- In the Greenverse, the future is not fixed; it consists of various alternate possibilities and timelines determined by the choices everyone makes:
- “We need you to break into the Secret Headquarters of a new organisation, Cassandra Inc. It claims to be able to see the future. And has been selling information on what’s going to happen, to all kinds of interested parties.”
- “Okay, hold it right there,” said Molly. “That’s not actually possible. There is no one fixed future, as such. Just a whole bunch of possible outcomes and differing timelines. Which one you end up in is the result of all the different choices made by all the people in the world. Even the most powerful computers would have a hard time crunching numbers that big.” -Dr. DOA
- (Theoretical science buffs will obviously recognize this as the setting running on Hugo Everett III's many-worlds theory)
- The Droods' esper division is capable of flooding the aether with so much psychic information that it blinds other psychics and precogs:
- “How can we be sure Cassandra won’t know we’re coming?” I said.
- “Our esper section is getting ready to flood the aether with psychic chaff, just in case,” said the Matriarch. “Overload the scene with so much information that Cassandra will be temporarily blinded. And no, I don’t fully understand that either, so there’s no point in asking. Basically, they’ll be generating a psychic blind spot for you to move in. But apparently that takes a lot out of them, so they won’t be able to maintain it for long. Once you leave the Hall, you’ll be working against the clock. Take too long, and your protection could just vanish.” -Dr. DOA
- The Droods have private planes for travel, one of which is the Drood Blackhawke:
- We’d only just rounded the corner of the Hall when the lawn before us split open and pulled apart, the two grassy sides rising up and up to reveal a vast hidden bunker deep underground. The straining of hidden mechanisms sounded loudly on the still winter air until the two huge green sides were practically vertical. And rising steadily into the air between them, on a gleaming hydraulic lift, was a sleek black futuristic jet. The Drood Blackhawke. Guaranteed to get you there in one hell of a hurry and not lose your luggage along the way. -Dr. DOA
- This is how fast the Drood Blackhawke can move:
- “This is Elliot, your pilot for this flight. Welcome aboard, Eddie and Molly. Make yourselves comfortable. It’s going to take us at least two hours to get to the other side of the world. No cabin crew, no complimentary drinks, no point complaining. We’re in a hurry. Not expecting any real turbulence, but if things should get a little shaky, try to get some of it into the bags provided. I’ll let you know when we’ve arrived, so don’t bother me.” -Dr. DOA
- Some doofus called the Manichean Monk arrives. This is some of what he can do:
- “Something’s wrong here, Eddie,” Molly said quietly. “This doesn’t feel like the man I knew. There’s something . . . off about him.”
- “Well!” I said loudly to the Monk. “We can’t stand around here chatting all day, or Cassandra’s security is bound to notice us. Hello? Monk? Why is he just staring at me, Molly? Why isn’t he saying anything? Can’t you just teleport him out of here? Answer that last question first.”
- “He’s shielded!” said Molly. “And . . .”
- “Why did I just know you were going to say that? And what?”
- “Bad news, part two,” said Molly. “The Monk has a special gift, from God.”
- “Really?”
- “Apparently. He can shut down people’s powers and abilities. Doesn’t last long, just enough to give him an advantage. He’s already shut down my magics. Try your torc.”
- I called for my armour, and it didn’t come. A chill ran through me. I’m not used to feeling unprotected. -Dr. DOA
- Molly puts half a dozen people to sleep with a word:
- I kicked the door open and barged in, Molly right behind me. Half a dozen technical staff looked up, startled. I was about to armour up, when Molly barked out the single word “Sleep!” and they all fell fast asleep at their posts. A few of them even snored gently. Molly looked at me suddenly.
- “Oh I’m sorry, Eddie! Did you still need to hit someone? I could always wake them up again.” -Dr. DOA
- Molly has a spell that forces hidden things to reveal themselves:
- “There’s something here, but it’s really well hidden. I’ll try a spell to force hidden things to reveal themselves.”
- “Have you got enough magic for something like that?” I said carefully.
- “Just about. I’ve been running on fumes ever since the Monk shut me down, but it’s coming back.”
- She did the business, with a minimum of chanting and arm waving, and just like that, the security measure was hovering right there in front of us. -Dr. DOA
- Angels know everyone:
- “Hello, Eddie Drood,” said the angel. “Hello, Molly Metcalf. I’ve been expecting you.”
- “Oh shit,” said Molly. “It knows us.”
