Appearance: At first glance, he cuts an intimidating profile, big and broad especially around the chest and arms. Once you get past the huge stature, it's easy to take note of the strong jaw, dark almond-shaped eyes, mussed hair, and wide mouth that's often given to smiling. With his long limbs, he often seems like he's not entirely at home in his own body, as if his height somehow crept up on him without him noticing. He looms, but apologetically. After a misguided experiment in his 3rd year, he's got a number of runes tattooed on his arms, chest, and back that assist in stabilizing his magic, and because of this, he tends to favor long sleeves even in the summer.
Personality: If you were to sum him up in two words, it would be "chronically responsible." Mads is the universe's mother hen and finds himself constantly cleaning up after everybody else's disaster messes, leaving him little time to ever look after himself. While he's not exactly the natural-born charismatic go-getting leader type to begin with, he often finds himself in the position anyway out of sheer necessity since nobody wants to take on hard jobs that require their fair share of work, so he's resigned himself to being the one reigning everybody else in. His nature gets the better of him when he ends up meddling into other people's affairs, whether his input is wanted or not. He sometimes thinks he knows better than others to the point of forgetting to be considerate of their feelings (always unintentionally and following profuse apologies once it's pointed out to him, though.) Maddox is very emotionally intelligent and loves people, always trying to see the best in everybody, but this can lead to him overlooking the bad and blaming himself when he misses obvious warning signs that someone is up to no good.
History: Originally a Japanese adoptee into a family of English Muggles, Maddox has often felt cut off from his culture and his original biological family, with no idea of which metaphorical box he fit into as a child. His family was extremely loving to him growing up, but all the love in the world couldn't quite help him shake the feeling of "otherness" he felt whenever the difference was pointed out by his young peers. It's this sense of distance from his own communities that helped shape his personality into somebody that strives to be helpful to a fault, and why he tries so hard to be well-liked by everybody. Maddox had no way of knowing that this separation from his peers wasn't only for his family circumstances, but also due to his magical origins.
When the time came for him to learn of his heritage as a wizard and apply to Hogwarts, he was also offered the opportunity to attend Japan's school of magic, Mahoutokoro, and to reconnect with his roots. If he chose to, he could learn more of his blood family's history, but rather than separate from his adoptive family, he instead chose to stay close to the only home he's ever known. This turned out to be the better choice, as he flourished at Hogwarts and made it all the way to his final year.
Other notes: He has a hazel wand with unicorn hair, twelve inches, fairly flexible. His patronus is a German Shepherd, and he's a dog person in more ways than one. (Awoo!) His favorite classes include transfiguration and astronomy, and while he contemplated trying out for Quidditch at one point, he found he couldn't commit the time along with the rest of his responsibilities and got cold feet halfway through.
