- “Sir.” The mercenary steeled himself, then stepped gingerly into the elevator, panning around with the muzzle of his SMG, aiming up in case an assailant hung from the roof. “Empty,” he added.
- Alik approached the body on the floor and prodded it with the tip of his boot, before dropping into a crouch. Shouldering his weapon, he checked over the corpse.
- “No booby-traps,” he confirmed, then turned the dead man’s head so they could see his ruined face. “It is Georgy. His equipment has been stripped.”
- “What is the point of this?” said Vova. “Is Fisher trying to intimidate us?”
- A melodic electronic chirp sounded inside the elevator, and Alik stiffened, turning toward the source of the noise. “Something up there, in the corner. Stuck to the frame.” He pointed with his gun. “Like a ball. Is it a camera…?”
- “Get out!” Aslanov shouted the command a half-second too late, his words smothered by the metallic crash of a detonation emanating from the top of the elevator.
- A shaped charge severed the support cables, and suddenly there was nothing to hold the elevator in place. With the dead man and the mercenary still inside, the steel cage plunged the last ten meters down into the service area below, striking with such impact that the elevator was crushed under its own weight.
- On the level above them, perched on the far side of the open shaft with a gun at the ready in his hand, Fisher tossed away a spent radio detonator and started shooting.
