  2. /startunratedhunt WarriorGallade | His flight from earlier now being delayed, your brother asks if he can spend the night over, to which you gladly oblige. Picking up the large crate of game consoles and Pokemon games, you resume your earlier pastimes. Given the large amount of time you've got to expend, the two of you decide to undertake a strange challenge. Both of you have a single copy of Black 2 and White 2 each, you're using two DSi systems and him using two 3DS systems. The challenge is to fill out as much as the Unova regional Pokedex as possible, without obtaining any badges or claiming Mystery Gift but anything else is fair game, including using other games (besides the two) as long as you don't trade with them. Wondering what that last restriction was about, you accept the challenge, however no matter how optimally you played, your brother ended the challenge with more Pokemon than you! What game did he use that was responsible for such a difference? | dream radar; pokemon dream radar | "Call my 3DS choice a bit biased, but I did suggest that challenge knowing full well I'd win with it. After all, you should've picked up on that much sooner", he smirks. "Tell you what. If you can identify this item for me right here, I'll call it even. Came across it during that challenge just now." Bringing up his screen, you see this image: https://imgur.com/a/3eG6N5C. What item was he talking about? | dream ball | "Well, knowing the Dream Ball means you should've seen that coming ages ago. In any case, I remembered something neat about the prequels, Black and White. It's been so long since we played them together and nearly did everything there was to do; mind checking something for me?" he asks, as you pick up the game. Both of you travel to the same location in your individual games, but encounter something surprising. Your brother comes across a group known as the Black Haxorus, while you come across one known as the Black Accelgor. Confused by this, you both wonder why this is the case; what was this group originally called? |black empoleon; the black empoleon ; black empoleon gang

  7. /startunratedhunt WarriorGallade | After switching tracks off Unova and playing through a bit of Pokemon Silver, your brother looks up and asks, "Do you know that certain Pokemon's gender affects whether they can learn some moves?" "Egg moves?", you respond. He replies, "Precisely. Now as you probably knew, taking Silver as an example, has a baby Pokemon inheriting its mother's species and the father's egg moves. Genderless Pokemon don't get any egg moves, kinda a bummer but makes sense. Now you see in the case of Staryu, there's a curious case of it being able to learn egg moves, assuming it had a gender, let's assume 50/50 ratio like most other Pokemon but the exact split doesn't matter as long as it can be either. Now, if you can figure out what those three moves were (alpha), I've got a neat story for you." | aurorabeam barrier supersonic | "Nicely done, I wonder why that was a thing? Lots of things happen just in one game. Anyhow, as for that story, I decided to try playing Crystal with a star-themed team of Starmie, Ledian and Cleffa. It was pretty fun, and I felt it a challenging experience. During that, I came across a location where every Pokemon that I could fight had their levels in multiples of 10, so level 10, 20, 30 and so on uptil 100. One of these Pokemon here stood out to me; no matter how many times it used the same Normal-type damaging move against my team, it never landed a critical hit! I'm sure of this; I fought the Pokemon over fifty times! If you've played Crystal in and out, you'll know." What Pokemon was he talking about? | lanturn | This brings to mind another experience you had with such situationally used one-time features. You continue, "There's this one other location in Crystal where you can find a NPC whose services are...kinda rendered useless in any mainline game after the one they appear in. Like, they tell you something that you don't need a NPC to check in later games." Your brother is slightly puzzled at this. "Hm, now that you mention I don't remember talking to that many NPCs when I played Crystal. What were they called again?" | pokeseer

  11. /startunratedhunt WarriorGallade | Midnight draws near, and you catch a glimpse of the full moon outside. This of course, reminds you of the Alola games and the endlessly long SOS chains you undertook to find the perfect Pokemon. Although, one memory sticks out in being strange. A certain Pokemon being able to call for itself as an ally in Ultra Moon, but it couldn't do so in Moon despite it being encounterable in both games. What was this Pokemon? | chansey | The various strategies you used or SOS chains came to mind as you relive the nostalgia and zone out. "Hello, earth to scavenger, you here?", your brother pops in. "Oh the usual, SOS chaining", you reply. "Huh, I was looking for an infinite way to just SOS chain. You wouldn't happen to know such a method, would you? Let's say I definitely want to be leading with my Starmie. What I'd like to do is after some initial setup, just click A on my Starmie's Surf, assuming I have infinite PP and wait till a shiny appears. Of course, no strategy is perfect so I'd just like it to be guaranteed on three; Pinsir, Cottonee and Dedenne at their natural level range in Ultra Sun, after assuring I've got a certain stat spread on my caller. Ignoring any Pokemon used to setup infinite PP for my Starmie and bringing my caller to 1HP, I'd need one of three Pokemon on my team to make this happen. What are they? (alpha) | araquanid dewpider jynx ; the specific setup involves the three skill swapping dry skin or entraining water absorb to a struggling foe which after surf will heal it for exactly the struggle recoil, always leaving it at 1HP. the 'specific' species refers to a caller having a HP stat such that HP % 4 = 0,1 | "Very impressive; It would be weeks before I came to that deduction myself! I'm proud of you. Now since I've quizzed you so long, you try asking me a question, yeah?", your brother happily responds. The praise gladdens you, as a suitable question magically manifests within your mind. "Alrighty, pop quiz time! Let's say I started a new game of Ultra Moon using my starter, Rowlet. I didn't obtain or use any other Pokemon, and defeated the Pokemon League with my fabulous Decidueye as the only team member. Now after this has happened, what's the one location I wouldn't be able to access in such a scenario?", you smugly ask. This question puzzles your brother as he wonders aloud "Hmm, I think and think but my brain does stay empty. Quite the quizzical quandary, mind telling me the answer?". Of course, you jump at the chance and explain it. What location were you talking about? | poke pelago

