- TROUBLESHOOT WEB HOSTING ISSUE
- Monday

- 6:51 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Hello!
- I'd like to invite you to apply to my job. Please review the job post and apply if you're available.
- Brendan Carling
- DM
- 6:51 PM
- Dustin Miller sent the proposal
- Hi,
- I work as a Linux Systems Administrator for a reputable hosting company in the US and would be happy to assist. What type of web hosting plan do you have (Shared, VPS, Dedicated, etc)?
- I can take a look today, if you'd like.
- Cheers,
- Dustin

- Dustin Miller
- Also, what is the command you are issuing when you receive the errors? If you still need help I will be available for the next few hours, and any time after 9AM (CST) tomorrow.
- Cheers!

- Brendan Carling
- hi
- I discovered the error. My hosting was shared. I needed VPS. Are you familiar with Amazon AWS?
- DM
- 3:38 PM
- Dustin Miller
- I am.
- BC
- 3:39 PM
- Brendan Carling
- I need my web application installed in AWS
- DM
- 3:40 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Can you tell me a bit more about the application?
- BC
- 3:44 PM
- Brendan Carling
- What do you need to know?
- DM
- 3:53 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Just any information regarding that application that may be relevant to the migration such as required software, dependencies, etc.
- Is it a custom application you developed, a third party application with documentation, etc.
- BC
- 3:54 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Gee, I dont know. The only thing I know if that shared hosting was no good. I need VPS. It's a web application used LaRavel framework.
- It's something I collaborated in.
- DM
- 3:56 PM
- Dustin Miller
- No worries, I'm sure I could figure it out. I need to leave in a few minutes to pick up my fiance from work, however, so I won't be available to take a look for 1.5-2 hours. Also, honestly, I would need to adjust my current bid to $50, it would be a more involving job. If all of that is okay with you I can message you when I get home and we can go from there. I understand if you'd rather post a new job and find a cheaper rate, though.
- BC
- 3:56 PM
- Brendan Carling
- It's a simple web application that records interactions between a homeless charity and rough sleepers.
- DM
- 3:57 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Is rough sleepers the new PC term for homeless people? I've never heard it phrased quite like that.
- BC
- 3:58 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Im not sure. It's just a term I use. lol. A homeless person is someone who has not a home of their own. But they may not be sleeping on the street. They could be staying with family or sleeping on friend's sofas.
- A rough sleeper is a homeless person who has to sleep on the street.
- Im not sure if I've explained the difference clearly.
- Not all homeless people are forced to sleep on the street.
- DM
- 4:01 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Yeah, that's indeed a valid point.
- I live in Austin, we have quite a lot of both types.
- BC
- 4:06 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Texas?
- DM
- 4:07 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Yep.
- BC
- 4:07 PM
- Brendan Carling
- I think I heard Ted Cruz was vulnerable in the mid terms.
- Do you follow politics?
- DM
- 5:31 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Only the shit-storms. I tend to avoid politics and religion like the plague, otherwise.
- For example, I only need to know that John McCain died, not how people feel about it. Anything more than that just gets messy.
- BC
- 5:42 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Ah right lol.
- Politics are a touchy subject in USA.
- The rep/dem thing is like the Brexit thing in the UK.
- Saying you are one or the other is likely to piss people off. They take it very personally if your politics isn't the same as theirs.
- DM
- 5:46 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Yeah, and no single party has everything right and the average voter is under-educated and misinformed. I'm sure a lot of hardcore reps/dems would be surprised to discover what it is they actually support.
- Are you from the UK?
- BC
- 6:07 PM
- Brendan Carling
- I do like Watter's World. He tends to show up that people either dont know what they believe or don't know why.
- Are you experienced withy LaRavel?
- DM
- 6:09 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Not really, I am just a Linux Admin, I don't do any programming, just some server side scripting. I could move an app from one server to another but troubleshooting the code itself is usually not something I take on.
- BC
- 6:09 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Right. I see.
