- (I cut this out of the reddit post for brevity)
- ## present setup
- * a Cudy 4g/LTE router (end of life) strapped to the passenger visor of my campervan. Ants aren't detachable so it's in the place with the clearest "view" of the outside.
- * a SFT1200 Opal wifi router for repeating wifi when there is some around (effectively EOL since the SiFlower chip means it's stuck at OpenWRT 18.06). Shame on me for not realizing that before I bought it. Never again.
- * I don't use VPN, NAS, or similar firmware features.
- ## upgrade plans
- I would l like to replace these with a single unit
- * that is **more likely to pull a usable signal** in remote areas or under otherwise-challenging reception conditions. External cell ants will likely help with this.
- * from **glinet**, since I really like the interface (especially the wifi repeating section)
- * still **supported by updates** for the next couple of years at least
- * **physical eSim** support would be useful because I am sometimes in areas not covered by my main carrier (Verizon/VIsible). I'd like to be able to pick up a different service while in that area.
- * I don't need an internal battery since the camper has a robust 12v power system

- ^1 according to [the firmware versions page](https://www.gl-inet.com/support/firmware-versions/) the x750 firmware is built on the ``Native OpenWRT`` SDK and the x3000's eSim firmware is built on the ``MTK``SDK. The MTK routers are a minority in the glinet lineup and seem to lag behind the native openwrt builds. More importantly, the only [eSim supporting x3000 firmware](http://download.gl-inet.com/firmware/x3000/esim/) is from 2024. I do NOT want another Opal situation, so maybe I'm being overly skittish.
