  1. [05:53] * Janine_Richardson is sitting in medbay, after talking with Yui. Or Rei. Maybe the name was another way she was trying to escape whatever she had in her past. But talking with Yui about it... she still felt a great uneasiness about things. And about what other people thought about her.
  2. [05:54] * Janine_Richardson laughs a little bit to herself about that. A few years ago she didn't care less about what people thought about her. Or at least tried to pretend she didn't care... And then there was Nina... She needed to see about where everything had started. About... Project Hecate.
  3. [05:55] <macrophage> At least it's quiet. And on Jane's suggestion, there are a few foodstuffs left by Estelle. Yes, they all taste better than if Jane had made them.
  4. [05:55] * Janine_Richardson starts paging through her own medical files, not sure what she's looking for. Psych evals were a good place to start - it was one thing no person could do to themselves.
  5. [06:00] <macrophage> Psych evals. Problem. Documentation is anything but complete. Jane will find a few notes scribbled here and there upon "Normal development" and "Identification problem, should have hidden origins from her if at all possible", but that's it, really.
  6. [06:01] * Janine_Richardson sighs. "Figures Garcia couldn't even be bothered to keep decent notes. All those 'tests' probably went into some file she was collecting to win her a Nobel Prize."
  7. [06:02] * Janine_Richardson starts looking for anything on Project Hecate.
  8. [06:02] <macrophage> Jane pages to the more recent stuff, and finds a psych eval that's blank. "Stop reading this, Janey. It's not healthy to doubt yourself. Also, I hope you're taking care of yourself."
  9. [06:02] <macrophage> Seriously.
  10. [06:02] <macrophage> Jane just found a message from Garcia to Jane in the future.
  11. [06:03] * Janine_Richardson stops at that page. "...That... she...!"
  12. [06:03] * Janine_Richardson groans and spins around in the chair.
  13. [06:04] <Janine_Richardson> "How am I supposed to get easy insights if I can't even get a professional second opinion!"
  14. [06:04] <macrophage> "P.S. I probably won't be around for you to get revenge on when you read this. If I am, I owe you a huge apology for some of the things I've done."
  15. [06:07] * Janine_Richardson growls "Probably expected one of us to end up killing her." She sits back. "Well that's a dead end. Hm... I wonder if Nina had a file..."
  16. [06:07] <macrophage> That's all there is on that particular bit of info. As for stuff on Project Hecate...Jane reads a lot of stuff on cloning. There is nothing new. Notes on Nina Shepard, astronomical synch ratio, cloned...contaminated with Kachina material on purpose for a replacable, powerful pilot. Notes on how as Jane aged, her SR just didn't rise until she started piloting.
  17. [06:07] <macrophage> There is no file on Nina. There is no sign of Nina having ever existed, aside from the info in Project Hecate's files. Even then, she's only offhandedly mentioned, like a forgotten footnote.
  18. [06:09] * Janine_Richardson reads over things for a bit. Most of it is just... things she already knew. But the lack of a file on Nina makes that doubt creep up again.
  19. [06:13] * Janine_Richardson ...isn't terribly surprised at the file mentioning she was designed to be replaceable. She had certainly been trained as such. She sighs. At least the spare parts had come in handy.
  20. [06:13] <macrophage> There's things she already knew, and things she didn't. Like how she was intended to be an angel hybrid, or multiple, but only a single core formed, and her SR never rose until she started taking degradative damage from the core. For that matter, what of her replacability now?
  21. [06:17] <macrophage> There is more info. "It is unlikely that Angel Hybrids can successfully produce offspring, as gene therapy has proven to be 100% lethal in all test subjects. Angel hybrids themselves are not traditional hybrids, but humans that have developed with kachina-like metabiological factors."
  22. [06:17] * Janine_Richardson puts a hand to her belly as she's reading about the core. It was... very unlikely that anyone had installed a Jane Pond on the ship. And even less likely that anyone could put her core in a new body, given that she was currently humanity's greatest medical expert.
