- https://books.google.com/ngrams/ - To check how common different words and phrases are in English books.
- http://corpus.byu.edu/ - This can also give information about the frequency of words, both in modern English and historical English, as well as Spanish and Portuguese
- ---
- http://www.phrasemix.com/collections/the-50-most-important-english-proverbs - Common sayings/proverbs in English.
- Something to notice about these is that proverbs in two parts (with a comma in the middle) are often shortened to just the first part. We say, “When in Rome,” to mean “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” (When visiting a new place, follow the customs of that place even if they’re different from your own.)
- “Speak of the devil,” is short for “Speak of the devil, and he doth appear,” meaning that if you talk about someone, then they will show up. Many people say the first half without knowing the second half, and without knowing why it has this meaning.
- ---
- “The grass is always greener, but a bird in the hand…”
- (When we combine idioms like this, it can sometimes be a mixed metaphor.)
- ---
- http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/proverbs.html - A much longer list, with explanations of the meanings of some of them.
- ---
- http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=1024 - What languages are “incomprehensible”, as in the expression, “That’s Greek to me,” meaning I have no idea what you’re talking about.

- BREAK

- Module 1 starts at 12:40, Module 2 starts at 13:50.
- Check the schedule for “next week” (tomorrow) to see your class for today.

- DELTA p. 458-461 - Homework speaking tasks.
- Independent speaking - Include two reasons for your opinion, and give details or examples that explain how that reason leads to your choice.
- Question 3 - The DELTA book doesn’t include it, but you need to briefly summarize the announcement before you start explaining the person’s opinion and reasons for it.
- Use transitions like “One reason is” to make your organization as clear as possible.
- Question 4 - You should also first summarize the idea of this reading, before explaining how the professor’s example illustrates it.
- ---
- The lecture for question 6 is an example of using “he” and “his” for an indeterminate person (in this case the baby).
- Probably in this situation you should use plurals and “they” instead.
- ---
- https://www.ets.org/Media/Tests/TOEFL/pdf/ibt_writing_sample_responses.pdf - Sample responses with scores for both integrated and independent writing. Notice how short the introduction and conclusion are in the first level 4 independent response, and that there are only two supporting reasons.
