BACKGROUND:
          baekhyeon had never had a happy childhood. his father was a stranger to the family, preferring the company of his friends rather than his family, and would often spend days departed from them. the nights he was home was filled with the crushing feeling of being harshly judged as an disappointing son, the lingering pressure of his probing fingers digging into baekhyeon's back and empty pit in his stomach when he would sigh and mutter that his son must be retarded to have his head in the clouds all day. his mother was a complete contrast, calm and quiet and made of porcelain. of course, she loved her children dearly, but always felt a stronger connection to her little girl, hosook, rather than baekhyeon, and the two spent many years fighting for their mother's love, with baekhyeon always ending up lonely.
          he was seven, his sister merely six, when she tottered off to school for the last time. she was meant to be going on a week-long school trip with her classmates to busan, and the parents expected that she made it there. they were wrong. a week later, when baekhyeon couldn't find her at the school gates and the school insisted that they assumed she had stayed at home ill instead of going, a nationwide search was prompted to find his sister, spanning for an entire four months, in which there was chaos, tears, panic and prayers from the han household. camera's following baekhyeon to school became an ordinary occurrence. his father left from stress, and after a while baekhyeon found that he couldn't even remember what his dad had looked like. then, on the 14th of november, baekhyeon heard from a concerned neighbour that his sister had been found in a river near that edge of the town, edging on some woods, and the naive boy immediately thought she was alive, instantly sprinting over to get her, but what he saw traumatised him forever.
          worse yet was the way his fragile mother coped with the news that her daughter was dead. the woman's mind was all but shattered, and many nights she would spend howling herself to sleep out of sheer anguish. often, to make her sleep baekhyeon would pretend to be hosook, and he would sit by his mother's side as her daughter until the night gave way to sleep. unfortunately, his mother became somewhat addicted to the falsity she was pretending to be true, that her daughter was alive, and the years of dressing up as her gave way to baekhyeon's confusion with his gender, and festered into somewhat of a split personality disorder. guilt ridden and consumed with a disgust at himself and the activity, but finding it as his only lifeline, he distanced himself from his peers at school emotionally, learned to lie about himself to shield the shame of his pastimes from the light. he became obsessed with death and life, pain and danger, almost to the point of a sick fantasy. his psyche was frayed at the edges, twisted and mangled, and it manifested through dark apparitions and visions of his sister at night. but still, he kept his head down and hid it all under a small smile.

summary: hosook and baekhyeon never really got along. they spent their childhood fighting for their mother's love and attention; a battle that hosook always won. baekhyeon found himself despising of his sister's natural way of outshining him in every aspect, and in many ways was bitter and resentful of her existence. this didn't stop him from resenting himself after her death, what was and what could have been. he's been shaken up because of her death for years, pursued by phantoms of the past in the form of sudden hallucinations of her corpse.

summary: they have an odd relationship, to say the least. the death of a loved one simultaneously seemed to repel and attract each other; his mother became stifling and overprotective but, at the same time, caused her to sometimes almost drift away from reality in general, as if she was a ghost in a shell. they only really bonded whenever baekhyeon would dress up as his sister for his mother's comfort, and even then their relationship was fake, to an extent.

° confused with right and wrong and black and white from his rather traumatic childhood, baekhyeon grew into a liar as he got older, unable to be honest with himself and others. trust issues was a huge part of it too, his unwillingness to open up to people because he hates himself, so why would others feel the same? he's not a pathological liar, but he's somewhere close. the side people see of baekhyeon, quiet and mildly nervous, is nothing compared to his instability underneath. he often keeps his “friends” at a distance, reluctant to share his emotions and personal information no matter how small, whether it be his backstory or birthday, and even they don't even realise they actually know next to nothing about the stranger who they claim to be their friend.

