- before there was light in the world, it was simply dark and cold and empty, except for the spark of life carried by the gods that came to this world. it wasn’t difficult to steal it - gods can be as lazy and easily distracted as anyone else. consider that people are, after all, made in their image. when the mage stole it, she had all the intention in the world to share it with everyone equally. the gods, angered at the idea that their collateral was now wrenched from their hands, made threats and raged against the gall of the one who would dare to steal from them. they threatened to destroy the world they had created, threatened to take it all back to start over again, never stop hunting until it was found and returned. and they tried bribery, sweet and tempting. if the mage was to return it, bring it back with her, she could earn herself a seat amongst them and rise above her fellows, power beyond imagining.
- none of these seemed like particularly good options to her. she didn’t think the gods would actually destroy their creation. no one wants to burn the thing they worked so hard to create. but power, while it has its appeals, wasn’t tempting either. what can you do with power when you have to leave everything you’ve ever loved behind. rather than give the prize up, or keep it hidden for herself, she threw it to the stars to land amongst them - bright enough to see well enough on a clear night, yet still too far away for even a god to reach and take back.
- no solution is perfect, really.