- “I am Heaven’s warrior,” the angel said quite calmly. “I am the will of God made flesh, to enforce his wishes in the mortal world. I know everyone. -Dr. DOA
- Angels exist outside of time and space, and can therefore see the past, present and future at once:
- “What does Cassandra want with you?” said Molly.
- “I make its business possible. All angels exist Outside of Time and Space, so we can see more clearly, to be about our business. Past, Present, and Future, all at once. I was part of the angel war, fought in the Nightside over the Unholy Grail.”
- The act of an angel possessing a psychic is enough to drive them mad:
- “Just as well,” said the angel. “Considering why you were there. What matters is, I was attacked and weakened, and fell to Earth. Hauled down from my high station, I was captured and imprisoned within a powerful human psychic. The only cage that could hold me. But just the effort of such a possession drove the man insane, and I refused to do anything my captors wanted. They had no way of compelling me. They dared not injure the host for fear of weakening his hold on me. And for fear of what I would do once I was free again." -Dr. DOA
- What we see of angels is merely an "impression" of the real thing, scaled down so that their very nature won't damage the humans around them:
- “Thank you, Eddie Drood, Molly Metcalf. I’ll put in a good word for you.”
- The angel burst out of the man in a blast of unbearable light. What we’d seen before had just been an impression of an angel; what it allowed us to see. Scaled down, so it wouldn’t damage us. -Dr. DOA
- An angel moves in a direction unrecognizable to humans, the forces generated by its departure causing major damage to an airship in the process:
- Wild and glorious, magnificent and free at last, the angel departed, in a direction I could sense but not name. The whole room rocked as the forces unleashed in its passing shook the flying airship from end to end. Molly and I clung to each other as the floor dropped out from under us. There was the sound of a whole string of explosions and all kinds of systems breaking down, along with any number of alarms and sirens, and a great many people panicking. One end of the room dropped dramatically as the airship began to fall out of the sky. Molly and I staggered back and forth, and had to hang on to what was left of the silver cage to steady ourselves.
- “I asked the angel not to hurt anyone,” I said. “I should have specified—that included not dropping the bloody ship out of the sky with us still on board!”
- “I told you it would come out in a bad mood,” said Molly. -Dr. DOA
- The shock of containing an angel is enough to kill a normal person:
- At the back of the cage, the human host was lying curled up in a corner, not moving. He’d clearly been dead for some time, probably killed by the original shock of containing the angel. Only its presence had kept his body going. Decay was setting in now and making up for lost time. -Dr. DOA
- A statement for both Ethel herself and Dr. DOA's poison:
- “I’m sorry,” said Ethel. “I really am, but that was different. There’s nothing I can do this time. The poison’s progress is so advanced that no cure is possible. I can’t save you, Eddie. I would have to rewrite your whole existence, and the physical laws of your reality are really very restrictive. Just trying to use that much power would force me out of your dimension. And your family still needs me, Eddie.” -Dr. DOA
- And another:
- “Can’t you See who did this to me?” I said.
- “No,” said Ethel. “And I should be able to . . . Isn’t that odd? I’m going to have to think about this.” -Dr. DOA
- The new Armourers give Molly a wristwatch that generates a time-accelerating field:
- He handed Molly a very ordinary-looking wristwatch.
- “What am I supposed to do with this?” said Molly. “Tell an enemy that it’s later than they think?”
- “You hit the raised button on the side. Don’t touch it now! ” said Victoria.
- “After that, everything inside the field generated by the watch will accelerate in time,” said Maxwell.
- “Thousands of years will pass in seconds,” said Victoria. “We designed it to break down walls and other barriers, or destroy documents and other incriminating evidence. But you can imagine what it would do to a person. Or any powerful creature.”
- “As long as you don’t choose something naturally long-lived,” said Maxwell.
- Molly strapped the watch on her wrist with a casualness even I found disturbing. -Dr. DOA
- Molly changes her appearance, and said change is so complete that Eddie's Sight isn't enough to see through it:
- Molly dropped me a wink, snapped her fingers, and just like that, she was somebody else. Molly Metcalf blinked out of existence, to be replaced by a tall, muscular figure with frizzy brick red hair and a harsh, handsome face. She wore a heavy black leather jacket over a simple blue jumpsuit, with thigh-high calf-leather boots, and a length of steel chain wrapped around her waist. She looked like she could punch out a rabid Rottweiler and look good doing it.
- “Okay, that is incredible,” I said. “I’m looking at you through my Sight, backed by all the power of my torc, and I still can’t see a trace of Molly Metcalf anywhere.”
