  1. Interesting facts about the Former President and Nobel Peace Prize Winner Oscar Arias

  3. Oscar Arias was born in 1940, and he is a former 2-time President of Costa Rica, with one of his biggest roles being the beginning of peace in Central America. He was born into one of the well-known Costa Rican influential coffee-growing families, and even though his family had different plans for him, Oscar Arias always wanted to become the president. However, once he grew up a bit, that ambition change to a different one, as he wanted to become a doctor. But as we all know, that was soon to be changed yet again, as he started getting more and more involved with politics.

Oscar Arias has studied economics and law, before he decided to join the government of Jose Figueres Ferrer as a Political Economist and the Minister of National Planning, when he was only 32-years-old. It did not take him long before Oscar Arias climbed up the ladder at the age of 39, as he became the president of the country at 46. When he became the president for the first time, he decided to make a change as he was able to solve the Central America’s military problem, which is how he was able to win the Nobel Prize in Peace.
  5. That was still not enough for him, as even after that he still fought his way up, as he was able to become the president of Costa Ric at the age of 66. Even then, Oscar Arias continued to work on the piece in the regions that most needed it. Currently, we all know Oscar Arias mostly because of his peace initiatives that were made in the 1980s, however, that is not all he has accomplished in his life. Oscar Arias was also elected for the International Criminal Court's Trust Fund for Victims from the Board of Directions, together with the election of a trusted worker of Economists for Peace and Security.
  6. In 1973, Oscar Arias decided that it was time to settle down, which is when he married Margarita Peñón Góngora. She was a trained biochemist at a Vassar College, New York, who has always admired his work. Even today, she works closely with her husband as both of them try to turn Costa Rica into an amazing and prosperous country. They ended up having only two children, a daughter named Silvia Eugenia Arias Penón and a son named Óscar Felipe Arias Penón.
  7. We can easily say that Oscar Arias is probably one of the most loved politicians ever, however that is not all he does. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his wife and his children. Another thing Oscar Arias likes to do is write books; in fact, he has actually written and published a number of books. For example, “Horizons of Peace: …” was one pf the books that also became very popular internationally, as he explained how he was able to contribute to the peace process in Central America.
