The massive cannon on the front of the gunship began to glow—a redder, harsher light than the Intensifier.
Leonore grew tense, ready to dodge.
Except…what was that below? That green light?
Starling edged to the side, peering through the windshield at the island below—where Dusk, looking tiny, stepped out of the moat. As if he’d walked on the unsea itself.
The entity—the vast snake of lore and mythology—erupted from beneath the island and crashed into the gunship, throwing it off as it fired. With enormous jaws, the entity crushed the front of the ship—holding Dajer and the bridge—releasing an explosion of gas and fire.
In a blink, Dajer disappeared from the viewscreen as it snapped off, black. The rest of the burning wreckage dropped into the abyss.
Then, remarkably, the creature snatched the back half—burning and broken where its mouth had touched it—and raised it from the depths before it could fall too far. There would be survivors in that, and the beast…the entity that reviled life…
