  1. After King Arthur had been brought back to his senses,
  2. he drew his sword from its scabbard, and it cast a great
  3. light, as though two tapers had been lit. This was the sword
  4. he had pulled out of the stone. And the letters that were
  5. written on the sword said that it was named Excalibur—this
  6. is a Hebrew word that means in French “cuts through iron
  7. and steel and wood,”and the inscription told the truth, as
  8. you will hear in the story a little farther along. When the
  9. king had drawn the sword, he struck out into the greatest
  10. part of the throng and hit one knight between the
  11. shoulders so hard that he cut his body in two. The blow was
  12. great, and the good sword cut through the saddle blanket
  13. and sliced through the horse’s backbone from one end to
  14. the other, so that knight and horse fell down into one
  15. heap. Then he struck right and left and stirred up such an
  16. awful fracas that all who saw him were terrified. They did
  17. not dare face up to him, but fled and yielded the ground to
  18. him.