  15. /startunratedhunt WarriorGallade | "Evolution is a strange thing, yeah? Remember how Sliggoo could evolve at Ula'Ula Meadow despite no rain? Well, here's another strange one. Let's say I was playing Platinum. One of my Pokemon was able to evolve after leveling up in one of the battles with Commander Jupiter, but not in another, even if you assume I was the same level and gained the same experience in both fights, even if they happened at the exact same time. As a hint, the Pokemon I'm talking about could learn Sharpen and Supersonic in the TCG, and not in any mainline games. Who might that be, you reckon?" | nosepass | "You know, it's funny that you mention Nosepass, did you know it wasn't obtainable in Diamond or Pearl before the postgame? Not sure what they were thinking with that. It couldn't even evolve in Heart Gold and Soul Silver despite being introduced in the same generation!", you reply. "Heck, the two Johto games were much more limited when it came to Nosepass specifically. There was apparently a move that it was programmed to learn in them but never could. This move was even removed from its learnsets in all future games; not that it's a particularly great move on even Probopass but it's sad to see it lose out on a move like that." Your brother replies, "Ha, this must be the case of another misplaced Staryu. Seems like history repeats itself to varying degrees. I'm pretty sure I know this, and it's a neat fact." What move were you talking about? | headsmash| Saying that aloud makes your brother think more deeply for a moment. After some introspection, he responds "Well, that's a moment. Nosepass is limited through no fault of its own, and even despite that, it keeps on walking north. That's some dedication I wish I had, though I'm limited by my own laziness. Some things have the strangest of limits, that nobody can explain. For example, still staying in HGSS, your money was capped at 999999, and your BP at 9999; that's fair enough. Those numbers are the most their digits can contain. But then there's the strangest, most asinine item where you can't obtain more than 30 points on it! Like 30? Why not 99, that makes so much more sense?", he exasperatedly asks. "Well, who knows? It might be due to the fact that the most expensive prize obtainable with it is worth 30 points?", you shrugging reply. Although this does raise a question, what item was he talking about? | bluecard

  19. /startunratedhunt WarriorGallade | After rummaging through the crate for other Pokemon games you might have missed for a while, you come across a twin pack of Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee. That isn't what you were looking for, so you dig deeper and finally come across a cartridge of Blue Rescue Team. You laugh to yourself, thinking that the journey in finding the game was as eventful as exploring a Mystery Dungeon. You recall a time when you were exploring a dungeon's floor with no items in your inventory, but the floor was a singular room with a monster house! What was the first possible dungeon you could encounter such a situation? | silver trench | Monster houses aplenty, an interesting memory comes to mind when you were traveling through Tiny Woods and encountered a monster house! No matter what, because you had chosen to do something there before entering, every time you got to a certain floor and certain room, you'd see the monster house. What were you doing in Tiny Woods? | friend rescue | Your brother noticed the game in your hand and a confused expression comes over his face. "It's uh, pretty strange now that you mention monster houses. I was playing that game recently, exploring a dungeon and got a message on the log saying that an enemy Pidgeot used something, though it didn't look to be a move or item I recognized. I didn't see any Pidgeot in sight, so ignored the message. What do I see after that? The next room I walk into is chock-full of enemies, as many as an actual monster house, and I'm certain whatever Pidgeot used had to do with it. However the music hadn't changed to the typical monster house music so that certainly got me off guard." This description seems to ring a bell, as you get deja vu, you've been in this place before. What did the Pidgeot use to create this situation?| rollcall orb ; wild call