- Roxie Hazzard grinned back at me, and when she spoke, even her voice had changed to a low, sultry growl with a hint of an accent I couldn’t place.
- “That’s the idea, lover. The change has to be complete, to go undetected in places like the Wulfshead and the Nightside.”
- “Is it just an illusion?” I said. “Or have you undergone an actual physical transformation?”
- “Allow a girl a few trade secrets,” said Roxie. She struck a pose, showing herself off. “So, do you fancy me like this?”
- “I’m going to be in trouble whatever I say, aren’t I?” -Dr. DOA
- Some more of "Roxie" (read: Molly) completely embarrassing people with magic:
- Roxie was keeping herself occupied, and enjoying herself immensely. She might look every inch the mercenary adventurer, but she still had command of all her witchy unpleasantness. Nothing the guards fired at her was even getting close, and she was having a great time turning weapons into snakes, scorpions, and lobsters that went straight for the genitals. Apparently, her sense of humour remained the same no matter who she was being. She gestured languidly, and a whole bunch of guards’ armour disappeared, replaced by flowery frocks, basques and stockings, and some quite distressing bondage outfits. At which point, most of the guards threw their weapons on the floor, stuck their hands in the air, and did their best to look like they were really very sorry. Some were clearly only moments away from bursting into tears. I thought Roxie was being quite restrained, for her. She hadn’t turned anyone into a toad, or a squelchy thing with its testicles floating on the surface. So far. -Dr. DOA
- This might be important to note for later:
- “How many people work here?” I said quickly. “Under the Mountain?”
- “Something like twelve thousand, I believe,” said Melmoth. “In their own various disciplines. We are a broad and eclectic church. And that’s not counting all the patients and volunteers, the security, and support staff. Let’s go meet some of them!”
- “Let’s,” I said. -Dr. DOA
- The Soul Witch is, supposedly, the most powerful witch in the world:
- “I’ve never seen them like this . . . Oh, Eddie, Molly, allow me to introduce my colleague, the Soul Witch. Head of the Magical Division, with full responsibility for situations like this. Whatever this is. The most powerful witch in the world.”
- Molly bridled immediately. “Oh yes? Then why have I never heard of her?”
- “Because unlike some of us,” said the Soul Witch, “I don’t feel the need to advertise.” -Dr. DOA
- Molly's magic can cause beings to wither, burst into fire, explode "like sacks of blood", or just fall over dead. Conversely, these beings in particular have a magical nature that forces her to have to destroy them one at a time:
- Molly circled around me, blasting individual hybrids with quick bursts of magic. Some withered, some caught fire, and some blew apart like sacks of blood. Most just fell away dead. Because of their strong magical nature, Molly could only take them out one at a time, and there were always more, scrambling through the opening from the moor. -Dr. DOA
- The Soul Witch, on the other hand, is powerful enough to affect all of them at once with a single word:
- More and more came streaming through the opening where the viewscreen used to be, throwing themselves at me in a blind fury. They didn’t seem to care how many had already died at my hands. I was almost buried under a great clawing blanket of the things, reduced to striking out blindly with my golden fists. And then the Soul Witch said a single Word, and they all dropped off me in a moment. They cried out silently, pressing their hands to their elongated heads, and then turned as one and fled back through the opening. Back onto the moor, and the world that had been made for them. I shook the last few off me, and they fell lifelessly to the floor. The Soul Witch gestured briefly, and the one-way viewscreen returned. On the other side, the elven hybrids were scattering across the misty moor, disappearing into the shadows and going to ground. I armoured down and nodded my thanks to Molly. She looked even more tired than I felt, but she still found the energy to glare at the Soul Witch.
- “What took you so long?”
- “It’s all in the timing,” said the Soul Witch. -Dr. DOA
- This is what the Soul Witch did:
- “What did you do to them?” I said to the Soul Witch.
- “I accentuated the elven material in their bodies,” she said calmly. “So they couldn’t bear to be in a human place.” She smiled at Molly. “I’m surprised you didn’t think of it.”
