 Formal vs. Informal Communication . Organizational communication can flow in many different directions and can take on various ways of being communicated through formal or informal channels. To illustrate this further, Chapter One of your textbook discusses formal and informal channels of communication. Provide an example of formal communication and an example of informal communication. Which type of communication do your prefer in a work environment? Why?

 Putting Theory into Practice . In Chapter Two of your textbook, the author discusses four different communication principles. Choose one principle and briefly explain it in your own words. Summarize what the principle is about and share an example from your own life that illustrates it. How do you believe this communication principle can help us understand organizational communication?

 Article Critique – Does Communication Matter in ALL Fields? Read the article, A tool kit for the real world. In this article, the author discusses the importance of communication skills within a field that many people may not believe strong communication skills are necessary. Write a paper about your thoughts on this article. In your paper, be sure to also address the following:

 a. Do you believe that strong communication skills are necessary in every type of organization?

 b. What type of organization do you want to work for in the future?

 c. How will having strong communication skills help you within that field?

 Please make sure to reference the article and at least one other article in your paper. This can be your textbook, one of the recommended articles, or another article that you have located.

 The paper must be two pages in length and formatted according to APA style. Cite your resources in text and on the reference page.  Self-Assessment of Organizational Communication Skills . Many people believe that organizational communication skills should come naturally and are not difficult to obtain. However, this week’s readings might have given you a different perception. Effective organizational communication skills actually require a lot of time and practice. Complete a self-assessment of your organizational communication skills by answering the following questions:

 a. Which area(s) do you feel are the most developed for you?

 b. Which area(s) do you need the most improvement?

 c. Based on the course material that you read this week, what are some ways that you plan on improving the development of your organizational communication skills?

 Using Active Listening . One of the most effective ways that we can improve our communication within the organizational context is through adapting the language that we use. A simple, yet effective way to do this is through the method that your textbook describes as “active listening”. This strategy is explained in Chapter Four of your textbook. Describe a time when you were trying to communicate with another person and active listening would have been helpful. What was the situation? How did he/she respond? How did you respond? What could you have done to improve the communication?
