- [20:06:42] <Charybdizs> <Jellybones> charbydizs, what do you think of open relationships
- [20:06:44] <Charybdizs> heh why
- [20:07:01] <Jellybones> well, I'd like to know what you think first
- [20:07:05] <Jellybones> I'm not in one or anything
- [20:07:15] <Jellybones> i'm c-certainly not inviting you to join o-one either
- [20:09:49] <Charybdizs> clarify what you mean by open relationships btw
- [20:10:43] <Jellybones> in which the people in the relationship have a mutual agreement to see other people romantically and sexually
- [20:11:53] <Charybdizs> well...
- [20:13:07] <Charybdizs> I can't really give an answer to that without bringing some religion into the issue as marriage is a religious concept, but I'll do my best to put it in layman's terms, as I've thought about that a lot
- [20:15:44] <Charybdizs> In Christianity, the ultimate goal is for humanity to be reconciled with each other, and live in harmony among each other and with the creator. Marriage, the contract of a husband and wife to stick it through, be initimate, and raise a family, is a construct which exists not only to propagate the species, but to give us a better understanding of ou
- [20:15:44] <Charybdizs> r relationship to Christ.
- [20:16:11] <Charybdizs> In scripture, the church (the people of the earth) is often portrayed as a bride, and Christ as the groom
- [20:17:35] <Charybdizs> this is because the relationship of husband to wife is a pretty direct parallel. God created humanity in order to love and be loved, and to create a beautiful world with us. Sort of like, he gives us the earth, we make it beautiful.
- [20:18:10] <Charybdizs> that's reflected in the way a husband provides for a family, so that the wife can use those resources to grow everyone and make a beautiful home
- [20:18:31] <Charybdizs> and also in the way a husband gives the wife sperm, and she gives birth to a baby
- [20:18:35] <Charybdizs> therefore...
- [20:19:55] <Charybdizs> Marriage all works together to teach us more about ourselves and our place in the universe, and provides a stable structure for which new generations to be brought forth in relative security
- [20:21:27] <Charybdizs> open marriage, homosexuality, prostitution, polygamy, any sort of thing like that, they're usually going to do a worse job at that (or not a job at all in some cases) than a "normal" marriage would.
- [20:21:31] <Charybdizs> That's not to say that like
- [20:22:14] <Charybdizs> someone in a polygamous relationship wouldn't learn any of those things. On the contrary, they might learn a lot, but it's a much more easily corrupted and infeasible structure for general society to live by
- [20:23:14] <Charybdizs> so in short, no, I don't believe open relationships are good, because in addition to opening up a lot of societal problems, they also don't function as quite as good of a framework of growth
- [20:24:19] <Jellybones> oh
- [20:24:39] <Charybdizs> (I should note that in scripture polygamy was forbidden for exactly that reason: because it became less about growth and family and more about collecting wives and shit, not to mention shortage of girls)
- [20:24:50] <Charybdizs> lol
- [20:25:14] <Jellybones> well, i can't say I'm religious, but the input counts
- [20:25:30] <Charybdizs> yeah
- [20:25:49] <Charybdizs> there's definitely religious and societal reasons for it
- [20:26:57] <Charybdizs> you always have to remember even in a secular society: just because something TECHNICALLY isn't wrong, doesn't mean it won't have high abuse potential if it becomes lauded and commonplace
- [20:27:48] <Charybdizs> lax divorce policies is a great example of this throughout history
- [20:28:10] <Charybdizs> funny cause I was just reading about henry the VIII before my test today