- “I was busy!” snapped Molly. -Dr. DOA
- The Soul Witch has several souls contained inside of herself, stacked inside one another:
- I took the opportunity to study the Soul Witch with my Sight. Ever since she’d arrived, I’d had the feeling there was more to her than met the naked eye. And sure enough, through the Sight, I could tell she didn’t just have a soul . . . She had several. Stacked inside one another, like Russian nesting dolls. The Soul Witch . . . Was she an eater of souls, a container of ghosts, or a preserver of personalities? I quietly drew Molly’s attention to the Soul Witch, and Molly nodded quickly to confirm she’d Seen it too. And then shrugged, to indicate she didn’t understand it either. -Dr. DOA
- (This also shows that Molly's Sight can be used to see a person's soul, even if their body contains multiple.)
- Molly punches a doctor out cold:
- Molly grabbed his shoulder, spun him round, and punched him out. He hit the floor hard and had to be dragged away. Everyone was a lot more polite after that. A lot of the nurses grinned at Molly, in a way that said, I’ve always wanted to do that. -Dr. DOA
- Molly's protections shield her from the Soul Witch's spirits:
- While I was still thinking that, Molly took a step forward, and she and the Soul Witch stood face-to-face; like two gunslingers meeting in the middle of Main Street. There was a sudden tension in the air, as powerful forces gathered. The two witches moved their hands slightly and adjusted their postures; professional fighters taking the measure of each other. And then the Soul Witch seemed to suddenly unfold , as all the souls stacked within her came forth, superimposing their presence upon and around her. Smoky ghosts, uncertain presences, made up of mists and tatters. The Soul Witch gestured, and the ghosts sprang forward like attack dogs, half of them heading for Molly and the others for me.
- They swirled around Molly, circling her rapidly, unable to reach her. I armoured up, and they climbed all over me, trying and failing to force their way through my armour. -Dr. DOA
- Molly does...something. I have no clue what this actually is:
- While the Soul Witch was distracted, Molly slammed her hands together. The whole office was suddenly full of a blindingly bright light. Even I was dazzled, inside my golden face mask. I could hear the Soul Witch and the Bishop crying out in shock and horror. The light hammered against my armour like a hailstorm of burning coals. When the light finally faded away and I could see again, it was all over.
- The Soul Witch was curled up in a ball on the floor, murmuring, Don’t, please don’t . . . over and over again. The table and chairs had been burned to ashes, and all four walls showed heavy scorch marks. Molly was untouched. I nodded to her respectfully.
- “Damn,” I said. “You’ve still got it, Molly. You are still professionally scary.”
- “When I have to be,” said Molly. “Believe it.” -Dr. DOA
- Molly's magic activates a nearby teleportation device of high-tech description, sending someone away.
- I turned to the Demon Demoiselle. “Do we really have to do this? It’s been a long day, I’m tired, and I’m not in the mood.”
- “I will kill you, Drood, for what you’ve done!”
- “No you won’t,” said Molly.
- She snapped her fingers, and the teleport pad activated itself. The Demon Demoiselle blinked out of existence. The two technicians hurried to reset the security measures so she couldn’t get back in.
- “Thank you, Molly,” I said. “I didn’t want to have to kill someone else.”
- “I thought as much.” -Dr. DOA
- The Merlin Glass can read minds:
- “Well, assuming that I have just successfully intimidated a Glass made by the most dangerous sorcerer who ever lived, I’m going to need the exact spatial coordinates for the Deep Down Pit’s arrival point.”
- “Don’t look at me,” said Molly. “I haven’t got a clue. All I ever needed were the right passWords, and then my teleport spell would lock on and take me there.”
- “Okay . . . ,” I said. “That should still work. Concentrate on the passWords, and the Glass will pick them out of your head and do the rest for us.”
- “You’re kidding me!” said Molly. “That thing can read minds?” She scowled at the hand mirror suspiciously, and I moved it just a little out of her reach. Molly has always had impulse-control problems.
- “Trust me,” I said. “That’s not in the top ten of the most disturbing things the Merlin Glass can do.” -Dr. DOA
- This is what Molly's protections do to lesser weapons:
- She grabbed hold of his jacket lapels with both hands, lifted him up onto his toes, and then dropped her Roxie look to show him her real face. The Surgeon made a shocked sound. He brought up his hand, and suddenly it was holding a scalpel made out of shimmering light. He moved to slash her across the throat, but the scalpel fell apart before it could even touch her, breaking up in the face of Molly’s protections. I knew she had them, but my heart still missed a beat. The Psychic Surgeon whimpered as he looked at his empty hand, and then turned reluctantly back to look at Molly.
- “You’re not just a mercenary. Who are you? What are you?”
- She pulled his face forward so she could smile right into it. “I’m Molly Metcalf. And you are in real trouble.” -Dr. DOA
