- My five forever cans: Sennheiser HD600, Audeze Maxwell Wireless, Beyerdynamic DDT70 Pro 80ohm, Meze Elite, and a Sony WX-1000XM5 set modified so active noise cancelling still works even when wired.
- But I'd probably replace that Sony with a cobbled-together planar-magnetic one-off that has both ANC and integrated internal music player. It’s technically feasible with silicon-carbon batteries, and components like UFS NAND, microSD slots, and higher-quality DACs could fit behind the earpads in a compact package. Imagine something with the footprint of an AirPods Max but featuring a clickwheel on each earpad. The headband would include a hidden boom mic like the one on the Sony Pulse Elite, but when connected via USB-C, it would function as a proper microphone without losing ANC. Then when the battery goes completely flat, simply open up the earpads, take out the battery puck-cells, then put it back together. Now you still have a normal set of dumb cans. It's gonna be heavy so much of it needs to be made of carbon to not be burdensome, and battery life's gonna be nothing to write home about if you have everything on, but I think it's workable.