- 6:09 PM
- So about my project.
- DM
- 6:16 PM
- Dustin Miller
- I'm comfortable installing and configuring php and it's various modules/dependencies. Happy to take a look at it and obviously there would be no cost if for some reason I can't get it working, but like I said I would need to increase my bid to $50 since it would be setting up a server from scratch, finding and resolving dependencies, etc versus the simple troubleshooting of the original project.
- BC
- 6:26 PM
- Brendan Carling
- There was no troubleshooting required. It just wasn't possible.
- Ok. Well thanks for the interest and the bid. I will speak to some other freelancers and get their bids.
- DM
- 6:29 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Yeah, I get that, that's why I was asking about your hosting package initially. Seems like you were mostly just lacking the php-gd module which is an easy fix compared to setting up a new server and migrating to it, so ruling out Shared hosting was my first troubleshooting step. Regardless, best of luck, let me know if I can be of any assistance.
- BC
- 6:37 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Yeah. That was the problem.
- BC
- 9:49 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Are you able to upload files to Amazon AWS?
- DM
- 9:51 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Sure. What's the problem? Can upload via FTP/SFTP/SCP, etc.
- BC
- 9:54 PM
- Brendan Carling
- ok
- DM
- 9:59 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Do you need files uploaded...? Not sure where the question is headed...
- BC
- 10:04 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Of course I do
- DM
- 10:06 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Okay, just let me know how I can help.
- BC
- 10:07 PM
- Brendan Carling
- lol
- DM
- 10:09 PM
- Dustin Miller
- I must be missing the joke..
- BC
- 10:26 PM
- Brendan Carling
- It's just that I thought it was pretty clear that I need my web application hosted on AWS.
- Because my first message to you was to ask if you are able to upload files to AWS.
- 10:29 PM
- Im told that I can bring up an ec2 instance - someone has sent an image with all the configuring done for the web application.
- I dont know if that makes any sense to you.
- 10:32 PM
- Right. You are away. Im going to bed. I'll see if I can find someone tomorrow. Night!
- DM
- 10:37 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Well, that's true, but you also previously told me you were looking into other freelancers and I already withdrew my bid, so I wasn't sure what it was you were wanting from me. I've already told you I could migrate the application to AWS, and I could have had it done four hours ago.
- Sure, you can load an EC2 instance from a custom image pretty easily.
- BC
- 10:38 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Ah. Sorry. I didn't realise you withdrew your bid.
- No problem.
- Im sure its fantastically easy,,,,,if you know how to do it.
- DM
- 10:43 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Yeah, I withdrew it when you said you were looking for other freelancers. Happy to help if you need it, I just withdrew to clean up my list of projects. I'm sure it's quite easy as well, but I had to increase my bid to $50 since it's more involving than simply installing a PHP module. My original bid would have netted me about $24, and I don't even get out of bed for $24 lol. I'm sure you can find someone from India or a similarly cheap country to do it for less though.
- BC
- 10:43 PM
- Brendan Carling
- You just said it was very easy.
- Do you know how to do it?
- DM
- 10:44 PM
- Dustin Miller
- True?
- BC
- 10:44 PM
- Brendan Carling
- If someone has sent an image to my AWS
- DM
- 10:45 PM
- Dustin Miller
- I've never migrated a laravel project specifically but I work with Linux, AWS, and software I'm not personally familiar with every day, professionally. I couldn't recite to you every specific step, but I could figure out how to do it in a short amount of time. It's just what I do.
- If someone has sent you a pre-made image, that's even easier, really.
- It should have all of the proper libraries, etc.
- BC
- 10:46 PM
- Brendan Carling
- so she says
- do u want to have a look?
- DM
- 10:46 PM
- Dustin Miller
- How large is the image file?
- BC
- 10:46 PM
- Brendan Carling
- I dunno. I dunno how u access it on aws
- DM
- 10:46 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Is it already added to your AWS account, or available via the internet otherwise?
