- For The Last Time
- When every tide draws back,
- And all the clocks strike dumb,
- There's a tiny bird that sings,
- Of a one, and only one...
- For that will not be reasoned-
- And, for this I hold no answers:
- But I watched the fledgling's nosedive,
- As it plummeted down between the branches.
- I'll get a message out to this one,
- Tap code and send it through the wire-
- I'll mumble to her neck,
- As she lets me climb the walls inside her:
- That I'd never seen a wonder,
- Until I'd watched her fold her laundry;
- I watched her swiff the dented floorboards,
- Then wrote home of the discovery.
- So, she can drag me into her mouth,
- Yet, there's a catch, now- and here's the rub-
- No longer can I identify this woman,
- Nor this man she seems to love...
- For fuck's sake, just split the atom!
- And hand the blind back their sight,
- Or we'll only decorate this fucking cake,
- With half-truths and flat-out lies.
- And I'll bed down in the alleys,
- I'll be happy, lying with the dogs-
- I'll step out with my pack and run,
- 'Til every shitty memory has been lost...
- Then, I'll peel off from the herd,
- As a trembling dawning looms,
- And in solitude, aim my aching howl,
- At a dripping wheaten moon.
