  1. Chapter 6
  2.
  3. >Soft brushes on your face rouse you back.
  4. >You cough once, spreading tiny specks everywhere.
  5. >Ash.
  6. >The dark sky rained the particles, some settling on your face.
  7. >You brush them off your cheeks.
  8. >You turn to your left, noticing a pony hunched by you.
  9. >You heard the sobs through the hooves clamped over her face.
  10. >You knew this pony.
  11. >To be specific, a changeling.
  12. >Chrysalis.
  13. “Christie…” You try to reach her with your hand, only to seeing fall to the ashen ground helplessly.
  14. >She freezes for a moment, before slowly lowering her hooves.
  15. >You notice her glossy green eyes through the holes on her leg, it fixated on you.
  16. >You finally see her jet black face, with the stream of tears coming down her eyes.
  17. >Her eyes are wide open, as if shocked to see you.
  18. >”A-Anon?”
  19. >You respond by coughing to the ground, blowing around more ash.
  20. >”Anon!” She jumps to you, her forelegs sliding under your head and pulling you up to her.
  21. >She holds you for a while, unsettling more ashes.
  22. “Good to see you too, Christie.”
  23. >She lets out a torrent of sobs, crying into your shoulders.
  24. “I’m not dead, dammit, Christie…”
  25.
  26. >You open your eyes to the blazing view of the town.
  27. >Ponies screamed as they ran for cover, fear stinking up your taste buds.
  28. >You were against that other queen for a second- and bam, here you are.
  29. >You look up to the broken window, and the burning house it lead into.
  30. >That was the queen’s mansion.
  31. >What on equestria?
  32. >You turn around again, trying to get a better glimpse of the situation.
  33. >You hoof kicks something soft and you look down to Anon.
  34. “What the hell happened, Anon- did we get her?”
  35. >No response.
  36. >Anon is sprawled on the grass, an arm curved over his head.
  37. >You give him a soft kick again, to which you illicit no response.
  38. >Your heart drops a little, and you immediately crouch over and put your ear to his chest.
  39. >No sound.
  40. >It must be your ears, that is all!
  41. >You hold up his wrist, and put another one on it.
  42. >Anon did this to pick up ponies’ pulses.
  43. >After a few second, you give up.
  44. >Nothing.
  45. >NOTHING.
  46. >Your horn lights up, as you begin to feel his body.
  47. >You are Chrysalis, and you are scared.
  48.
  49. >You pat Chrysalis’ back, calming her down a little.
  50. “Hey, hey- come on now, we’re both fine.”
  51. >You tap over your body, making sure nothing is missing.
  52. >You push her back and each of her forelegs with a hand, and smile.
  53. “See? No-“
  54.
  55. “-thing..” You whisper to yourself.
  56. >No heart beat, no thought, and most importantly-
  57. >No emotions.
  58. >You desperately put up two hooves to his chest, and give it a single pump.
  59. >His body lets out a little jump, before going limp again.
  60. >You give another pump, getting almost no reaction this time.
  61. >Your hoof-pumps dissolve into desperate jabs, as you scream in anguish.
  62. >No… You can’t lose him.
  63. >You just can’t.
  64. >You raise your hooves high, and deliver one final blow to his heart.
  65. >Still nothing.
  66. >You break into tears, burying your face on his still-warm body.
  67. >You find your hoof still beating at his corpse, albeit very weakly.
  68. >You look up to his smug expression.
  69. >So calm.
  70. >You trail a hoof over his face, your decrepit, holed hoof.
  71. >There was warmth, but it faded away fast.
  72. >You stay there in silence, looking down to your long lost friend.
  73. >And then you take a deep breath.
  74. >No.
  75. >Not like this.
  76. >You feel the tickle of mana oozing to your horn, and it begins to glow.
  77. >Not like-
  78.
  79. “-This?” You flick her leg.
  80. >Christie recoils on the sting, but she’s smiling.
  81. “Something wrong, Christie?”
  82. >”No, nothing’s wrong. Just wanted to make sure.”