- BC
- 10:47 PM
- Brendan Carling
- she added it to my account
- 10:50 PM
- right. I can't stay awake. its 5am here. I see u typing but nothing appears. lol
- DM
- 10:50 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Well, here's the thing...I'm more than happy to help, I have been trying to help all day...and maybe I'm just mis-reading the situation, but we have had a somewhat catty conversation ever since politics came up lol
- 10:51 PM
- I literally could have had this handled like 4 hours ago
- BC
- 10:51 PM
- Brendan Carling
- no no no. I think im just tired.
- had nothing to do with chat earlier.
- DM
- 10:51 PM
- Dustin Miller
- No worries man, I know how that goes.
- BC
- 10:51 PM
- Brendan Carling
- think? im wrecked.
- DM
- 10:52 PM
- Dustin Miller
- How about we just regroup in the morning....or whatever that == where you are
- (edited)
- It's about 11pm here, I'll be available from 9AM CST until...all damn day
- BC
- 10:52 PM
- Brendan Carling
- I was trying to get the image off the other person who had it hosted on their aws
- DM
- 10:54 PM
- Dustin Miller
- No worries, just hit me up tomorrow and let me know how I can help. I know AWS and Linux like the back of my hand, we will figure it out.
- BC
- 10:55 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Do u want to take a look?
- I can give u the credentials
- Or to u know any other way I can host it?
- DM
- 11:00 PM
- Dustin Miller
- I can take a look
- If you can tell me what the image is, and how to verify the application is running properly (does it have a URL I can hit to test, etc?) I can get it working.
- Have you ever had it working, does it need existing data imported, or do you just need it up and running from a fresh state?
- Today
- BC
- 6:31 AM
- Brendan Carling
- I know none of this
- BC
- 8:05 AM
- Brendan Carling
- Sorry man. I fell asleep.
- BC
- 8:25 AM
- Brendan Carling
- Let me know when you're back on.
- (PS. Sorry if I was catty last night. I was soooooooooo tired!)
- DM
- 5:49 PM
- Dustin Miller
- No worries on that, I think it was showing it as 5am in your timezone, if that's accurate, I totally understand.
- BC
- 5:57 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Yeah. it was 5am.
- Good day?
- DM
- 6:14 PM
- Dustin Miller
- It has been a day, I can say that. Yourself?
- BC
- 6:55 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Its been a quiet day. Do you want take a look at this was thing then?
- AWS
- BC
- 7:24 PM
- Brendan Carling
- u there?
- DM
- 7:32 PM
- Dustin Miller
- removed this message
- BC
- 7:33 PM
- Brendan Carling
- It's alright. Are you willing take a look?
- DM
- 7:34 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Sure. How are we going to go about this?
- BC
- 7:35 PM
- Brendan Carling
- It just occurred to me. Are you familiar with any other option?
- DM
- 7:35 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Other than?
- BC
- 7:35 PM
- Brendan Carling
- I was gonna suggest if you want take a look first, and if you think you can do it, I can upload the money to escrow and hire you?
- Other than AWS.
- I mean any other free option?
- DM
- 7:37 PM
- Dustin Miller
- A free way to host a php application? I can't really think of a way i'd recommend. Is this a high volume application? Do you have any idea how much CPU/RAM/DISK space it needs?
- AWS is pretty cheap as long as you don't spin up an instance that is larger than you need.
- BC
- 7:38 PM
- Brendan Carling
- The free allowance with AWS should be sufficient.
- DM
- 7:38 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Yeah, I miss that. Mine just expired and now I have to pay amazon =(
- If the image is uploaded and shared to you like she said I can login and grab that image and make a test server and we can see how things go.
- BC
- 7:40 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Can you check?
- 7:40 PM

- Dustin Miller
- Sure, give me a few, I will see what I can find
- BC
- 7:46 PM
- Brendan Carling
- ok
- DM
- 8:03 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Is the current running instance in your EC2 account where it's currently being ran from or is that unrelated?
