinitely regenerating tentacle after all. That was entirely a thing he did have; glorious dead and eldritch god that he was born under.
  328.
  329. "A good bookmark for a lesson at least, I know what I need to do, and what I must not do to successfully animate a corpse. The missing information and muscle memory from my shadows is there...."
  330.
  331. The captain would bob his head.
  332.
  333. "But that mysterious figure you mentioned sounds like a fine deal for a blackhearted rogue like myself; if nary be I ever need another dark god's aid to augment my own black craft."
  334. (Maertock Reave)
  335. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  336.
  337. Taking a handkerchief from his pocket, he would use it to clean his face! While listening to the words coming from Maertock.. Where after cleaning himself, it was time to talk.
  338.
  339. "Failure is nothing more than a form of learning.. A second chance for success, with more knowledge than before!
  340.
  341. So yeah, I know that in your next attempt will be extremely successful, my good Maertock! I'm sure of it!" Saying that, he would raise his hand and then give his student a thumbs up.
  342.
  343. Failure was part of science. It was beautiful and normal to happen, so it was not something to be ashamed of if happened! But to be proud of, because at least the attempt was given.
  344.
  345. "Now that being.. Very well, I'll tell you his name.. Which we just met after several misfortunes! Regardless, he is called..
  346.
  347. ...
  348.
  349. Achlys, The Forgotten Son!" To emphasize what he said, he would raise his index finger as high as he could in theair, with suspense tone in his voice, "But well.. We know who his father is, since he told to us! This being Azrael." In the end he would shrug, as if what he had said was no big deal.
  350.
  351. It might not be for him, but what about the rest?
  352. (Nidaz)
  353. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  354.
  355. Maertock would nod his head steadily as he clicked his serrated rows of teeth together, the Captain of the Deep Company genuinely contemplative of the matter at hand as he hemmed and hawed to himself in consideration. It was a lot to all take in, but then, he was no common man.
  356.
  357. He was a shark.
  358.
  359. "Indeed, it will be good to commit some trial and error before my own experimentations. It is easy to replace a rat corpse, far more tedious to replace rarer and more powerful cadavers like the sort I have in mind. Grand plans my good professor, grand and intoxicating plans."
  360.
  361. The captain would nod firmly at that, his notes still being scribbled away as he considered the matters at hand with cheer. It was going to be an interesting venture, of that at least there could be no doubt.
  362.
  363. "Achlys, the forgotten son.....very interesting. The son of the death god and the dead god both becoming relevant to me as a pirate. Fascinating indeed. I know of the reaper, Nidaz. If what you're tellin' me is true, might be he's the right sort to be sellin' my soul to. The thought of two death gods playin' tug of war with my eternal soul is pretty damned funny, can't deny. No fear."
  364.
  365. The captain would nod firmly.
  366.
  367. "I'd like to meet this Achlys one of these days. Strike a pact with him when I get a firm grasp of necrofishmancy."
  368. (Maertock Reave)
  369. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  370.
  371. "Plans are good, but try to create only a few to start with.. I did a mistakea and now I have so many, that I don't even know where to start.. Heh." He would comment, desperation starting hit him..
  372.
  373. It was just pain.
  374.
  375. He had so many things to do, create another abomination, his expedition, Achyon's protections, meetings with the council, preparing everything for when Lyndis returned and a lot of more things he had to deal with.. Life ain't easy.
  376.
  377. Staggering back, he would lean against the table, listening to what Maertock would say. One god fighting the other for a soul.. That would be interesting to see, "I have to agree."
  378.
  379. And the next question that came, was in relation to meeting with the Primordial, "Uh.. Maybe it is possible, but I already warn you that it will not be easy.
  380.
  381. When we tried to meet him, we had to face several beings and almost fall to our death in a lava pit.. He tends to hide, very, very deep in some places.
  382.
  383. But if you had succees on fiding him without dying? Congratulations, you will have the agreement with a being of immense power."
  384.
  385. Stretching out a little bit, he would snap his fingers, undeads coming into the room to start organizing things, "Very well, that should finish our class for today! I know it was a little short, but it was because I hadn't prepared much..
  386.
  387. The next one we will be working with a human body, so be prepared.. Because I will make sure it is a really good one.." Nodding at Maertock, he would pause, "Is there anything else you want to know before we stop here?"
  388. (Nidaz)
  389. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  390. Maertock would nod steadily as he closed his notebook after addressing the final points that Nidaz had made alongside his own annotations and wild ideas. There was a lot to chew on and meditate upon properly; with certainty some of his own experiments to conduct to ensure he was proficiently ready to succeed where he had failed at the next lesson.
  391.
  392. Rising steadily as his form was cloaked with shadows, beginning to progressively dissipate into the darkness, the shark man would consider what WOULD be a good final question to ask. The information about Achlys had been a lot to chew on in and of itself, and that spoke little of how an alliance of dark, dead gods might yet be achieved in the foul depths.
  393.
  394. The deep one was the god of dark retribution; what was that if not a vessel for death at the end of the day.
  395.
  396. "It was a fine lecture professor. My only parting question is where we find more durable corpses. I believe my innate destructive nature will be the most difficult instinct to tame in our endeavors. Until next time, I bid you adieu. It was an informative lesson with certainty; my experimentation can begin."
  397.
  398. And like that, he was gone into the shadows.
  399. (Maertock Reave)
