- =The Colours of Magic=
- Mana, the arcane energy that Witches use to power their spells, comes in six different kinds. These are referred to as “colours”, although they are not, in the strictest sense, visible. Some workers of magic ardently subscribe to a philosophy based around the workings of a single colour of mana, while others think that mana has no ethical or moral predisposition, seeing the different colours as analogous simply to different tools.
- -Red Mana-
- Red is the colour of immediacy and simplicity. Red spells focus on accomplishing a simple goal, and are generally straightforward. Red magic is fairly versatile, and is quite often the chosen school of the dabbling mage for its undemanding mana cost.
- -Orange Mana-
- Orange is the colour of energy. While new mages refine its principles for spells that deliver heat or light in an organised manner, the purists stand by fireballs and lightning bolts. The cost of orange spells tends to depend on how effective you hope them to be, but they can be deceptively expensive. Many a novice witch has knocked themselves unconscious with the effort of a simple fireball.
- -Yellow Mana-
- Yellow is the colour of creation and artifice. In a relaxed environment, it is easily the least demanding colour of magic, as a spell can be fuelled incrementally at the caster’s leisure. On a time limit, though, yellow magic’s predisposition towards a sedentary pace makes it draining to cast. Nevertheless, its constructs have appreciable reality and longevity, and it almost rivals red mana in versatility.
- -Green Mana-
- Green is the colour of growth and life. It has an inextricable link with nature, and as such often feels bestial or botanical. It offers great reward tomorrow for little payment now. Like yellow magic, green magic is often slow to act, but its effects take hold with strength. Its bond to life makes it healing spells unrivalled.
- -Blue Mana-
- Blue is the colour of change and fluidity.
- -Purple Mana-
- Purple is the colour of emotion and power.
- =Patrons=
- Patrons are the various figures of power who grant most witches their mana in exchange for some service or sacrifice to them.
- -Baron Samedi-
- Head of the Guédé family of Loa, Baron Samedi is a crude but charming lord of the dead, as well as being a giver of life to those who he sees fit.
- Mana: Crass (Purple), Merciful (Green)
- Top and Tails - Dressing consistently and stylishly in purple and black earns a single point of Crass Mana per day from Baron Samedi to those he patronises.
- Party Favour – Placing in a wooden box any assortment of cigars, rum, black coffee, and grilled peanuts, closing the lid, and verbally offering them to Baron Samedi grants Crass and Merciful Mana in exchange if he accepts the offering. The actual amount depends on the quality and quantity of the offering (subject to GM fiat), but a general guideline is 1 point of Merciful Mana or 2 points of Crass Mana per $50 spent.
- Barter with the Baron – By performing a ten-minute voodoo ritual, you can allow Baron Samedi to manifest before you (DC 20 if he is willing or well-disposed towards you, DC 50 if he is not). Through this channel, you may arrange for an amount of Merciful or Crass Mana on the spot in exchange for an immediate service, or you can set up a regular deal. After five minutes or as soon as you allow him, the Baron can cease manifesting as he pleases.