  23. [06:18] * Janine_Richardson squints. 100% of subjects? Then what did they give Yui?
  24. [06:18] <macrophage> "There is, however a chance, that the child develops into a normal human. Or a normal Kachina. Termination is authorized if such a thing happens."
  25. [06:19] <Janine_Richardson> "A normal... kachina." Her hand is still on her belly. That was... disturbing. Extremely so.
  26. [06:20] <macrophage> No other information is given, other than a bunch of physicals from Jane's childhood.
  27. [06:21] * Janine_Richardson glances over those, not really reading them. She can guess what they say.
  28. [06:24] <macrophage> Not much info there she hasn't seen. She might be interested in tracking her measurements throughout her youth, as they're very detailed(probably for plugsuit development).
  29. [06:25] * Janine_Richardson smiles sadly. Oh, the way she used to be tall. And have larger breasts. Those were the days.
  30. [06:26] * Janine_Richardson fondly remembers being able to reach things on the highest shelf without straining. Looking down on smaller people. Occasionally fantasizing about crushing them and/or a city.
  31. [06:27] <macrophage> Sadly, she's been reduced to being a little shorter than Cynthia. Which is probably unending frustration for her. Are there any other files she's interested in?
  32. [06:28] * Janine_Richardson thinks for a moment, then decides to get her mind off things by pulling up the most deeply personal information on her closest friends and family. Starting with Tony.
  33. [06:33] <macrophage> Tony's file. Father was an S2 Agent. Died in an incident on the job that isn't detailed. Mother committed suicide when he was very small. Part of Project Indigo: a eugenics project by NERV staff to raise a generation of S+ children. He was monitored as he was passed to his aunt, and later, an orphanage, where his adoptive parents were encouraged to adopt him after many years. Notes on his rather
  34. [06:33] <macrophage> crappy childhood are there, including a whole bunch of notes on "Withdrawn from society, etc. High initial synch readings, low growth. Utterly typical, except for mental issues."
  35. [06:35] * Janine_Richardson wonders if Garcia at least kept better notes on him. Probably not.
  36. [06:36] * Janine_Richardson ends up closing Tony's file after seeing a picture of his mother.
  37. [06:38] <Janine_Richardson> His adoptive mother, of course. One of the few adults that she had cared about. She had been such a kind person.
  38. [06:38] <macrophage> Garcia didn't take these notes on Tony. His adoptive mother did.
  39. [06:40] <macrophage> Whether that changes her opinion on the subject...who knows? There are plenty of things to look up in the meantime
  40. [06:41] * Janine_Richardson sits at the desk for a few moments, just thinking. Then decides she'd rather look at anything else. She jumps over to James' file.
  41. [06:47] <macrophage> James' file is...well, it's got lots of info. On his mother(there is no image, sadly), a whole section on artificial dna, and his upbringing. More extensive notes of his psychological development are given, seeing as how he took to the conditioning better. Notes are given on his performance and development. Notes on "SR tends to fluctuate wildly with emotional status, usually downwards.", and
  42. [06:47] <macrophage> "Questionable viability as a pilot due to signs of posttraumatic stress disorder."
  43. [06:47] <macrophage> "Unlikely that subject can reproduce. High chance of any offspring being unsuited for life, considering the hormone therapy necessary for his development."
  44. [06:49] * Janine_Richardson is actually surprised about some of that. She had always assumed he was the golden child, not... questionable.
  45. [06:51] <macrophage> There are a few notes commenting on just how much of a waste of funds both James and Hecate were. And how the James' creation was done behind Arroyo's back.
  46. [06:53] * Janine_Richardson kind of figured they were considered to be less than cost-effective. Otherwise there would have been more cloning and fewer schools. But... behind Arroyo's back?
  47. [06:54] <macrophage> Considering they used his wife's genetic material for some reason...is it any wonder? Needless to say, there's notes on how S+ is not recessive, but behaves like it, as if it were a metabiological feature that has a strong genetic component, and Selma Arroyo was S+.
