- As Adrian returns back to his town, he decides to head up to the manor. Outside, the Ex-Governess Muiri is carrying various bags over to a small wagon, absorbed in her work and struggling to move everything.
- Adrian: "Muiri. I'd like to speak to you."
- Muiri looks up at Adrian in surprise, dropping a bag.
- Muiri: "Oh... have you come to gloat? See the poor defeated former Governess run away with her tail between her legs?"
- Adrian: "...No, I did not. Furthermore, I should like to point out that I did not, in fact, require you to leave."
- Muiri: "With the way the town thinks of me... I would not take my chances as a normal person here."
- Adrian: "I suppose I cannot disagree with that assessment."
- "Regardless. I just wanted to ask you a few questions... ones I suspect I should have asked before."
- Muiri: "...yes?"
- Muiri throws the bags in her wagon, sitting on the edge of it.
- Adrian: "Well, for instance, what happened regarding young Albion. You can't tell me you wouldn't have been able to afford to hire someone."
- Muiri: "It's... no one wanted to be hired."
- Adrian: "You made that many enemies?"
- Muiri: "I wasn't popular after my husband passed. People even accused me of his murder."
- Adrian: "Was there any particular reason why they might think to make such an accusation?"
- Muiri: "I was a rather sudden arrival to the place. We had only been courting for a few months, but... we were older, and did not have much company besides each other."
- Adrian: "I suppose that does explain a lot. You really had no idea what you were doing, did you?"
- Muiri: "Someone who suddenly comes into a marriage like that, only to have her husband die... people called me a black widow."
- Muiri looks down.
- Muiri: "I... did not. I started getting scared. I didn't know what I was meant to do with all this sudden wealth and power."
- "All I felt I could was board myself up in the place and do what I could."
- Adrian: "It's never truly as much wealth or power as it might appear. There are narrow lines to tread, ones it seems you ran past before you even knew to look."
- "I suppose perhaps I was too hard on you. I have no intention to restore your position, and you are right; your safety cannot easily be assured. Nonetheless, what is it you plan to do now?"
- Muiri: "I... I don't know."
- "I... wasn't a very pleasant person. I just didn't want to lose what I considered safety."
- Adrian: "I would offer my assistance, but I can't claim there's much I can do to help."
- Muiri: "I'm not sure where I would go."
- Adrian: "Hm. You have nowhere at all to go?"
- Muiri: "My family live far in the southeast, in Jurtal. I can't make it back through the jungle on my own."
- Adrian: "What would you need in order to return there?"
- Muiri: "...protection."
- "The Kharlil Jungle is... incredibly deadly."
- Adrian: "...it's quite far out of the way, and I doubt just sending one or two guards with you would suffice."
- Muiri: "It... may not. I may have to find some sort of job in another town I am not known in to get enough money."
- Adrian: "I wish you safe travels, then."
- Muiri: "...yes."
- Adrian: "Were circumstances better, I would offer more assistance, but there is little I can do here."
- Muiri: "I... understand."
- "Anything else you want to say, or may I continue packing?"
- Adrian: "...Jurtal. That is some distance to the south of here, yes?"
- Muiri: "It is in Eribe."
- Adrian: "That seems it would only add to the danger of traveling there."
- Muiri: "...It would, but I have few other options."
- Adrian: "And you cannot afford to hire a few sellswords once you leave town, is that so?"
- Muiri: "Due to the danger... and the fact it is going into Eribe, what little I have may not be enough."
- Adrian sits down on the edge of the wagon and takes a leather-bound notebook from his bag, wincing before scrawling a few notes left-handed.
- Adrian: "That, I probably could assist with... in exchange for your help."
- Muiri: "Anything."
- Adrian: "Word from Eribe is hard to come by. Assuming you had a means of contacting me, which you will, how easily could you keep your eyes and ears open and let me know of anything particularly interesting?"
- Muiri: "I always do, anyway."
- "...I can do this."
- Adrian: "Splendid. And I can trust to your discretion, can't I?"
- Muiri: "Of course. I don't have the charisma of others, but I associate with the correct people."
- Adrian counts out a few stacks of gold pieces, passing a small bag to the woman.
- Adrian: "This should be enough, I hope?"
- Muiri eye's widen a little, pocketing the money in her bag.
- Muiri: "Indeed, Milord. It will be quite enough."
- Adrian: "I'm glad to hear it. Loyalty is not something I wish to underestimate."
- "If that's all, I do wish you the best of luck on the trip. I would offer my help packing, but I'm not in the best shape to do so myself, and I do believe that two of my retainers would not be very amicable company for you."
- Muiri: "What has happened to your arm? You may want to see the apothecary about that, he's one of the people who would be happy to see anyone, even me."
- Adrian: "I had to look into what drove the raiders out here. There was, in fact, a bigger fish. It's gone now."
- Muiri: "A fish big enough to stop your arm working? That is worrying... still thank you, I'm sure I will be hearing from you soon."
- Adrian: "You will. And it is worrying; all the more reason I want to look into the matter further. Thank you for your help, Lady Emery."
- Adrian leaves for the manor, looking for the Apothecary to get his curious problem analysed.
