  1. Dear John,: A lot of Sburb concepts are mentioned here, as well as the kid's classpect. While John and Dave's are known fairly easily, consider how much Rose and Jade appear to fit the other's classpect at this point in the story. Jade with her weird knowledge of things and fortunetelling devices, Rose with her demon summoning book and eventual, actual magic wand. This page and the previous flash are the first times the concept of 'ascending' is made out to be Something Important.
  2.
  3. Also, consider that this Sassacre book was found in Dad's safe. He received it when John arrived with it, at the same time Nanna was killed. The inscription must have been extremely puzzling, and the reason why he conducted his own research into the meteors, as seen by the newspaper snippets in the safe."
  4.
  5. Retrieve arms from...: More 'retrieve arms', and the beginning of Jade's history of bucking Homestuck conventions.
  6.
  7. Drop pumpkin on Farmstink.: A rare appearance by the 'reader cursor'. Also, the exact moment when WV appearifies the pumpkin.
  8.
  9. [S] Jade: Play a silly flute refrain.: "Jan" refers to Jan Van Den Hemel, with whom Hussie produced a series of comedic video edits. The specific one he's referring to can be watched here (but really, you should watch all of them): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rYMykaNW6s
  10.
  11. Bonus: The Z key will send Jade to sleep.
  12.
  13. ==> (770): PM has a sendificator on her station. It could have happened off-screen.
  14.
  15. Jade: Set modus.: The Ouija modus shows up much later. Also, Jade mentioning she got this as a birthday gift means that it must have been a gift from when she was very young, and Grandpa was still alive.
  16.
  17. ==> (780): RETCON WATCH: Oil on one of the windows.
  18.
  19. ==> (784): The pumpkin she captchalogued is no longer in her inventory.
  20.
  21. ==> (789): Both the Squiddles and Slimer posters are real prints that can be purchased from Topatoco, which as previously mentioned served as the basis for John and Rose's shirt icons. The furry art is swiped from real internet furries.
  22.
  23. Jade: Explore the other half of your room!: One of the fenestrated planes we see Roxy use so much. Skaianet probably reverse-engineered these after Grandpa stole Jack's fourth wall.
  24.
  25. ==> (791): Becquerel is named after the standard unit for measuring radiation, in turned named after Henri Becquerel.
  26.
  27. Jade: Quickly retrieve firearms from wall.: Retrieve arms, again.
  28.
  29. Jade: Lose interest in fauna and never speak of it again.: A closer look of the SBaHJ poster that Dave drew furry faces on and sent to Jade. It says "TO: GG FROM: TG"
  30.
  31. Jade: Pick up your toys!: While the Manthro Chaps never took on much importance, they're certainly evocative of the Special Olympics brand of humor, particularly the Humanimals.
  32.
  33. RETCON WATCH: Oil on the trough.
  34.
  35. Jade: Change wardrobifier setting.: You can see Bec's symbol referred to as 'Devilbeast'.
  36.
  37. SBaHJ comic #7 was posted at this time.
  38.
  39. Jade: Retrieve fursuit from magic chest.: Is this the first appearance of the much-vaunted 'Scribble Mode'? (Note: check)
  40.
  41. Jade: Open chest.: So it's just like John's magic chest. But there's a picture of Grandpa and Bec instead. Also: Problem Sooth.
  42.
  43. Jade: Examine magic 8-ball and magic cue ball.: 8-ball's telling the truth.
  44.
  45. [S] Jade: Play a hauntingly relaxing bassline.: I agree about the OBVIOUS TRIVIA ZONE. And if you're reading these notes... So do you. So for obvious trivia: This (and the dream solo page) are the last of a series of flashes of the kids playing their music instruments (Dave just messed around with his beat machine instead). You can see one of her pumpkins get appearified away if you look close enough.
  46.
  47. Music: "Gardener" by Steve Everson in Homestuck Vol. 1-4
  48. Remix of "The Beginning of Something Really Excellent" by Robert J! Lake
  49.
  50. This page originally had different music:
  51. Music: "Guardian" by Bill Bolin in Homestuck Vol. 2
  52.
  53. Steve Everson (aka Tenebrais) shows up every now and again on the internet. he composed a few songs, but this is the only one that was included in the comic.
  54.
  55. Jade: Get down to business.: A lot of people don't realize these are flash pages.
  56.
  57. RETCON WATCH: Arm in her... Uh... Desktop wallpaper.
  58.
  59. Jade: Activate Pesterchum.: Just for the record, these are the trollhandles we see here: Karkat, Vriska, Sollux, Gamzee, Eridan.
  60.
  61. [S] Jade: Open FreshJamz!: I guess the implication here is that Dave likes to put weird beats on top of recordings of his friends playing instruments. Okay, here goes the music list:
  62.
  63. "Showtime Remix" by Gabe Nezovic in Homestuck Vol. 2
  64. Remix of "Showtime (Piano Refrain)" by Kevin Regamey
  65.
  66. "Aggrieve Remix" by Gabe Nezovic in Homestuck Vol. 2
  67. Remix of "Aggrieve (Violin Refrain)" by Andrew Huo
  68.
  69. "Verdancy (Bassline)" by Robert Blaker in Homestuck Vol. 2
  70.
  71. "Potential Verdancy" by Robert J! Lake in Homestuck Vol. 1-4
  72. Remix of "Verdancy (Bassline)" by Robert Blaker
  73.
  74. "Ohgodwhat" by Nick Smalley in Homestuck Vol. 3
  75.
  76. "Ohgodwhat Remix" by Michael Guy Bowman in Homestuck Vol. 3
  77. Remix of "Ohgodwhat" by Nick Smalley
  78.
