  3. Once meek, and in a perilous path,
  4. The just man kept his course along
  5. The vale of death.
  6. Roses are planted where thorns grow,
  7. And on the barren heath
  8. Sing the honey bees.
  9. Then the perilous path was planted,
  10. And a river and a spring
  11. On every cliff and tomb,
  12. And on the bleachèd bones
  13. Red clay brought forth;
  14. Till the villain left the paths of ease,
  15. To walk in perilous paths, and drive
  16. The just man into barren climes.
  17. Now the sneaking serpent walks

  27. necessary to Human existence.
  28. From these contraries spring what the religious call Good and Evil. Good is the passive that obeys Reason.
  29. Evil is the active springing from Energy.
  30. Good is Heaven. Evil is Hell.