  83. “Make sure on what?”
  84. >She opens her mouth excitedly, but then clams up.
  85. >Her expression disappears, and she looks away.
  86. >”It’s fine really, just a test.”
  87. “Awww.” You nudge her foreleg.
  88. “Don’t tell me you’re going soft with me.”
  89. >She opens her mouth once again, but stops herself.
  90. >She hides a blush with a hoof over her face, as she turns away from you.
  91. >”W-we should go.”
  92. “Yeah, the other queen is still rampant.”
  93. >”Right.”
  94.
  95. >You close your eyes and tap his chest with your horn.
  96. >The glow slides into him, disappearing under his skin.
  97. >You keep your horn in place, concentrating.
  98. >You found your way to his still heart, feeling around it.
  99. >And then, you squeezed it.
  100. >No response.
  101. >You massage it harder, and yet-
  102. >Dead.
  103. >You feel your magic ebb away, and your body grows weaker.
  104. >You can’t save him.
  105. >You just can’t.
  106. >Perhaps…
  107. >You widen your reach, searching out for any form any emotions.
  108. >You catch the scent of fear and pain, and bring it to you.
  109. >It wasn’t exactly nourishing, but it contributed nonetheless.
  110. >You try harder, bringing more emotions to you.
  111. >You feel stronger, as you recharge on the gathered emotions.
  112. >Your mana is back full, and you try for the second time.
  113. >You toy around with his heart, trying to bring it back.
  114. >In a spark of anger, you fire a bolt of energy to his chest.
  115. >You recoil immediately, fearing the worst.
  116. >But there is something else.
  117. >His heart moved for a second.
  118. >You glance at your horn.
  119. >The lighting!
  120. >You concentrate on his heart again, and fire a jolt of energy.
  121. >His body jumps once.
  122. >It’s working!
  123. >You fire more and more, throwing progressively more powerful bolts.
  124. >Fire.
  125. >Again.
  126. >And again.
  127. >Again.
  128. >You pant like a tired animal, sweat trickling down your neck and head.
  129. >One more…
  130. >You know this will work.
  131. >You just-
  132. >You pause.
  133. >You’re out.
  134. >You reach out again, trying to find any more emotions.
  135. >You had little time, you just knew it.
  136. >Anything you find either quickly leaves your grasp, or fades away.
  137. >A chill runs down your spine, as you look down to Anon who might be in the same situation like them.
  138. >And then, you find it.
  139. >No fear, no pain, no agony.
  140. >Something powerful.
  141. >And it is nowhere far, very, very close.
  142. >It was from where you were.
  143. >And it was… Coming from-
  144. >Anon?
  145. >You tap into it immediately, quickly numbing away all pains and fully recharging you.
  146. >You knew this emotion.
  147. >This was… care?
  148. >You don’t recall who put it that way, but it was powerful.
  149. >And that is all you needed right now.
  150. >You focus it all into a single bolt, and bring it down on him.
  151. >His chest shakes wildly.
  152. >And then-
  153. >A beat.
  154. >And another one.
  155. >And-
  156. >You suddenly feel light headed, and you lose your balance.
  157. >You fall to the ground and look over to Anon.
  158. >Silence. Dead silence.
  159. >You were not enough.
  160. >What if-
  161. >Your vision slowly fades away, as you too, slump to the grass.
  162.
  163. >Chrysalis’ vision failed, and she fell unconscious, sobbing to the belief that her friend died.
  164. >What she didn’t know was-
  165. >Your heart simply skipped a beat.
  166.
  167. >Chrysalis woke later on, after everything burned down.
  168. >Ashes, nothing but ashes.
  169. >She quickly stood and shook it all away, until her vision fell on you.
  170. >Unmoving, unresponsive,
  171. >Dead.
  172. >Tears flew freely from her eyes, as she covered her face.
  173. >No, Anon wouldn’t want to see her like this.
  174. >But it was too much to bear.
  175. >She sat there is mourning, not wanting to face her lost friend.
  176.
  177. >And then, you coughed.
