  24. Release Notes:
  25.
  26. The Drums have returned just a year after their debut with a follow-up
  27. that puts them a step above a lot of contemporary indie bands.
  28.
  29. The surf-pop influences that provided an undertone to their debut EP
  30. Summertime! somehow add a level of sophistication on this catchy but
  31. mature second album.
  32.
  33. Traditionally, the sophomore album is a tricky one for bands who rise
  34. to any kind of prominence with their debut, but The Drums should have
  35. no issues.
  36.
  37. Portamento establishes that the band have staying power, with tracks
  38. like 'Days' being as haunting as their are catchy.
  39.
  40. Rather than breaking from the indie formula, they've made it their own
  41. through excellent production and little touches that make this feel
  42. different.
  43.
  44. Tracks like 'What You Were' carry a Stone Roses influence, with the
  45. backing vocals being reminiscent of the Beach Boys at times, whilst the
  46. brass is a very nice addition.
  47.
  48. Fans of Hot Chip will probably lap up songs like electro-indie 'Hard To
  49. Lose', which provide a nice departure in mood from the rest of the
  50. record.
  51.
  52. Still guitar-driven at its heart, Portamento is an album that showcases
  53. its influences and the roots of indie music without feeling like The
  54. Drums are pandering to their fans.
  55.
  56. Tracks like 'Searching For Heaven' are a departure for the album, with
  57. big club influences coming through on the synth, without sounding
  58. forced.
  59.
  60. Several of these tracks could become modern indie classics given half a
  61. chance, and The Drums have crafted a consistent second album that
  62. builds on, and surpasses, its predecessor.