  79. "Rediscover Fusion" by BurnedKirby in Homestuck Vol. 3
  80.
  81. "Crystalanthemums" by Alexander Rosetti in Homestuck Vol. 5
  82.
  83. "Explore Remix" by Gabe Nezovic in Homestuck Vol. 3
  84. Remix of "Explore" by George Buzinkai and Michael Guy Bowman
  85.
  86. This flash originally had different music (in place of Potential Verdancy and Crystalanthemums and sharing the same 'kid attributions'):
  87.
  88. "Kinetic Verdancy" by Bill Bolin in Homestuck Vol. 2
  89. Remix of "Verdancy (Bassline)" by Robert Blaker
  90.
  91. "Rediscover Fusion Remix" by Bill Bolin in Homestuck Vol. 3
  92. "Rediscover Fusion" by BurnedKirby
  93.
  94. BurnedKirby composed Rediscover Fusion and then left forever. More on Nick Smalley and Alexander Rossetti later.
  95.
  96. Jade: Open Echidna and go to mspaintadventures.com: As you can see, Echidna is Jade's web browser of choice. You can also appreciate some of MSPA's previous previous site design here. Also, this page is revisited as being one of Caliborn's shitty drawings while attempting to replicate Homestuck.
  97.
  98. [S] MIDNIGHT CREW: ACT 1031: We first see the act curtain 'mechanism'. I think the idea was that the 'sun' would be active during normal acts and the 'moon' would be active during intermissions 'as seen in the Intermission'; however Intermission 2 takes an entirely different route. Other than being introduced to the Felt, we can see (somewhat abstractly) the fated moment when they destroyed Spades' casino. The shot of SS drubbing Itchy uses assets made for a scrapped Midnight Crew walkaround in the background. The shot of the Midnight Crew jamming out with Problem Sleuth and his pals is lifted directly from a donation command. The spade at the end is identical to the 'Blood Spade' from the s=3 adventure. This page was supposed to be posted on Halloween, but was two days late (the FreshJamz page was posted on Halloween). This funnily exactly mirrors Intermission 2.
  99.
  100. Music: "Dead Shuffle" by Mark Hadley in Midnight Crew: Drawing Dead
  101.
  102. This page originally had different music (in the original version, the moon in the initial shot danced to the beat of the music):
  103. "Nightlife" by Bill Bolin in Homestuck Vol. 3
  104.
  105. ==> (834): You can see the username of the FurAffinity page that Hussie lifted most of Jade's art from.
  106.
  107. [S] Dave: STRIFE.: Beatdown (Strider Style)" by Curt Blakeslee in Homestuck Vol. 3
  108.
  109. Curt Blakeslee perhaps has the most disproportionate songs composed to influence on Homestuck music ratio, with only Beatdown (and a couple remixes of it) to his name. He has released a couple of independent albums as "norock"."
  110.
  111. [S] Jade: Descend.: Music: "Harleboss" by Malcolm Brown in Homestuck Vol. 3
  112. Remix of "Harlequin" by Mark Hadley
  113.
  114. Also in the future...: The station has a sentry worm because worms sometimes grow inside apples, and the station is apple-shaped. Also, there's the Regisword.
  115.
  116. ==> (captchalogue card faq): No word on whether other logic operations ever work on alchemy instead of just generating random crap. Hussie thought about it, and stated:
  117.
  118. "The thing is, AND and OR have graceful, easily understood means of being achieved through physical punch cards, by overlapping or double punching. How would these more exotic methods be achieved? You could of course go through the motions of computing them, calculating the new code, typing the code and punching it, but it loses the simplicity of original basic idea that lead to the combinations in the first place. Would going through such machinations just to invoke these more obscure operations actually be interesting? Probably not."
  119.
  120. The whole alchemy system actually has a prototype in the punch card machine briefly featured in Problem Sleuth.
  121.
  122. ==> (846): The Skaianet logo ties the Spirograph symbol to the atom symbol (found in loads of places in Jade's house as well as the exile station).
  123.
  124. ==> (855): The Dress of Eclectica's (Jade's blue dress from A5A2) name is a reference to this line. Also, Jake's eventual passion for blue ladies of various sorts stems from here.
  125.
  126. ==> (857): The Typheus minion, seen here and yet unnamed, is probably the first indication that the kid's weird browser names mean something.
  127.
  128. RETCON WATCH: Oil in the top left corner.
  129.
  130. Jade: Answer.: As you can see, Karkat 'trolls' instead of 'pesters'.
  131.
  132. ==> (867): Rose physically picks the laptop out of her tree modus here.
  133.
  134. ==> (869): Another 413. Well, it's a 314, but you get the idea.
  135.
  136. Again in the future...: The same map arrow is used here as in WV: Ascend, which helps indicate where PM might be headed.
  137.
  138. [S] Dave: Abscond.: The cover art of the Topatoco version of book 3 is based on this flash, when Dave poses with the smuppet's head.
  139.
  140. Music: "Beatdown Round 2" by Curt Blakeslee in Homestuck Vol. 3
  141. Remix of "Beatdown (Strider Style)" by Curt Blakeslee
  142.
  143. ==> (874): (He's talking about the final combined 8-planet session created in Act 6 Act 6)
  144.
  145. [S] Rose: Ascend.: Nannasprite's ability to generate ghost appliances reappears literally at the very end of the fucking story.
  146.
  147. Music: "Harleboss" by Malcolm Brown in Homestuck Vol. 3
  148. Remix of "Harlequin" by Mark Hadley
