- Their second dropship goes roaring overhead, firing a series of man-sized parcels from modified missile pods. The slender packages unfold, maneuvering thrusters snapping like firecrackers, and four legs emerge from each. One of them craters the ground right in front of Becker, pelting him with broken rock. He knows his personnel transponder kept him safe from a parcel kill, but for fuck’s sake, they dropped it a little too close.
- The shivering National Dynamics SunSpot “Good Boy” straightens up in front of him, camera lenses whirring to life. Spent smoking rocket motors, each no bigger than a football, slough from its form. A pair of sealed dishes eject from either side with a charging whine.
- “All fireteams, Percival. I’m starting the extended sweep now.”
- The Good Boy takes off like a greyhound, flowing over the treacherous terrain in graceful, mechanical bounds. The others follow suit from their own landing points, spiraling outward with ear-splitting, computerized chirps. The acoustic weapons mounted on either side are powerful enough to burst eardrums at a hundred yards, but they do an excellent job of topo mapping, as well.
