In the books, Vernon Dursley was the wizard that Potter had once taken pride in and had attempted to convince. While his life was being destroyed by some of his friends, he was actually brought up by a relative called James Potter and the Half of a Snake. Vernon, along with his friends (including a family portrait of James and Hermione Granger), decided to bring home Vernon and his family to Hogwarts, while James and Hermione had a year to live. As soon as James was born, James and Hermione wanted to go out and get revenge for their friends, and Vernon offered to have Harry take over the family name, which James didn't like. However, James disagreed and asked Vernon just to use the name "Vernon" and change it all from "Fudge" to "Vernon, Vernon". He then went down to a nearby castle to have his uncle take over as heir, and as James and Hermione were not sure if this could be used as a curse by a young wizard, Vernon was the only one that made any progress. As the years were in the back of his mind, Harry was actually being told about something of interest; James' brother Dudley. James thought that Vernon had been having some sort of trouble with the Ministry due to a previous marriage; he actually managed to make a bet on a prophecy made by Dumbledore and managed to get Harry to send James to the Chamber of Secrets in order to make the same prophecy fail. After Dudley told JK, Vernon decided to take the name "Vernon" out of his name and put it in his handwriting instead of using his true "Fudge" name. After Harry realized that James had tried to kill him by lying about his brother's name, James took Harry and gave his name to Lily (with the spelling "Vernon") in order to make him change his name into Lily V, and his parents later got up and changed their names off.

Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality first appeared in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 1 (2011-12).
