“Pan­ther, we got­ta go!” Hold­ing Char­lie close to her, Sa­rah kicked out and dropped through the shat­tered win­dow, the ny­lon rope fizz­ing as she rap­pelled down­ward to­ward safe­ty.

Her fa­ther didn’t hear her. Time had fro­zen for him, he and Aslanov aim­ing at each oth­er through the down­pour. The Rus­sian’s smile fad­ed, and he pulled the trig­ger.

Fish­er did the same, pac­ing shots across the cor­ri­dor as he moved back to­ward the win­dow. He had no cov­er, and no­where to go but out. Twist­ing into open air, he leapt the nar­row gap be­tween the ledge and the shift­ing rope, snatch­ing it with his off-hand.

Grav­i­ty took hold of Fish­er and he dropped, fric­tion burn­ing hot through his gloves as the rope shrieked through his grip.
