- 1) My living situation is very lucky. My fiancé and I rent an 1.5-bedroom apartment from my parents for $1400/month, which is $200-400 under-market (hard to say exactly). I live on the north end of the East Bay so our location helps, but the discount from my parents is also significant. That's privilege right there. On top of our easier rent, we wouldn't have been able to land this place without me being related to the landlords, because there's so much competition for open apartments. Neither of us had great credit when we moved in. Anyway, if we suddenly had to move we'd probably leave the area, which we're planning to do eventually anyway.
- 2) I have a car, it's a 2001 Toyota Corolla. It's maybe worth $3k? So I use that in the East Bay, but I also ride BART a lot. I refuse to drive in SF, so there it's mostly BART and I feel in the gaps with Lyft.
- 3) Roughly 30% of my paycheck goes straight into my 401k. $1500 goes into my checking account every two weeks (so $3k/month). The rest goes into emergency savings (can't remember exact amount right now). A little less than half of the $3k is rent, and a little more than half is everything else. Since I support us and my fiancé is the homemaker, I transfer $200 to him every month as fun money for hobbies and such. We eat out like twice a week, but our taste in restaurants is mostly low-brow and includes fast food. Social engagements with 3+ people are like every two weeks and for those we're a little more extravagant. We both like to party so alcohol and weed are probably our most expensive recreational habits, followed closely by books. I don't budget specific amounts for any of this but I keep an eye on how much we're spending throughout the month to keep it in check.