PERSONALITY:
° LIAR & LONER
a bit of a wallflower, baekhyeon finds it difficult to fully trust others, and over the years has cultivated an iron wall of lies between him and them in order to keep out his private life. secretive to begin with, after moving away from his hometown prior to his younger sister's death, baekhyeon isolates himself in such a way that he has friends, but they are nothing more than strangers to him. he prefers to spend his lunches and lesson times by himself on account of his nonsensical fear of others finding out who he is, and thus can't really bring himself to be around people in general. from a young age he learned to lie to others, and incorporating velvety half-truths into everyday conversations has become an obsessive habit, even to the point that he himself can't tell where he ends and his lies begin. even if it's a small question like the profession of his mother or father, baekhyeon will go into overdrive spinning tales about his family, in a picturesque place in which everything is okay. in truth, nobody knows a thing about him.
° SELF-LOATHING & INSECURE
self-conscious around other people, baekhyeon feels uncomfortable in his own skin, years of dressing up as his sister giving him huge gender identity issues, which make him switch from being himself to his sister whenever he needs comforting almost as if they're two souls with two separate personalities trapped in the same body. dressing as a girl is something he loathes even if he knows he can't help it, and he's often tried to 'go cold turkey’ by trashing everything feminine he owns, but he always comes crawling back. he's complicated like that, being a woman is the only thing he loves about himself, but he knows he'll be judged and he feels hates himself, thinking that he's dirty, for doing it. because of this issue he often seeks for approval from others without even knowing it, perhaps in the form of pretending to be more intelligent than he is. he doesn't think he can do anything right, and hides it with feigned intelligence.
° OBLIVIOUS & LEVELHEADED
a daydreamer at heart to cope with the incessant sadness in his life, it was his father who often called him a retard because of his son's way of spacing out. hating both himself and his life, baekhyeon often retreats into his almost psychedelic imagination (it's almost like he's taken magic mushrooms) in which he is anything, and his life is anything. his imagination has a habit of seeping black with blood and desperation in fearful times, seeping into reality in the form of scary hallucinations or the spirit of his sister, but it's just that - his imagination. it's because of his vivid imagination that the boy is largely oblivious to everything going on around him, but thankfully, he is able to snap out of it at any point (unless in a stressful situation where his imagination turns dark, in which case he just has to wait until it's over). Unless he's met with the sight of a dead body, which will resurface bad memories, even the sight of horrific gore won't unnerve him, and he has a knack for staying eerily calm in such situations, giving him the ability to nurse the others back to a comfortable medium after the shock.
° PARANOID & SICK
speaking of his nerve even at the sight of gore, baekhyeon, despite what people may think initially, is quite twisted. most of the time he's laid-back, even scarily chill, but in the rare moments where he explodes, his sick nature will kick in. he might not be able to stomach death but he’s a master at gore, and gouging out eyes and cutting off fingers of those who have wronged him is always his favourite pastime. he has switches of paranoia, and although often indifferent to the survival of anyone in the group, these sudden bouts of craziness will often lead him to hunt down parade in fear of his safety, enabling him to go from chill to possessive in a matter of seconds. he won't rest until he's found the boy alive and well, and to anyone or anything which has injured him, they'd better watch out. he's a strategist, and a big one. his obsession with death, life and pain is almost scary, borderline masochistic, and the thought of coming so close to decimation in the form of death is thrilling for him, because it both excites him and scares him horrifically.
° RESILIENT & DETERMINED
for all of his negative traits, one can't say that baekhyeon isn't a quick and creative thinker when his life is at stake. the boy's resilience knows no end, able to surpass everything life throws and grow stronger because of it, and his determination to get things done is almost like ocd. he won't rest until the goals he has promised himself have been achieved, and this is a crucial trait to have in bad situations. he's good with his hands and can make practically anything, but you better not mess up his plans or touch his stuff when he has them, because he can be as territorial as a grizzly bear. a self-conscious introvert who hides behind a extrovert’s mask, his pride often stops him from asking for help.
° WITTY & SARCASTIC
everyone knows that baekhyeon is a pain in the ass. he can be very argumentative when he wants to be, just for the sake of the devil's advocate, but his poised wit and sarcasm is unparalleled. he often uses it as a mask for his emotions and fear, but baekhyeon can be surprisingly funny when he wants to be, every now and then cracking snide comments that leave the people within hearing range cackling, whether they be aimed at others or himself (he's known to be self-deprecating).