  48. [06:56] * Janine_Richardson blinks. The... commander's wife? She wondered if James knew. There wasn't any point in telling him. It might depress him more to know.
  49. [06:59] <macrophage> All this information, is it really healthy for Jane to read so much about people's pasts considering everything?
  50. [07:00] <Janine_Richardson> Of course it is. Besides, she still has one other file to read. Ai's. Might as well complete the set.
  51. [07:06] <macrophage> Ai, also part of Project Indigo. Despite what she believes, her 'stepmother' is actually her biological mother. It was found that several politicians were S+. This was convenient to NERV. Not wanting to keep the child, Ai was foisted upon a NERV staffer who promptly lost her shit for some reason and ended up homeless and addicted to a number of unhealthy substances, scraping by to keep from
  52. [07:06] <macrophage> starving. Intervention was advised against. When the woman died(and Ai saw her die) from emphysema and tuberculosis, S2 Agents brought the girl to her biological father, and guilted him into taking care of her. There are more notes on "Withdrawn personality, keeps distance from others. Inflated ego", and many others taking note of an incredibly high Synch Ratio. Her biological mother, who soon
  53. [07:06] <macrophage> after married her biological father, decided to keep the sham about Ai's origins a secret to both father and daughter. Ai was the first choice for pilot candidacy on the list, and was chosen early. Much disappointment about her enthusiasm for anything but the actual training and piloting abounded.
  54. [07:08] * Janine_Richardson reads over this for a while. Unlike James and Tony, she really never knew much about Ai's past.
  55. [07:09] <Janine_Richardson> "I guess all of us really did win the lottery with happy childhoods..."
  56. [07:09] <macrophage> To be fair, there's also extensive notes on just how nice Ai's father was to her.
  57. [07:09] <macrophage> Ai just wasn't responsive to them. Probably due to the trauma she experienced from ages 0-4.
  58. [07:11] * Janine_Richardson closes the files down and eats some of the snack food around her.
  59. [07:12] <macrophage> It tastes better than anything Jane has experienced recently. One might believe that this girl has some sort of chubby magic flowing through her veins.
  60. [07:12] * Janine_Richardson idly wonders if they chose pilot candidates purely based on childhood trauma. Poor Gerald probably lost three parents and a puppy, or something.
  61. [07:13] * Janine_Richardson also *really* needs to find out how Estelle makes these cakes. Maybe she had photographic food memory. Tasteographic.
  62. [07:14] <macrophage> This is a possibility, considering that from what you think, food creation might have something to do with memory.
  63. [07:15] * Janine_Richardson resolves to try creating the one food she had eaten so many times she knew the taste perfectly. Cambells tomato soup.
  64. [07:16] * Janine_Richardson wishes she had eaten enough steak to have the taste memorized.
  65. [07:16] <macrophage> Oh, how unfortunate to be raised on that fucking soup. Is she done with the files for now, or is she on a soup mission?
  66. [07:16] * Janine_Richardson goes to get soup. Enough with depressing files.
  67. [07:17] <macrophage> Jane ends up in the cafeteria. Estelle is currently with Melanie. Both look to be in subdued, but not terrible moods.
  68. [07:17] * Janine_Richardson tries making some soup, then goes to sit down next to them.
  69. [07:18] <macrophage> Soup is made. In one of those really annoying soup at hand(tm) cans. Melanie comments first. "Uhh. What's -that-?"
  70. [07:18] <Janine_Richardson> "...Soup?"
  71. [07:19] <macrophage> Estelle tilts her head slightly. "It's wierd that it recreates the packaging."
  72. [07:19] <Janine_Richardson> "If it didn't, this would have made a really big mess."
  73. [07:20] <macrophage> "Wouldn't it just come out in a.....ooooh, soup at hand. Ugh.", Melanie frowns like this is a really lame name for the soup.
  74. [07:21] * Janine_Richardson smiles. "When I was growing up, this was pretty much all I ate. I think it's because they were a major corporate sponsor, or contract, or something."
  75. [07:21] <macrophage> "That sounds...", Estelle says. Melanie completes the sentence. "Gross."