  23. /startunratedhunt WarriorGallade | Your brother continues, "Having played so much, I feel like Pokemon is my second nature, yeah? Despite anything that happens, some natures are special. If you've got a Pokemon with one of them and change it for another, you can never get it back. Pretty surprising, huh? As your next task you've got to figure out what these natures are (alpha)."| bashful docile hardy quirky | You answer with such immediacy that your brother is astonished , "Well, seems you were one step ahead of me on this one. Natures are significant, and for that I'd like to brew up some Pokeblocks to celebrate hatching this shiny Tyrogue in Emerald. Care to join in? I remembered you trading me some Pokemon from our earlier afternoon, and thought it a fun memento for the shiny Gligar as well." With a plan to make Tyrogue a contest star, you try to recall which of its moves could be used as a contest combination, as after all, that'd determine the flavor of Pokeblock you chose to create. Preferably, you'd want moves that get the same appeal bonus for a given contest type. After some thinking, you're able to decide. In order, answer with all of Tyrogue's moves that can be used successfully in a contest combination (alpha) and then the flavor you'd aim to create with Pokeblocks to maximize Tyrogue's chances of winning the contest linked to that combination. | rest sleeptalk snore sweet ; rest sleeptalk snore sweetness | Both of you have a fun party making Pokeblocks as the night flies by. As you're finishing trading the Tyrogue over to your copy of Sapphire, your brother jolts up with a sheepish look on his face. "Yeah, tiny thing I forgot about. Did you know Tyrogue can't learn a particular move despite being coded into its learnset? Like, if the Hoenn games, Fire Red and Leaf Green are all you had, the move's a lost cause. Well, while this was fixed later it's kinda comical how they made that sort of an oversight. Let's hope you didn't plan on using that move, yeah? Because there's no way you'd be getting it on that Tyrogue without sending it to Gen 4." This puzzles you even more, and you wonder, what was this move? | helpinghand

  28. /startunratedhunt WarriorGallade | "You know, times like this make me remember the question that we first started with that eventful afternoon.", your brother nostalgically says, even though it's only been a few hours. Both of you decide to settle this old-school, a Link Cable battle with you using Yellow and him using Red. You lead with your Sandslash and before your brother realizes, set up a Swords Dance and proceed to KO most of his Pokemon in succession, only getting poisoned from his Muk's Sludge and taking minimal damage. Down to his last Pokemon, Tangela, he hopes for victory. Through some miracle, his Tangela survives the incoming attack, and is able to use Sleep Powder, putting Sandslash to sleep despite the prior affliction! You're visibly taken aback by this, and the revelation breaks your concentration. What move did your Sandslash use on Tangela? | hyperbeam | With Sandslash defeated, the battle simply goes downhill for you. Somehow, his Tangela is able to defeat the rest of your team on its own, as you watch in shock, as you're down to your last Pokemon, a Wigglytuff. Shooting you a sympathetic look, he continues "After all the trouble you went through getting me this Tangela, I trained it to be the very best, like no one ever was. Now that being said, I do need to head back in a minute, so here's my last challenge for you. As you've seen, this Tangela is at +4 Special and +1 Evasion, from prior setup. Now if your Wigglytuff used a certain move on my Tangela and missed, from then on out it'd lose accuracy every time you chose to use it even if I did nothing. Playing with that kind of gamble is risky, so don't pick that move, aye?" What move is he talking about? | rage | Meta: With Wigglytuff hitting a critical Blizzard against all odds to faint the weakened Tangela, you're greeted with the rising sun in your victory. Since it's time, you say goodbye to your brother and pack up the Pokemon games from earlier. Before closing the crate, you take one peek back inside it - gems that made the past afternoon and this night a memorable one. You notice a new note on the lid of the crate "Thank you for getting this far. While not as connected, I'm truly glad you got to experience more of this than my past odyssey and hope the journey you had getting here was enjoyable. Only the meta puzzle is left; you can do it! -WarriorGallade". This note seems bizarre as you wonder who that random person is, but you notice a question on the back of the note as you bid the final farewell, and decide that'll help keep your mind off the sadness of him leaving. "If you've played an eventful afternoon, then this meta puzzle will be familiar. Various Pokemon games have been the subject of this series of hunts (link here to all earlier qs in this rally: https://pastebin.com/mEyxfCK1) Answer with all the mainline Pokemon games, officially released in english BEFORE GEN 8 and not on the that have not been mentioned by name at all during this hunt as independent words. (alpha) Remember, abbreviations as letters are not considered, but anything else in the hunt is fair game. if I used "or/OR" somewhere, it does not mean the game with Primal Groudon as a mascot was mentioned. | alphasapphire omegaruby ruby x y