+ WHAT'S IN YOUR CHARACTER'S BAG?:
° girl’s hair pin (adorned with a small white and pink plastic flower); one of the only remnants of hosook that baekhyeon has seen following the bricking up of his sister's old room for preservation. he found it underneath the sofa a year after her disappearance. it has a lot of sentimental value.
° notebook with the phrase 'help me’ scrawled in shaky, nonsensical writing all over the pages; he's had the notebook, which was a gift from his estranged aunt, for years, old and battered. the first few pages are dated back to him at seven years old, detailing his life like a diary. then the page marked on the day his sister disappeared is blank (aside from an attempt at an entry, saying “she's g—”) with only the date written on it. the rest of the pages are scrawled with the desperate markings of a madman, 'help me’ written over and over and over, overlapping each other so much that some pages are nearly black with ink and torn from the pressure of the pen.
° small makeup bag containing only a lighter and a single ruby red lipstick which is almost worn down to a stump, and a tattered old red dress wrapped hastily in plastic bags and completely covered in tape; he hates the shame of being in 'drag’, hence strictly prohibiting himself from opening the strange parcel via the duct tape— or at least making it very difficult to— and prior to wrapping them up had set fire to the dress in an attempt to 'burn away his sins’, but had instantly injured his hands trying to desperately salvage the garment from the flames.
° small roll of medical bindings and pain relief ointment; he sometimes has to treat his burned hands at school when they begin to ache. however, in fear of people somehow finding out about the gender issues that led to him accidentally burning himself, he often hides in the bathroom to treat himself, and shields his hands with grey cotton gloves.
° bottle of blue ink and a bundle of blunt pencils; blue was his favourite colour, so he couldn't resist stealing it from a nearby shop. it has been carefully placed in a tiny black box cushioned with tissue paper. the pencils are run down with use, most worn to the wood, but all of them have teeth marks on them.
° strange, foreign book; a book he checked out of the school library. it’s written in french, a language he was forced by his mother to learn at least the basics of because of his grandfather, who lived in france for a great deal of his life (you told me I could keep this vague because you had an idea you could use for it. feel free to change the language so something more spoopy like latin, or change where she got it from).

° is your character the type to be ready for anything?
it depends on what it is. he's never intentionally ready for anything life might hurl in his direction, but sometimes his dumb luck will save him from a horrible situation. he has a level head though, and, enjoying puzzles and other such activities has taught him to analyse the circumstance closely for an answer when in a sticky situation.
° is your character careless, and not likely to plan ahead?
it depends. baekhyeon often finds himself retreating into his own head to imagine various scenarios and conversations between him and his peers instead of approaching them directly, and thus is less grounded in reality. that being said, he's surprisingly alert and perceptive at times (of people around him more so than his stagnant surroundings), and this can be crucial in moments when somebody is seconds away from going batshit crazy.
° is your character more fashion conscious than practical?
even if when he 'transforms’ into ‘hosook’ he becomes an almost completely different person, the two personalities share some traits. neither have a good taste in fashion, and sometimes baekhyeon's dress choice can be detrimental to your health, your eyes in particular. that being said, he has a tendency to forget his jacket or coat at home, and almost always when faced with adverse weather.
° or does your character know more than what others may think? when his head is in the game no one can deny that baekhyeon isn't a scary adversary. despite his shockingly bad way of articulating his points and tendency to lie badly in an attempt to salvage his pride, people actually underestimate him, and he will have the skill to observe others and pick up on whispered gossip about them. he's not as oblivious as he has built his reputation to be.

+ WHAT EXCITES THEM / GETS THEIR ADRENALINE GOING?:
death, or near-death situations have a strange effect on the boy. baekhyeon has had an (almost twisted) infatuation with the idea of death ever since his sister's passing. the prospect of barely surviving a battle with death has chills running up his spine in a sense of sick euphoria, but he knows the poison is dangerous to touch, and thus fears it. he's stuck eternally in a limbo of trauma and desperately drowning as he struggles to deal with it, hence the divided view on death.

+ WHAT MAKES THEM FEEL VULNERABLE?:
people seeing him dressed as/in the mindset of a girl makes baekhyeon feel incredibly vulnerable. To him it's something that brings the utmost shame, but still is the only thing that is seeking to keep him sane. expressing his passions is a huge fear as he's so used to being teased for them, and the fear of rejection (something he felt a lot while his sister was alive) is forever present at the back of his mind. he doesn't like being around people because merely their presence brings all of these emotions bubbling out of him, and he's uncomfortable, not because of them, but because of himself.

+ WHAT MAKES THEM ANGRY?:
baekhyeon is not easily angered, malicious, yes, but it takes a lot of effort to make him rage. being cornered or confronted by other people, both metaphorically and literally always gets him though. there's something about feeling trapped and stifled, that drives his brain into a dark place, and it is very, very likely that baekhyeon will physically lash out with venom, perhaps even to the point of seriously injuring someone, or worse.

