- Homework: p. 94 exercise 5 - Identify who or what does the bold action in each sentence. (Identify the agent of that action.)
- 1 Norman
- 2 people
- 3 students
- 4 John’s sister
- 5 John
- 6 John’s friend
- 7 Norman
- 8 children
- ---
- There are three different ways infinitives can follow verbs:
- 1 verb + infinitive (John decided to collect stamps.)
- 2 verb + object + infinitive (John invited Norman to see his stamp collection.)
- 3 verb + (object) + infinitive (John wants to find stamps. John wants Norman to find stamps.)
- ---
- Pattern 1
- p. 96 exercise 7 - Complete sentences 1-5 with your own ideas and infinitive phrases.
- 1 to educate their children. (Notice the singular use of “they” for “a good parent”.)
- 2 to read.
- 3 to buy nice toys for their kids.
- 4 to be terrible.
- 5 to talk in class.
- exercise 8 - Ask your partner about three of these things. (What you say to your partner should include “you”, not “he or shee”.)
- 1 “Tell me about a responsibility you often neglect to do.”
- or: “What is a responsibility you often neglect to do?”
- ---
- Pattern 2
- - When an object goes between the verb and the infinitive, that object is the agent of the infinitive.
- “The teacher told the student to close his book.” = The student needs to close his book.
- “I taught my sister to play the piano.” = Now my sister knows how to play.
- “My sister taught herself to play the piano.” - We use reflexive pronouns if the agent of the infinitive is also the subject of the main verb.
- ---
- Pattern 3
- Some verbs that may or may not have an object need “for” if there is one.
- I arranged to finish before 6. She intends to graduate in June.
- I arranged for him to finish before 6. She intends for him to graduate in June.
- p. 98 exercise 10 - Ask other students about some of these things.
- ---
- Homework: p. 97 exercise 9 - Make sentences with these pairs of verbs (the first is the main verb and the second is the infinitive). At least three should use reflexive pronouns.
