  1. Ian sat down on the bleachers, popcorn in his lap.
  2. "Where did you get that?" Renee pointed.
  3. "Not important. Want some?" Ian tilted the bag towards her.
  4. "Sure." She took a piece.
  5. "So you came to watch our boy grow up too?" The sound of leather dinging against aluminum rang up.
  6. "I don't know what you're talking about. I always watch the last five minutes of Eddie's baseball practice, and I certainly wasn't instrumental in setting up some kind of meeting." She took a piece of popcorn, "It's not as if I'm a meddling busybody."
  7. Ian shrugged, "I came to watch my plotting come to fruition." He pulled some opera glasses to his eyes.
  8. "Oh come on, where did you get those?"
  9. "Not important." They sat silently watching as baseball practice wrapped up and Eddie bid goodbye to his team-mates with a series of high-fives and manly hand-clasps. As team captain, he stayed behind to clear away equipment, then began to set off across the field.
  10. Ian and Renee scuttled over to the edge of the bleachers and looked over them to get a better view, and sure enough Amy was just about to cross Eddie's path.
  11. "Just as planned..." Ian observed from behind his opera glasses, a smile creeping up to his ears. Renee shushed him. She could just about here the voices below in the near-silence of the field.
  12.
  13. "Hey, Amy." Eddie put too much of a pause between the words, and in the back of his mind he was vaguely aware of this, but he smiled anyway.
  14. "Hey Eddie."
  15. "Hey." He repeated. He rubbed the back of his head, pushing up his baseball cap. He could have sworn he knew what he was going to say when he started.
  16. "How was practice?" Amy smiled sweetly.
  17. "It went good. Jack's really coming along in his fielding." He gulped as he groped for a bit of confidence, and a flash of reflected light caught his eye from the direction of the bleachers. He focused on it, and saw the object that reflected the sun had been a pair of... opera glasses? Being held by Ian. Noticing his attention, Ian threw a thumbs-up to him. He coughed to clear his throat and refocused on Amy, "Would you like to go to the dance, maybe, if you're not going with anyone else? With me, I mean. Go to the dance with me. Please?" He coughed again. The important thing was that he'd said the words he was meant to, many of them in the right order, and sometimes in surplus, which couldn't be a bad thing.
  18. "I'd love to." She beamed.
  19. "Oh." He realised he was genuinely surprised. His pitch really had not been great. "Awesome." Since that had worked, he decided to follow instinct, "Would you like me to walk you home?"
  20. "That'd be great." He stuck out his elbow, and she took it giggling.
  21.
  22. "We have lift-off." Ian raised his hand.
  23. "Mission accomplished." Renee high-fived him without looking away from the couple walking away.