+ WHAT'S THEIR BIGGEST FEAR ( WHY? ):
baekhyeon is a complicated person; seeing his sister's body sparked something within him, an incredible fear of dying and ending up the same way she had been, but simultaneously it still excites him. death is something that will never not cause goosebumps to rise on his arms like the dead, but whether or not the cause is pleasure or terror is something that not even he can draw a clear line between.

+ WHEN DO THEY FEEL MOST AT EASE?
to his absolute disgust, baekhyeon has been somewhat indoctrinated since the incident to associate the emotion of comfort with the image of women's clothing and the uncomfortable feeling of heels under his feet, which is why his go-to reaction is to revert back into being hosook. whenever he repressed this urge he can tend to be a lot more open to negative feelings like anger, paranoia and unease.

WHAT IS THEIR WORST MEMORY?
he was seven, too naive and young and innocent to realise that hope was dead from the moment he heard the murmurous whispers of the shadowed crowd. from the moment he saw the dusky headlights of the police car against the backdrop of a chilly autumn evening that reeked of change. 9:43pm and he was sprinting through the choked woods, tripping over fallen branches and brown leaves and the gathering crowd of strangers surrounding the edge of the woods. but it was faith that propelled him forward, false faith from the eavesdropped gossip of the neighbours that they had found his sister, missing for four months, in the river by the town forest. he had broken through the clearing, dodging the scrambling hands of the crowd as they tried to pull him back, rolled under the police tape and froze. stared.

they lied. they hadn't found his sister. that couldn't be his sister. his little sister was alive. alive. not dead. never dead. his little sister has long black hair and a pretty little face and a red dress she wouldn't stop talking about. the creature in front of him was twisted and blackened with river mud, legs shattered and painstakingly thin. her long hair, sopping wet, was tangled animalistically, matted with roots and fallen leaves. her half-face was grey and purple, dappled like art and teeming with an infestation of fat black flies, water-bloated cheeks and yellow eyes wide and unseeing, and her beautiful red dress— the red dress she treasured— was shredded, exposing her caved ribcage and rotting flesh. hysteria. a policeman had grabbed him roughly, dragging him away from the carnage, but behind his eyes the image seeded itself into his memory. he was faintly aware of someone screaming a high pitched, wrenching, feral scream, and he realised with a jolt that it was him. and all he could think was that the sun had never felt so cold.

they have a strange relationship. parade actually spotted baekhyeon dressed as his sister a couple of years ago. parade had been being chased by something/someone when he crashed into baekhyeon’s garden as he was stringing out the clothes to dry in his dress. the two stared at each other for five, silent seconds, a strange tension in place, before parade remembered he was being chased and hurdled into the next garden. out of crippling shame of the incident, baekhyeon finds the boy intolerable, but is simultaneously drawn to him in ways completely alien to him (it isn't a sexual love, just obsessive). he can completely disregard parade, spending long periods of time away from him without thinking of him, but eventually paranoia about what he's doing will creep up on him, and he won't rest until he finds parade again. when around him he constantly flits between complete disinterest, his enemy, and his borderline stalker, and little does he know how this interest could easily morph into creepy obsession. [note: he doesn't love him, he just feels a weird connection to him because parade has saw him at his most vulnerable, as hosook.]

HOW FAR WOULD THEY GO IN ORDER TO WIN THEM OVER?
° “you make me feel weird. i hate it. i hate you.”
° he isn't afraid of emotional manipulation; he severely injures someone who parade holds close to him, blames it on another person who parade is close to (thus putting them against each other and isolating parade even further) and then swoops in in the aftermath to console parade, earning a bit of his trust.
° baekhyeon attempts to drop something extremely heavy, eh a huge suitcase, over the end of a bannister and onto someone who had been getting close with parade earlier. luckily, another person calls their name and they step to the side before it hits them.
° if parade ever acknowledges his obsession and doesn't approve of it baekhyeon would be confused about why not, and go into a rage in which he attempts to kill parade.
° he isn't afraid of mutilating; he slaughters a cat that hissed at parade a week previous and hides it in a stockroom cupboard or something like that. later on someone will open it and the dead cat falls out. “i have absolutely no idea how that got there.”
° he isn't afraid of putting himself at risk to please the l/i; parade is extremely angry and baekhyeon purposefully gets into a fight with him so that parade can blow off his stress by beating him to a pulp. it literally ends with baekhyeon shouting at him through the pain of coughing up a bit of blood to kick him harder and harder, and eventually ends with him breathing really heavily in a fetal position on the ground before he looks up at parade, smiles a bloody grin and croaks “do you feel better now?” [note: i just realised how fucking twisted and freaky this is, honestly,,, it wasn't meant to be kinky AT ALL but it ended up going that way sorry not sorry]

