  1. He hadn’t seen her in ages. He had thrown himself into his work, into his study of Runes in order to keep his mind off of it. The constant writing and understanding of the esoteric symbols kept the gears whirring and the connections being drawn far away from him. But every once in awhile, his pendant would be caught in his peripheral vision, and when he opened it, he couldn’t help but remember and it stung him every time. And every time he would throw himself deeper into his work.

  3. It seemed like an eternity. Another year without her as he stared at that pendant. He wondered how many times she had looked at hers, and thought of him. He breathed a sigh. Most likely much less, she seemed much less clung to him than he was to her. But he still smiled. He continued happily on with his work.

  5. He had taken a small look at that lens that Stella had made. But it had been a complex structure, and he was unable to replicate it. Instead, he had to settle for a crude prototype. A kind of glass with runes carved into it. It did what it was supposed to do. It allowed him to see the outline of the mana circuits of those that he was experimenting on. It seemed like it would do well enough. And then runes kept coming.

  7. He was now experimenting with soul runes now that he could see how they worked. It was horrific. They swerved. They suffered. They screamed as the soul was torn from them. As the runes were placed into their soul. It would need further study. It would need further understanding. But the screams could no longer mask his longing. He was, despite all the others, fundamentally alone. It was only a matter of time until the longing broke into absolute desperation.
