  1. For The Last Time
  2.
  3.
  4.
  5. When every tide draws back,
  6.
  7. And all the clocks strike dumb,
  8.
  9. There's a tiny bird that sings,
  10.
  11. Of a one, and only one...
  12.
  13. For that will not be reasoned-
  14.
  15. And, for this I hold no answers:
  16.
  17. But I watched the fledgling's nosedive,
  18.
  19. As it plummeted down between the branches.
  20.
  21.
  22.
  23. I'll get a message out to this one,
  24.
  25. Tap code and send it through the wire-
  26.
  27. I'll mumble to her neck,
  28.
  29. As she lets me climb the walls inside her:
  30.
  31. That I'd never seen a wonder,
  32.
  33. Until I'd watched her fold her laundry;
  34.
  35. I watched her swiff the dented floorboards,
  36.
  37. Then wrote home of the discovery.
  38.
  39.
  40.
  41. So, she can drag me into her mouth,
  42.
  43. Yet, there's a catch, now- and here's the rub-
  44.
  45. No longer can I identify this woman,
  46.
  47. Nor this man she seems to love...
  48.
  49. For fuck's sake, just split the atom!
  50.
  51. And hand the blind back their sight,
  52.
  53. Or we'll only decorate this fucking cake,
  54.
  55. With half-truths and flat-out lies.
  56.
  57.
  58.
  59. And I'll bed down in the alleys,
  60.
  61. I'll be happy, lying with the dogs-
  62.
  63. I'll step out with my pack and run,
  64.
  65. 'Til every shitty memory has been lost...
  66.
  67. Then, I'll peel off from the herd,
  68.
  69. As a trembling dawning looms,
  70.
  71. And in solitude, aim my aching howl,
  72.
  73. At a dripping wheaten moon.