- BC
- 8:07 PM
- Brendan Carling
- That's unrelated. Ahem......I was waiting for you to come online. Then another freelancer messaged me and wanted to take a look. I let him....but after a few hours he stopped replying. I guess that is what he was doing.
- DM
- 8:09 PM
- Dustin Miller
- How was he attempting the migration? Did he have access to the original server where you received the error?
- 8:11 PM
- It doesn't seem that your account owns any images related to this. Can you reach out to $her and have her re-share to teachme.websites@gmail.com?
- Alternatively, if you can provive me ssh access to wherever the app is originally hosted I could try to migrate it manually. If there is indeed an image that exists to deploy this application that would definitely be preferable but I'll take what I can get.
- BC
- 8:13 PM
- Brendan Carling
- tbh I think she might have been bullshitting. She is a bitch
- DM
- 8:13 PM
- Dustin Miller
-
- That's the way it goes.
- BC
- 8:14 PM
- Brendan Carling
- would it be easier to install it locally on my laptop?
- DM
- 8:14 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Do you guys work at the same company or is she a freelancer or something?
- Does this serve a webpage or is it just software that interacts with other software?
- BC
- 8:17 PM
- Brendan Carling
- She's a useless freelancer.
- Does what serve a webpage?
- She uploaded it to her AWS account. She told me all the things she could do and was doing. After a week of working very hard,,,,,,,it turned out that she hadn't actually done anything after she uploaded it to AWS.
- She told me she would send the image to my AWS account. Clearly she hasn't though. She is a right bitch, and a lazy bitch at that.
- DM
- 8:20 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Damn. Sorry to hear that. I've heard some many horror stories from my clients on here.
- This laravel application, does it serve a webpage? How do we know if it's working?
- BC
- 8:24 PM
- Brendan Carling
- It wasn't a horror story. she was just full of hot air. She was always telling me what she was doing. In the end she hadn't done anything. It was just annoying to have had high hopes and then just have my time wasted.
- It was working when she uploaded it. It worked when my friend had it hosted locally.
- 8:28 PM
- Im running to the shop. Back in 20 mins.
- DM
- 8:31 PM
- Dustin Miller
- No worries. I just need access to the actual files so that I can get it working for you. There's nothing I can do until I have that. I will be around for another few hours at least, take your time.
- You have access to a server where it is currently working properly? Or the install files, at least?
- BC
- 9:21 PM
- Brendan Carling
- I have the application files and the db
- Let me ask you.....do you develop in Laravel?
- DM
- 9:24 PM
- Dustin Miller
- No, I don't, but I also don't develop in Apache, Wordpress, Magento, Docker, PHP, or any of the other applications I migrate lol.
- BC
- 9:28 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Ah ok
- Do you have an email I can send the files to?

- I'm nosey. If you were British I would say Ian.
- But you might be Spanish so it could be Ignatious

- Who the fuck has ever heard of a Spaniard named Dustin Miller?
- lol

- The UK is comprised of four countries and is within driving distance of some of the most backwards countries in the world...But who's counting?
- BC
- 9:54 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Ahem. The UK is comprised of two countries (England and Scotland) and a principality (Wales) and a province (Northern Ireland).
- And the UK isn't within driving distance of anywhere but the Republic of Ireland, unless you have a car that drives under water.
- DM
- 9:55 PM
- Dustin Miller
- The United Kingdom (UK) comprises four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.[1][2]
- I don't really care about the semantics.
- BC
- 9:55 PM
- Brendan Carling
- If that is a wiki page, then it seriously needs updating!
- DM
- 9:55 PM
- Dustin Miller
- it is but that's the general description on every top result in google lol
- BC
- 9:56 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Although Northern Irish people do claim to be the best wee country in the world.....they are only a province.
- I am guessing all those pages were written by Americans.
- DM
- 9:57 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Wales was officially recognised as a country in December 2011 by the influential International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) - but it hasn’t really been a Principality for hundreds of years.
