  1. lecomte
  2. nice, but pretty much identical to the gsg one it seems
  3. content wise
  4. gsg one goes deeper I think
  5.
  6. catche
  7. but if he's a dreamworks lighting artist, he might have some more insight in to things
  8. like how to technically do artistic things etc
  9. if that makes sense
  10. I imagine it might be artistic at times, and not just technical
  11. I remember jeremy birn's lighting tutorials on gnomon from around 2009-2012 -ish
  12. pixar lighter
  13. they were great, cause he had the knowledge and went into when and why use what for different purposes
  14. there's a lack of those types of tutorials I feel
  15.
  16. lecomte
  17. yyyeah i've never seen a proper lighting course
  18. its always about the basics
  19. also, this is more about redshift if you look at the topics
  20. also, come on, they're all from dreamworks and pixar
  21. look at digital tutors
  22. everyone has worked on spiderman
  23. or marvel movies
  24. theres definitely a lack of technical lighting tutorials, but I dont think this is one of them
  25. the only one that has a bit higher level is grant's course, but we all know how that ended
  26.
  27. catche
  28. true, many people have been involved in those shows(edited)
  29. i never finished grant's
  30.
  31. lecomte
  32. neither did he
  33.
  34. catche
  35. hehe
  36. did like what I saw though
  37.
  38. lecomte
  39. grant had some good work, he worked at a good commercial studio as well
  40. catche
  41. some one uploaded it to youtube, probably illegally, and i shamefully watched it
  42.
  43. lecomte
  44. but it was only for print based projects, he didnt do animation
  45. but he got lost on the business side of things
  46.
  47. catche
  48. fight with his brother i read
  49.
  50. lecomte
  51. got his boxing passion confused with 3d
  52. yeah that too
  53. lawsuit etc
  54.
  55. catche
  56. messy
  57. i can see how that takes the motivation out of you
  58.
  59. lecomte
  60. its a million dollar business
  61.
  62. catche
  63. crazy
  64.
  65. lecomte
  66. yeah definitely
  67. all about timing
  68. he filled the vray gap
  69. and everyone jumped on it
  70.
  71. catche
  72. he was really good though
  73.
  74. lecomte
  75. yeah until he wasnt
  76. his vray course is irrelevant now
  77.
  78. catche
  79. learned a lot
  80. yeah well, mostly
  81.
  82. lecomte
  83. alot of it is about the sampling and that has changed
  84.
  85. catche
  86. he did update the sampling one
  87.
  88. lecomte
  89. the rest is just basic knowledge
  90. yeah well still
  91. its pretty much a slider now
  92.
  93. catche
  94. two
  95.
  96. lecomte
  97.
  98. catche
  99. max subdivs + noise threshold
  100.
  101. lecomte
  102. I remember at the studio I worked at, all the ADs said 'this is the way to go' cause grant said it
  103. as if he was some kind of guru
  104.
  105. catche
  106. what i'm hoping rs will become soon
  107.
  108. lecomte
  109. cause nobody knew
  110. he seemed well respected
  111. so lets do exactly what he says we should do
  112.
  113. catche
  114. for sure he was/is
  115.
  116. lecomte
  117. then someone from chaos group was like oh n o
  118. thats not the right way
  119. you should just use the universal settins
  120.
  121. catche
  122. eh
  123.
  124. lecomte
  125. and everyone was like wtf
  126. he just put the max subdivs to 2048
  127.
  128. catche
  129. i followed that period
  130. 100
  131.
  132. lecomte
  133. that was so weird
  134.
  135. catche
  136. was the universal settings
  137.
  138. lecomte
  139. oh yeah that
  140. sorry been a while dont remember the specifics
  141. you remember the chaos group guy saying that?
  142.
  143. catche
  144. yep
  145.
  146. lecomte
  147. then at the end, nobody knew what to believe, I think they still dont know what the best way is
  148.
  149. catche
  150. but not that they corrected grant, and then saying "just go universal instead"
  151.
  152. lecomte
  153. and honestly
  154. neither do I
  155.
  156. catche
  157. the way I remember it, universal came before grant
  158.
  159. lecomte
  160. well they didnt correct him specifically, but it contradicted what grant said
  161.
  162. catche
  163. I think many people just went universal until grant came, kinda
  164.
  165. lecomte
  166. maybe they said it before, but there was a youtube vid from that guy afterwards
  167. who said there was alot of confusion about it
  168. and that these universal settings should work best in most cases
  169. this was before automatic sampling
  170.
  171. catche
  172. and it was with grant's explanation and understanding of the dmc sampler that made chaos group add the "shading rate" parameter, which emulates all the stuff grant was tweaking manually
  173.
  174. lecomte
  175. yeah true
  176. and then it still wasnt really clear
  177. its still vague
  178.
  179. catche
  180. what exactly?
  181.
  182. lecomte
  183. its this thing where you think you get it
  184. and youve got it figured out
  185. and then someone comes along
  186. and says something, and it renders faster
  187. with less noise
  188. and you're all screwed up again
  189. and youre like damnit, I had it
  190.
  191. catche
  192. heh yea
  193.
  194. lecomte
  195. leave me alone
  196. hahah
  197.
  198. catche
  199. they did end up with the default of 6 after a few releases
  200. which is supposed to be tried and tested over and over and over
  201.
  202. lecomte
  203. yeah
  204.
  205. catche
  206. and that's where like 99% of scenes are the most efficient
