The following is an excerpt from The History of the Friendship Rangers, The Early Years, by Cart Saddlard, 1007, Saddlard Press, Ranger Center Hardbound pp. 293, 20 bits.

Tensions grew with the coming of 1006. Nightmare Moon, princess of the night, returned to Equestria in the year 1000. With no one capable of bearing the Elements of Harmony, the Celestial forces of Equestria couldn't keep her from conquering a large swath of the country centered around the Everfree Forest. In the year 1001, Discord, spirit of chaos, escaped his prison and imposed his rule upon the lands surrounding the Badlands and Forbidden Jungle. Near the end of the year, the Changeling Hive invaded and infiltrated all three nations, becoming a pest to all of Equestria. The Changelings would soon become threatened, however, when the Crystal Empire of King Sombra returned from the ice to bathe Equestria in negative energy. Thus, a five-way war raged on for four years.

As the army of Nightmare Moon marched onto Canterlot, the city transmitted a distress signal. Immediately after the message was sent, great fragments of the sun bombarded the Earth, leaving great portions of the world uninhabitable. Although the destruction was tremendous, it was not complete. Pockets of civilization remained, some even oblivious to the mighty catastrophe.

Shortly before the fateful exchange, Princess Celestia evacuated the city to the nearby border town of Ponyville and ordered a company of her royal guards to commission a new military wing called the Friendship Rangers. The soldiers escorted a large group of civilians to Ponyville and took over the leadership of the town, and then the disaster happened.

After the dust settled and Ponyville was left miraculously unharmed, the guards set about maintaining the order and welfare of the villagers and refugees. The citizens of the new Ponyvile, after first believing that they were the only ones who survived the solar maelstrom, soon realized that communities beyond the Everfree Forest’s grip had also survived, Because they had such success in constructing a new community, they felt compelled to help other survivors rebuild and live in peace.

Toward this end, Captain of the Guard Shining Armor carried out Princess Celestia's last request, and the Friendship Rangers, in the great tradition of the Royal Guard a millenia before, were born.

Volunteers from Ponyville are eager to join in the new Friendship Rangers, and Captain Armor is willing to assemble a team of the best recruits he's got to send out into the world. Here's the available options:

TWILIGHT SPARKLE
A generalist of some renown among Equestria's intellectual circles, she escaped to Ponyville when Canterlot was evacuated. In spite of her failure to enroll in Celestia's school for gifted unicorns, she's gifted with magic and highly intelligent. She is, however, Captain Armor's little sister, so Celestia help you if you let anything happen to her.

RAINBOW DASH
A Cloudsdale native, she moved to Ponyville in search of work. She's not sonic-rainboom material or anything, but she's a very talented flier and highly athletic.

APPLEJACK
A Manehattan socialite who was only in Ponyville to visit her grandmother when the sun fell down, Applejack found a real talent in marketing the apples her family grew. Having been a salespony, Applejack is a very smooth talker.

RARITY
Rarity knew from a very early age that she loved fashion, but it wasn't until her first school dance that she earned her cutie mark in it. While Rarity herself isn't very strong, mostly unwilling to get dirty, and not a genius, her magic can be used to mend things, which can be useful.

FLUTTERSHY
Due to the nature of her talent, Cloudsdale native Fluttershy didn't earn her cutie mark til she was already grown. But when she earned it, she became highly proficient at handling wildlife. Now if only she weren't so timid.

PINKIE PIE
The nicest way of describing her is "annoying". After running away from home, Pinkie Pie found a talent in parties, and has lived a life of debauchery and pleasure ever since. From doing so many drugs and contracting so many STDs, Pinkie Pie is immune to all forms of poison and disease. She's also a very good jumper.

SPIKE
Spike the dragon was the personal assistant to a pony named Moondancer in Canterlot. With Moondancer presumed dead in the wreckage, Spike is willing to put his hide on the line to help his country. His tough hide grants him a resistance to physical attack, his firey breath is essentially an unlimited source of ammo for a projectiled attack, and a magically inclined unicorn could learn to communicate through him.

ANONYMOUS
Anon is a being from another world. Bipedal, tall, and prehensile, Anon's body lends him to a proficiency at unarmed, non-magical combat. His dextrous hands also give him an advantage with guns. Prior to the disaster, Anon was almost completely reclusive, but now that what he calls "the Happening" has come to pass, he's ready to go "innawds" and "remove kebab", which you assume means he's eager to fight. You'll have to roll for stats instead of using the preset ones I'll make for the other characters.

RUBY
Ruby is a Trottingham fashionista. She found herself in Ponyville to set up a new location for her jewelry store franchise after contacting Rarity, who was willing to manage the place. Ruby is gifted in the repair of metal objects and can manipulate gem stones magnificently. She's also sweet and innocent though, and you don't want to corrupt her by allowing wasteland warriors draw as much porn of her as possible.

RED
Red is a pirate by trade. She just doesn't have a ship. Or a crew. Or immediate access to any significant bodies of water. You could say she's between gigs right now. She's a talented swimmer, a master pickpocket, and an experienced fighter.

ARYANNE
Before the disaster, Aryanne liked to stand on street corners and loudly rant about griffons. Her obsession with a coming race war drove her to master physical fitness, and she's a very strong mare. Give her a pair of Doc Marten horseshoes and she'll crack open any skull you want her to.

SKETCHY
She kinda looks like a cancer patient to you. Are you sure she should be in a military organization? Whatever. It'll probably turn out okay.

BIG MACINTOSH
Applejack's big brother. He doesn't talk much, but he gives you the impression that he's capable of smashing anyone who looks at him wrong into a fine paste.

CREATE YOUR OWN CHARACTER
Choose race, sex, stuff. You'll have to roll for stats instead of using preset ones I'll make for the other characters.

/pone/ ended up going with Ruby, Aryanne, Red, and Sketchy to make the /pone/ squad with Ruby as squad leader.

Also, yes, this is supposed to take place in a Glimglamm'd alt-universe, so that rainboom shit never happened and Twilight never made any friends or became a princess, and all the other logical shit that comes from that also never happened.