- Despite the relatively recent recognition of Wales as a country, even though it has its own National Assembly, anthem, language and our own rugby and football teams, it hasn’t been a Principality since the 16th century.
- It's the internet, are you implying we control the WORLD WIDE web?
- BC
- 9:57 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Wales could maybe be considered a country....at a stretch.....but really it is just a part of England. But NI is by no means a country. We haven't even had a government for 18months.
- DM
- 9:57 PM
- Dustin Miller
- If so, what does that say about yourself? lol
- BC
- 9:58 PM
- Brendan Carling
- It is still a principality. It has a prince. Prince Charles is the Prince of Wales.
- DM
- 9:59 PM
- Dustin Miller
- No one outside of a Monarchy cares about the royal family, we view it in a logical sense.
- BC
- 9:59 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Wales was recognised as a country by the ISO. Im not sure how much sway they would hold in confirming sovereignty lol
- I have a Welsh friend. I must ask him if he considers it a country......I don't think they really do. It's basically England with a dopey accent and lots of closed down coal mines.
- But anyway.....
- IM getting cranky. So it must be about 5 hours past my bed time.
- 10:02 PM
- Can I leave the AWS thing for you to take a look at?
- DM
- 10:02 PM
- Dustin Miller
- "Wales was a principality, once upon a time. But that was in 1542. 472 years ago… 472 years.
- Wales is a country. A nation. We have our own laws. We have a Government, a legislature.
- But what, pray tell, is a "principality"?
- The Oxford English Dictionary describes a principality as being: "The territory held or governed by a prince."
- Now some may offer the Prince of Wales up as an answer to the issue at hand, but that would be wholly inappropriate, since Charles holds no constitutional responsibility over our homeland. His designation is granted by the Queen, and is an entirely traditional title.
- No, Wales is a country (472 years-worth of country-dom, remember!).
- In fact, in 2008 the Welsh Government issued a statement on this very issue:
- "Wales is not a principality. Although we are joined with England by land, and we are part of Great Britain, Wales is a country in its own right."
- So that's that. Now let's get on with supporting Team Wales! C'MON CYMRU!"
- That comes from the BBC lol
- Anyway, cranky indeed. Take a nap, I think we're done here. Best of luck with your project.
- BC
- 10:03 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Ahem. I think it may come from the comment section of the BBC. lol.
- It's some Welsh nationalist trying to convince everyone that Wales is a country.
- What. U going to give the project a miss?
- DM
- 10:05 PM
- Dustin Miller
- I withdrew my proposal roughly 24~ hours ago and everything else has been a waste of my time since. I don't have time for this nonsense. Let's just leave it at that. G'night.
- BC
- 10:07 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Oh ok. A bit of an over reaction because Wales isn't a country.....but ok.
- Cheers for the chat man! All the best.
- DM
- 10:15 PM
- Dustin Miller
- It's not about whether or not Wales is a country, I give no shits about Wales. The UK is like 40x smaller than the US, I pretty much only think about it when Ricky Gervais has a new comedy special...It's about your general attitude over the past 24 hours. You can blame it on lack of sleep all you want but I'm tired AF and I somehow still manage to function as an adult.
- Best of luck, no hard feelings, just done with it.
- BC
- 10:17 PM
- Brendan Carling
- I'm not sure what exactly I am supposed to have said or done. lol. But you are the one who has thrown the tantrum.....not me. So don't be blaming me for anything. lol.
- DM
- 10:17 PM
- Dustin Miller
- Yet you're the one who has apologized for your attitude twice?
- idk
- doesn't add up.
- BC
- 10:18 PM
- Brendan Carling
- Not a hope.
- DM
- 10:18 PM
- Dustin Miller
- lol
- Alright, legit done with this. Gnight.
- BC
- 10:18 PM
- Brendan Carling
- I apologised once. Not because I thought I was being catty. It was because you accused me of being catty.....and even though I couldn't see how, I apologised as I guessed it was because I was tired.
- Yeah. it's cool. No hard feelings. lol
