  1. Lutra - Today at 8:02 PM
  2. I just used like 1 team in each era
  3. and got pretty near top
  4. Disaster Area - Today at 8:02 PM
  5. the 1 or 2 team thing is funny
  6. honestly i don't really feel that until we moved out of the rby2k10 era into the smogon / more pp era that you really saw
  7. much in the way of players who use multiple teams
  8. even though it's super commonplace in later generations
  9. i mean i don't think there's any argument that, at the least, throughout most of the life of the metagame, you could use just 1 team and be the very best
  10. Lutra - Today at 8:03 PM
  11. well it depends on the competitiveness of the players
  12. it's all relative
  13. Disaster Area - Today at 8:03 PM
  14. it's a case of mastering a single team versus being not quite as capable but still strong with a slew of teams
  15. Golden Gyarados - Today at 8:03 PM
  16. honestly i think marco is the only player i really know who plays so many teams and still wins
  17. people do settle into their team grooves/playstyles
  18. Disaster Area - Today at 8:04 PM
  19. yeah and there's no harm in that but it's interesting to see how
  20. spl shakes up some players like that
  21. Lutra - Today at 8:04 PM
  22. It comes down to an RPS game if it's competitive
  23. Disaster Area - Today at 8:04 PM
  24. because in that tournament the level of preparation is often pretty high and if you do use just 1 team then that's like the most likely place you'll be punished for it
  25. but yea it was a super interesting dichotomy for me to observe particularly when i was newer to rby
  26. because I was incredibly used to the sort of smogon / later gen mindset of understanding that
  27. teams always have strengths and weaknesses and you should use a mix of teams to prevent being too exploitable etc
  28. Lutra - Today at 8:06 PM
  29. I think that mindset is kind of wrong though, not accurate enough
  30. Disaster Area - Today at 8:06 PM
  31. in the rby meta tho, a lot of players seem to just plough straight through that
  32. it depends
  33. i mean in later generations, the weaknesses are going to be bigger / more exploitable than they are in rby
  34. simply because of the amount of options available
  35. Lutra - Today at 8:06 PM
  36. yeah I agree with that
  37. Disaster Area - Today at 8:07 PM
  38. but yeah I still have quite a lot of that mindset in the way that I play... even though I acknowledge that there's less truth in it in rby
  39. it's how I learnt to play I guess?
  40. it is amusing too to see how relics of how a player learns is reflected in their later more advanced level play
  41. but it's hard to point to many examples
  42. Lutra - Today at 8:08 PM
  43. I guess that's kind of how I learnt without win conditions
  44. then introduced them later on
  45. like I would just try conserving HP and stuff all the time
  46. not focus on what I had to keep
  47. unless it was obvious
  48. but gradually I learnt things are less obvious
  49. like keeping rocks
  50. electrics
  51. back
  52. Disaster Area - Today at 8:09 PM
  53. I mean it's interesting too bc i wasn't that good when i started rby and i didn't actually
  54. understand the idea of win conditions back then
  55. so there's some similarity for me here and
  56. it really shows in the way that i play
  57. being about accruing smaller advantages with predictions and trying to snowball them
  58. that's a very non-win condition-oriented way of playing
  59. Lutra - Today at 8:11 PM
  60. yeah kind of how Lusch plays
  61. but he's good as well
  62. but he did predictions vs peasounay
  63. like the going back and forth
  64. and booming kind of stuff
  65. I felt like Lusch has done that
  66. leru too