HOW WOULD THEY REACT TO ANYONE ELSE TRYING TO WIN THEM OVER?
needless to say, it wouldn't go down well. it's not like baekhyun wouldn't realise his emotions after a while, but he would just try to repress them. ignore the feeling. pray whatever it was, it would leave. however, like all things, the pressure that comes with being confined will eventually burst forth in a catharsis of blinding emotion, and there's really no telling what would happen. one thing can be sure though, baekhyeon would never kill anyone (don't get him wrong,he's not completely without manners, after all), but disfigurements like blinding people, or hacking off tongues, fingers and ears is always a start.



黒ずんだ野望 BLACK and DEEP DESIRES

HABITS:
° Speech Habits
° baekhyeon is verbally clumsy. he’s constantly speaking faster than his brain can form words, so he often stops in the middle of a sentence to recollect himself, or stumbles over words. because of his ineloquent way of speaking, he's easily dismissable and somewhat of an underdog.
° says “i thought so” a lot, even when he clearly didn't.
° has a potty mouth, and will often cuss under his breath. “pisshead”, “shit” and “well, fuck me sideways” are his favourites.
° Physical Habits
° biting his nails, both offhandedly and when he's nervous. they're already all bitten down to the skin, but that might not register in a nerve-wracking situation, and he has often drew blood.
° avoiding eye contact at all times.
° engaging in superstitious beliefs. he often consults horoscopes, hates black cats, never walks under ladders and often throws salt over his shoulder to keep the devil away.

HOW EFFICIENT ARE THEY WITH:
+ PHYSICAL STRENGTH? baekhyeon might look like a wet noodle, but he can definitely hold his own in a fight. although he doesn't have any fighting training, sheer adrenaline and excitement is what propels his fists to hit their target with scary accuracy each time, delivering devastating blows on his opponents. he's far stronger than he looks, and to underestimate his raw power is ill advised.

+ MENTAL STRENGTH? baekhyeon is either one extreme or the other, with absolutely no in-between, so it's difficult to say where his mental strength lies on the spectrum. he's calm under pressure and finds it scarily easy to reign in his emotions when something is supposed to emotionally affect him (instead using sarcasm and poised wit as an emotional outlet), but also able to completely lose it when his sanity is threatened via seeing death or having the things he obsesses over ripped away from him. the flip change is just one way of determining that baekhyeon is unstable, and in a big way. people deal with trauma in different ways, and baekhyeon is just another example if something gone horrifically wrong.

+ PAIN / BLOOD? baekhyeon can handle a lot more pain than the average person (and is almost masochistic when it comes down to it), and blood is something he's strangely comfortable with seeing, considering how much he freaks out at dead bodies. he has a way of blanking out things that could potentially disturb his mind such as blood and violence, but seeing a corpse will easily enough rattle anyone.

+ DEATH? not very good at all. seeing dead bodies sends him into a frenzy, like a cornered animal, lashing out at anyone and anything. they leave him with memories about seeing his sister's body. his chances of hallucinating increases, and he can be very dangerous to both himself and others.

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER:

why is SKYFALL oblivious yet acts smart?
His father constantly reprimanded him for always having his head in the clouds and consistently labelled him as stupid or retarded due to this. This left a slight psychological scar on him; he often used his imagination as a means of escapism, but desperately values intelligence. In his mind he is an idiot, and tries to act smarter than he is to make up for it. Unfortunately it has the opposite effect.


帳の陰 BEHIND THE CURTAIN

final notes: baekhyeon always wears the hairpin, whether it be in his hair or on the sleeve of his uniform. also,when baekhyeon “becomes hosook”, his entire personality switches into one of a six year old child. he isn't always aware that he is not actually hosook, and will often refer to himself (baekhyeon) as “big brother”.
