Matsushita and Lee stand inside at the control console, and the doctor triggers the fire system in the server farm. Jets of white gas flood the chambers, flashing red warning lights activate, and the screaming intensifies. When the jets go silent, so do the screams, and the creatures retreat into the corner. They’ve already shit their black resin all over the walls—Becker assumes it’s shit, but really he has no clue—and they huddle against one another like rabbits in a hutch.

“Jesus Christ,” he breathes.

Duncan laughs and tongues the inside of her lower lip like she’s dipping snuff. “You like that? Working on getting it automated. Like if they hit the window at all, pshhhh!” With this, she spreads her fingers like an expanding cloud.

“That’s why they don’t know it’s a cage,” Duncan says.

“Synthetic resin,” Matsushita says, beaming as he leans out of the office. “They won’t try to dig out or cut open the floor when they think they made it. If they hit the windows, we can discipline them with halon and liquid nitrogen. Mackie design. He used to work for my company.”