  76. [07:23] * Janine_Richardson says "It's not that bad..." she takes a sip.
  77. [07:23] <macrophage> Tasteless.
  78. [07:24] * Janine_Richardson sighs. "Great. Just hot water."
  79. [07:25] <macrophage> Well, it doesn't taste like water. But it tastes less like tomato soup. "Everything tastes bad here.", Estelle will say, while Melanie shrugs her shoulders. "Tastes fine to me.", but of course, she hadn't eaten in god knows how long.
  80. [07:25] * Janine_Richardson says "Maybe I'm just bad at making food. I tried making cakes and they don't come out nearly as good as Estelle's."
  81. [07:25] <macrophage> Estelle makes a blank face. "I don't get what you're saying."
  82. [07:27] * Janine_Richardson says "Look, I'll show you..."
  83. [07:27] * Janine_Richardson goes and makes a (small) cake.
  84. [07:28] <macrophage> Estelle watches this...then gets up and makes a small cake as well.
  85. [07:28] <macrophage> "...Okay?"
  86. [07:28] * Janine_Richardson says "Now taste mine."
  87. [07:29] <macrophage> Estelle eats the Janecake. And makes a face.
  88. [07:29] <Janine_Richardson> "Yeah."
  89. [07:29] <macrophage> "But mine's gonna taste bad, too.", and to emphasize it, she tries her own, and..."...well, it's still bad."
  90. [07:30] * Janine_Richardson says "It's a lot better than mine. Here, Melanie, you try them."
  91. [07:31] <macrophage> Melanie tries both. "The medicine I'm on makes me not want to even eat."
  92. [07:31] <macrophage> She doesn't seem to prefer either.
  93. [07:32] * Janine_Richardson says "But you can see what I mean, right, Estelle?"
  94. [07:33] <macrophage> "...I guess?"
  95. [07:34] * Janine_Richardson sighs. "I wish I knew how this all worked. Maybe an engineer needs to realign the heisenburg compensators or clear the pattern buffer or something."
  96. [07:35] <macrophage> Both girls stare at Jane like she's some sort of secret genius and they are horrified by the revelation.
  97. [07:35] <Janine_Richardson> "... what?"
  98. [07:36] <macrophage> "I thought they just had you doing medicine.", Estelle says.
  99. [07:37] <Janine_Richardson> "That's right. Fast-tracked into medical. I'm still not sure why..."
  100. [07:38] <macrophage> "..You're just making stuff up, right?", Melanie asks.
  101. [07:38] <Janine_Richardson> "I'm not making stuff up. They're real terms..." there's a pause. "...from Star Trek."
  102. [07:40] <macrophage> Both girls give Jane a look like they disapprove of her nerdiness.
  103. [07:41] <Janine_Richardson> "Tony really likes it, so we used to watch it together."
  104. [07:45] <macrophage> They continue to give her doubtful stares. "....That kind of stuff is depressing, seeing how we are now.", Melanie states.
  105. [07:50] <Janine_Richardson> "Well... Smith is no Kirk, but we're still here, sailing towards the Undiscovered Country..." She looks up for a moment. "Star Trek was about hope that the future would be a better place. I... still think it can be."
  106. [07:52] <macrophage> "Maybe.", Melanie replies.
  107. [07:55] * Janine_Richardson smiles. "Sorry. I guess I'm in a strange mood."
  108. [07:57] <macrophage> "We all are.", Estelle laments.
  109. [08:00] * Janine_Richardson says "How is everyone doing?"
  110. [08:00] <macrophage> "I'm okay.", Estelle answers. Melanie shrugs.
  111. [08:04] <Janine_Richardson> "Well, it shouldn't be long now. We'll finish this fight soon."
  112. [08:06] <macrophage> Neither girl comments on what might lie ahead.
  113. [08:10] * Janine_Richardson looks down. "Sorry. Well, um... I'm just going to head back to medbay." She stands up and waves.
  114. [08:12] <macrophage> "I'll be back to help later.", Estelle offers as jane leaves.
