  6. 2 people
  7. 3 her students
  8. 4 John’s sister
  9. 5 John
  10. 6 his friend
  11. 7 Norman
  12. 8 all their children
  13. ---
  14. There are different patterns verbs and infinitives can have.
  15. ---
  16. - verb + infinitive (with nothing between them)
  17. I decided to study English.
  18. p. 96 exercise 7 - Complete the sentences with infinitive phrases that you and your partners agree with. (Many of the sentences could be completed with a noun or an adjective, but for practice, use infinitive phrases.)
  19. 1 to take care of their children. / to care for their children.
  20. 2 to read. / to speak the standard language.
  21. 3 to buy a new car. / to travel the world. / to give the best future to their kids.
  22. 4 to be serious. / seems to get worse every day.
  23. 5 to speak in the class. / to ask the teacher questions. / to work in a group.
  24. …
  25. 8 Criminals deserve to be punished. (passive)
  26. Criminals deserve to get/have a second chance. (active)
  27. ---
  28. What is something you pretended to do as a child?
  29. - I pretended to have superpowers.
  30. - I pretended to do Superman’s job.
  31. - I pretended to be a soccer player.
  32. ---
  33. A second pattern is verbs which need to have an object before the infinitive.
  34. - verb + object + infinitive
  35. These verbs usually include another person. If it’s about the same person as the subject, use a reflexive pronoun (myself/ourselves/yourself/yourselves/himself/herself/itself/themselves):
  36. I allowed myself to break my diet at the birthday party.
  37. ---
  38. p. 97 exercise 9 - With your partner, think of subjects and objects you can use to complete the sentences.
  39. 1 Every month, I remind myself to pay my bills.
  40. 2 He warned me not to forget to bring his book.
  41. 3 He convinced me to help him.
  42. 4 We hired four people to work for our company.
  43. 5 My mom required me to pay her back.
  44. The government requires us to pay taxes.
  45. ---
  46. Some of these verbs can be used without an object, but then the next verb is a gerund:
  47. permit, allow, forbid, advise, require
  48. My parents didn’t permit me to smoke in the house. (Specific prohibition of my actions)
  49. My parents didn’t permit smoking in the house. (General prohibition for anyone)
  50. ---
  51. A third pattern is verbs that take the infinitive, with or without an object:
  52. I expect to graduate in June. (I’ll graduate.)
  53. I expect you to graduate in June. (You’ll graduate.)
  54. Sometimes you need “for” before the object:
  55. I arranged to take the TOEFL. (I’ll take it.)
  56. I arranged for you to take the TOEFL. (You’ll take it.)
  57. ---
  58. Homework: finish p. 97 exercise 9
