- {What have you got for me?}
- Looking for something exotic? I may just have it.
- {Could you train me to be better with the sword?}
- We can take a crack at it - have to warn you though, I won't repeat a technique twice, so make sure you're alert.
- You've invaded my little kingdom, one could construe your effort as an act of war.
- {Kingdom? It's not good to hold yourself to such low standards.}
- Yet it's prudent for any man to make do with what he has - and I'm more than content with this little plot of land.
- Come, pray tell, what brings you here?
- {Was dealing with your thieving friends up the river, so I had to make sure there wasn't any loose ends.}
- Hey, what did they tell you about stereotypes!
- {That they're always true.}
- Ha! You'll go far in this world, no one who deals with blood can spare time for outliers - in this world fraught with peril, it's best to stick with your gut.
- Yet I'm sorry to disappoint, but those redguards you've seen were the very same who discarded me, like a scurvy whore-son, to have me live my days here.
- Can't say I was too fussed, that commander held a different philosophy than I, unfortunately his men suffered the same antipathy for reason.
- {What was the reason for you being cast overboard?}
- I'll spare you the history of it; I wanted to direct our efforts to other vessels on the high sea, yet the one who steered us had his sights on land.
- I implored him to reconsider, to understand that we are not land dogs and never will be - that any endeavor away from the waters will lead to our slaughter.
- {And you were right, the people of the reach had slain them to the last man.}
- If it were only the commander, then I would drink to the reachmen's achievement, alas there were boys there whose only folly was ambition and wonder.
- Though they threw me over the deck, I understood their need for stability. Many coming from shattered homes and looking for that comradery that was sorely lacking in Dragonstar.
- {What was Dragonstar like?}
- A city in strife, split down the middle like a hyeena to my blade - with sun-haired Nords to the east and us Night-haired Reds to the west. To say it's tense would be an understatement.
- Though despite the dregs, the city itself boasts stone craftsmanship that those north could never deign to imagine. Bronze towers, golden observatories and baths that run on to the horizon.
- Those this spectacle comes with the caveat, and if you're the inquisitive sort then you'd have already deduced what it is.
- {Only the rich are allowed these vices, right?}
- Mustered all that mental might for that conclusion, aye? Just like any cluster of man that boasts a hefty number - there will always be heirachy.
- Despite the schism that divides the city, both through ideas and stone - the heirachy has found someone to place at the top.
- Daener-Khan, blood of the crowns. He and his lineage could crush those boisterous nords in a day - yet he enjoys the labor and division that the stratification provides.
- If us impoverished redguards keep our sights on those impoverished nords, blade in hand - then it'll leave us no time to look above, at those who truly move the world.
- {So why stay here? Never made any attempts to return?}
- Return where? Dragonstar? Ha, nothing buta cramped, dusky hovel in a reeking slum awaits me there. Besides, I enjoy the cold up north, somewhat - welcome change to that relentless southern sun which greets you every waking hour.
- And I had any curiosity, recently piqued which is yet to be sated. A black creature, flying overhead with wings as wide as the river.
- Seen anything like that?
- {I did see a griffon when I first traveled to the reach.}
- Ah yes, that's what they got to calling it. Sly devil, it'll be anything you want it to be under to condition of food and spoils.
- {So it's not a griffon? What is it then?}
- No one really knows, there was a mad sheikh holed up in his secluded palace, right in the middle of the desert.
- Tales of sacrifice and the like, just the usual for any decadent royal that's cursed with bastard blood. Though these tales were something strange.
- Not just any eccentric rite, this sheikh had a purpose, trying to turn his vulture into a parakeet. A childhood pet who he could finally talk to.
- So he sentenced many a innocent life to invoke some primordial force to appease his desire. 'Pparently it worked, yet as always in this world, not as he intended.
- {What did this creature do? Is this myth or history?}
- You know how word of mouth goes, after the story bounces off enough lips it's bound to lose any legitimacy it once had.
- Back on point, this creature had become gluttonous, a rapacious spawn whose only priority was to consume and be worshipped. It learend all too well from its owner it seemed.
- Devouring the eunuchs and the harem, it turned its sights on the owner - and then spoke, with the most commanding sound that demanded submission. The sheikh obeyed and festooned the beast with the finest gold and fed him the finest meat.
- Until eventually the sheikh had emptied his coffers in his attempts to appease the demon, and his fate which was long portented, had came.
- {So this Griffon is that very beast?}
- From what I've heard, it certainly sounds like it - yet take that tale with a grain of salt, the heat makes many men become the most fantastical weavers of tales. Sanity is secondary.
- Another thing to note, just because the beast hailed from hammerfell, doesn't mean it's anchored to its culture and tongue. This beast is smart and will adopt any custom it comes across in short time.
- Probably the most perfect parasite to have ever been conceived, save for those scurvy cowards who dumped me here that is.
- {I'll be on my guard around it, maybe tell the Kingdom about its true nature too.}
- Oh, no, best abandon that idea quickly if you want to keep your head. Those fools up north worship that beast, your warning would be nothing short of heresy.
- My advice? Do what I do, lay low, don't get involved and let them get on with their lives, no matter how misguided. Once you get invested in people, their pain is your pain.
