  1. To Whom It May Concern: I am writing to you in regard to report number 3656-2481-74 because I am a bit confused. I received a letter in the mail today from Experian, and the first page said that my identity theft report didn’t meet the Fair Credit Reporting Act guidelines. However, the second page of the letter said that my security freeze had been placed and gave me a PIN and everything. I’m confused because if my police report wasn’t good enough, why did you place the freeze without my $10? Also, I’d really like to know WHY my police report isn’t good enough. The letter states that it should include as many of the elements stated as possible (most of which I did actually tell to the reporting officer; it is not my fault they were not included in the report itself), not that any of them were actually required to be in the report. It says “please send us a valid identity theft report (an official report filed with the appropriate federal, state, or local law enforcement agency, … the filing of which subjects the person who filed the report to criminal penalties if the information filed is false).” If that is the official minimum guideline, I submitted that. It also included specific dates about the theft, the name and badge number of the officer who filed the report and the filing date and report number. I also told the reporting officer how I discovered the theft, but he did not include it in the report. Nonetheless, it is an official police report with my local sheriff’s office, so I’d really like to know what guideline it doesn’t meet. I also provided a copy of my driver’s license and a copy of a bank statement as requested to verify my identity and address. I’m just really not sure what I sent that was wrong; your letter states that my report didn’t meet the guidelines but then doesn’t state specifically what guidelines were not met. As far as the freeze that’s been placed on my credit report, does that mean that the first letter is incorrect in saying that my police report was invalid? Because I didn’t pay you guys the victim-waived $10 to put the freeze on my account. Is the $8 for a temporary lift going to be waived if and when I need to do that in the future? I’m just really confused because the two portions of the letter I received today seem to be in direct conflict with each other. Thank you very much for your help clearing up this confusion for me!
