"From the Ether to the Ethereal"¹

I.

Pumping in my blood,

Coursing through my veins,

I feel it in the deep heart’s core,

I feel it, I feel it.

II.

He is slouched, huddled

Over his trinkets,

Simple devices.

He hopes he will find it,

But he thinks he will find it,

Full confidence in his

Naked, caveman eyeball.

He’s going to find it.

He must.

He does not feel it.

III.

The air inebriates me;

I feel my countless cells,

Millions upon millions,

In harmonious solidarity,

Pure unison,

Respirating, respirating,

My breath, an aggregation.

I feel it.

IV.

Isolated, alone,

Dark laboratory,

Glistening, strained wrinkles,

Scars of immense

Determination, concentration, and ambition,

Foggy goggles.

One day he will find it,

The answer,

The solution,

It.

He knows he will find it.

He does not feel it.

V.

I witness and feel.

I experience being,

Being a part of a grander system.

I see trees and smile at them.

I see them ejecting

The air I breath,

Spewing it out

Like volcanoes,

And absorbing my breath,

Consuming it like fuel,

The entire system cycling through itself.

I close my eyes.

I feel it.

VI.

That manic gleam,

He thinks he’s close,

He knows he’s close,

He knows, he knows

He can know

All the answers,

All the truth.

He continues

Calculating, measuring,

Observing, considering,

Processing.

Computing.

This is his life.

He thinks he will know it.

He cannot feel it.

VII.

I gaze at the stars and the sky,

Mesmerized by their elegance,

By the infinite chaos of time and space.

So miniscule, so fleeting am I

In this universe, but so deep

Is my connection with it.

I feel it, Oh! I feel it!

VIII.

I hope that one day,

we might all move

From the ether to the ethereal,

So that we may all,

Together,

Feel it.

1. The “ether” was the supposed medium that filled the void of empty space through which light waves traveled; Albert A. Michelson and Edward W. Morley detected no such medium in their famous 1887 experiment, and it is the general consensus among the scientific community in the 21st century that the nothing like the ether exists.
