  1. from /hhg/ Helluva Hotel general #706
  2. ----------------------------------------
  3. >Husk having a "welcome drink" in his bar, something that, being free, doesn't need to be strong or even good, but manages to achieve both
  4. >Niffty baking cakes specifically to have on hand "in case we have company" the way your grandma would. Coffee cake, frosted cake, spice cake...
  5. >Vaggie making sure there are easy to follow "intake packets" of paperwork that make joining the hotel as easy as possible, with as few signatures needed as possible
  6.
  7. What else does the cast do for new guests, assuming they can actually make this shit function at all and not just constantly be at each other's throats?
  8. -
  9. That's such a heartwarming idea. I love that. I wanna try Husk's welcome cocktail.
  10. -
  11. >"Sloppy Joe Special, c. 1935"
  12. >Brandy, port, and pineapple, teased with orange liq and grenadine
  13. >Things no one really DISliked, even if they weren't favorites
  14.
  15. >Husk brought the barspoon up from the enormous pitcher and took a taste of the concoction
  16. >Tasty
  17. >He could think of other things he'd enjoy just as much if not more, but he wouldn't kick this cocktail of bed
  18. >He put the barspoon aside and reached for his coffee
  19. >Just coffee, not Irish coffee
  20. >He could really use a properly stiff drink, but not just yet
  21. >First he had to make sure that no one who walked through those double doors was going to question his skill as a barman
  22.
  23. >"Taste this"
  24.
  25. >Husk looked down to his side
  26. >Niffty stood there, flour dusting her apron, holding a thin sheet of spongy yellow something aloft on a folded paper towel
  27. >Husk grumbled a reply in his smoke-roughened voice, still not wholly awake
  28.
  29. >"Only if you taste this"
  30.
  31. >He dipped a shot glass into the mix and lowered it down to the red-headed cyclops with one clawed hand as he took the little piece of cake with the other
  32.
  33. >"Did I overdo it on the nutmeg?"
  34.
  35. >The gaudy feline demon chewed slowly, swallowed, and shook his head
  36.
  37. >"Nah"
  38. >"Did I cheap out too bad on the port"
  39.
  40. >Niffty swished her single mouthful of mixed drink about, swallowed, and shook her head back
  41.
  42. >"Nope"
  43. >"I think it's fine"
  44.
  45. >Husk shrugged and put the lid on the pitcher
  46. >Two for two
  47. >Not a bad rate of approval
  48. -
  49. >The sound of grey high heeled shoes on old wooden panels preceded the arrival of Vaggie
  50. >The scent of printer ink on hot paper joined the aromas of coffee and mixed liquors and fresh pastry
  51.
  52. >"Good morning"
  53.
  54. >The other two demons moved over to the bartop and fixed the moth demon with a sliver of cake and a sip of welcome-drink as she set down her stack of "simplified" paperwork
  55. >Vaggie spoke through a mouthful of confectionery
  56.
  57. >"Good batch today"
  58.
  59. >She polished off the thin sheaf of spongecake, then reached for the glass
  60.
  61. >"I've got it down to eight pages"
  62.
  63. >Certainly an improvement over what the "onboarding paperwork" had started as
  64.
  65. >"I hear eight's a lucky number in some places~"
  66.
  67. >Charlie slid up beside her girlfriend and stole a quick kiss on the cheek
  68. >Only half dressed; one suspender still undone, bowtie hanging loose around her neck, the pink jacket of her tux draped over one arm
  69. >She finished making herself presentable as the rest of her staff continued their prep work
  70.
  71. >"Do..."
  72.
  73. >The princess of hell cinched her bowtie down a little more
  74.
  75. >"Do you think anyone will come today?"
  76.
  77. >...
  78.
  79. >No one had an answer to that
  80. -
  81. >A feigned cough drew the other demons attention
  82.
  83. >"I uh, may have let slip where I was stayin' these days to some of my eehhh, let' call 'em "coworkers" "
  84. >"The ones I could trust not ta blab to loud anyway"
  85. >"Told 'em ya had an open door"
  86. >"They might drop by, if they can get away from the boss man long enough"
  87.
  88. >Angel Dust swished over to the bar and took a seat
  89. >Vaggie sighed
  90.
  91. >"And if they don't?"
  92.
  93. >The spider demon shrugged
  94.
  95. >"...more cake for us, I guess?"
  96.
  97. >Charlie cheerfully chimed in, lest anyone let their thoughts get too dreary this early in the day
  98.
  99. >"I put up a bunch of flyers too. I'm sure someone must have seen them!"
  100.
  101. >"...about that"
  102.
  103. >"Are we sure that's the best way to attract the sort of demons we're hoping for?"
  104.
  105. >"You remember what happened last time..."
  106. -
  107. >"Last time I was distracted, Darling."
  108.
  109. >A shadow emerged from the wall, slithered across the floor, then bulged out into three dimensions and took on a crimson tone, cervine features, and an implacable smile
  110.
  111. >"If we have anyone behave with such ungraceful behavior a second time, then I'll see to it that there will not be a third"
  112.
  113. >Alastor leaned against the bar, resting his elbow on the glossy wood and tapping the tip of his shoe against the floor, and accepted the taster sample of cake tendered by Niffty
  114.
  115. >"Just try not to break anything, right?"
  116.
  117. >The Radio Demon chuckled
  118.
  119. >"As you say, as you say"
  120.
  121. >Charlie shot a worried look at him, but forced a smile onto her face as she checked the clock
  122.
  123. >"Well, let's do this!"
  124.
  125. >The golden-haired demoness perked up and planted her hands on her hips
  126. >She strutted confidently over to the double doors, keys jingling in her hand
  127. >She slid the master key in and twisted her wrist, heavy bolts thunking into place in response
  128.
  129. >The Happy Hotel was open
  130.
  131. >All sinners welcome
  132.
  133. >All that was left was to wait
  134.
  135. -fin-
