  21. You know what's worse than starting off your jump in the local equivalent of Hell? Starting it off on a sinking ship, getting to the life raft with your brother, father, and father's bodyguard, then slowly start running out of provisions only for your father to promptly blow his bodyguard's brains out, then doing the same to himself.
  22.
  23. Yeah, we were plenty traumatized by that.
  24.
  25. I, on the other hand, found myself cut off from essentially everything that I should have been able to access. Which is rather disturbing, but then again, this is a comic book universe - it's not escaped my notice that my last name is Queen and my brother's name is Oliver - so all I could do at the time was hope that I wasn't there just to be an object lesson further down the line. And well, let's be honest, for all his insecurities my brother was definitely something of a bleeding heart. And it was apparently this island's mission to beat that out of him.
  26.
  27. "Oh shit, this must mean I'm on the CW."
  28. >"What the hell- you know the name of the island, Gil?"
  29. "Er, whoops. And no, Ollie, that's not the name of the island, it's just that the movies wouldn't be this ridiculous."
  30. >"Movies? What? Are you okay?"
  31. "Prrrobably not. You know what, I'm just going to go back to setting up rainwater caches. Also if you ever set a fire in the open on this island I will cut off your beard."
  32. >"Oh, come on! That's harsh. Just because dad put you in the boy scouts to get you out of the library..."
  33.
  34. And so things went... well, not exactly swimmingly. Lian Yu, Slade, Fyers, Ivo, ARGUS, the broad strokes were the same as they might have been, although having another Queen who was willing to do what had to be done did smooth some things over a bit. Five long years, though. Many, many conflicts. Near misses. Scars. Pointless drama. Being put to work in ARGUS' labs, because that gave them more direct leverage over Ollie. And the occasional beating I'd get because he was too much of an asshat to follow orders, just so that he'd see me beaten. They actually stopped doing that when I said, 'why don't I just put on an act so my idiot brother will think there are consequences, while NOT delaying my work in the lab?', which earned me some points with The Wall.
  35.
  36. And then they started putting me on field missions... just... argh. Never paired up with Ollie - they made sure to keep one of us near by as a chain on the other - but up to the time they cut his strings, it was either lab time or fieldwork. But once they cut his strings, I walked away as well. Because sure, they're out there fighting the good fight, I'm not naive enough to disbelieve that. But there are other things in the world that needed my attention; I told them to call me after I was done with my vacation.
  37.
  38. So naturally I was in a hotel in Central City in 2013 when the particle accelerator went up.
  39.
  40. So... here's the thing. After I got back to the mainland, I was myself again, if arguably rusty. Before the accident, I was a polymath with an eidetic memory, a once-in-a-century mind but still well within human bounds ... if you exclude thought partitioning and acceleration, anyway, but that still keeps me (arguably) within human limitations and not at the level of, say, a supercomputer.
  41.
  42. After the accelerator went up, all of that changed. The increase in intellect still worked in concert with other abilities, and what should have been a linear increase in my brain's computational ability became a geometric increase. That, coupled with the way everything else here worked... well. The end result was that I took basically nothing serious, reinvented fields of science from scratch out of boredom, and basically stole a couple pages from Jim Carrey when it came to hamming it up and being arrogant.
  43.
  44. It kept life interesting, though, and it gave me the time to go over everything I got from Skynet, go 'well these are just inefficient as hell', and refine its designs because I'm not a child throwing a thirty year long temper tantrum because papa wanted to spank me, I'm a scientist, nay, a science lord, and the laws of science will obey me!
  45.
  46. Hm. Little too far? I mean, those demons didn't seem to think so, considering they keep complaining about my stealing knowledge from them and their desire to drag my soul to Hell. A pity that one can literally tap into different planes with the Kaleidoscope, weaponize the energy output, and wound them grievously enough to force them to withdraw. Hard the first time, but around the tenth or eleventh time, trivial.
  47.
  48. Either way, it was still fun, hamming it up. It kept the misanthropy from being overwhelming, at least, and having robots and drones to send out whenever someone called me and wanted something was helpful.
