- I have to get something off my chest.
- So roughly a few months ago, I came across this weird UNDERTALE fangame, called "Hazzy Remake," that seems to be based off an already existing game by the same name, just without the 'Remake' tagline of course. This supposed, remake of this already obscure UNDERTALE fangame, appears to be developed in the game engine RPG Maker VX Ace, judging by the Game.rgss3a file in the game's root directory.
- I feel like this game, or at least this build of the game, appears to potentially be a prototype version, judging by the text that appears when booting up that says this is an early-access build of the game and that not all content would be fully completed.
- The game lasted roughly 15~ minutes, well at the pace I played it at.
- Strangely, despite the game's folder name, the name mentioned inside the game was always just 'HAZZY,' strange but might've just been a stylish choice.
- On startup, the game presented you with 3 options: New Game, Load Game, and Quit.
- Their names are pretty self-explanatory so I'm not going to tell you what they do, it'd be unnecessary filler.
- I started the game and it presented me with some sort of character creator, though, my options didn't seem to matter as I was thrown into the game with an existing character, but the name I did input was kept. Anywho, after loading the game, proceeding to the next room leads to a strange hallway that probably was meant to house a character, but I just shrugged it off as a thing this version of this game probably didn't have.
- I proceeded to the next room, which seemed pretty normal, well, aside from the music probably being pitched down from what was probably used in the game. I continued on, there was a dummy-like character that served as the battle tutorial, though, I think you don't have to complete the battle to continue forward in the game. I continued onto the next room in the game, which was this strange long hallway, going down it was obvious to continuing.
- Interestingly enough, before I could leave the hallway, I got a textbox that said I obtained 2 key items that were a cell phone and bestiary item. I presumed they were likely unfinished as with most of this game, as no other characters have appears thus far within my gameplay. I tried using both and textboxes popped up that just said "finish when i have the time to." Likely just the dev reminding themselves to finish these items when needed.
- I continued onto the next room and strangely, the phone item went off and displayed this dialog:
- Phone: "Hello?"
- Phone: "Is this Ghost Fox?"
- My Character: "Uh no," (automatically continued, maybe I got cut off.)
- Phone: "Alright, remember the code."
- Phone: "rhaagfl-jkkws.gjhiomm.siu"
- That's when the strange interaction ended. Weird, I still have yet to decipher what that text, or code could be. I feel like it could be a website of sorts due to the periods present throughout this "code." Anywho, I tried to shrug that off, this game didn't seem to be any normal UNDERTALE fangame I had played before, that's for sure.
- The gameplay was pretty boring. Not a single character popped up in the bulk of the game I played. Not even a battle, which I assumed would've happened eventually as this WAS an UNDERTALE fangame after all, so that definitely threw me off. At one point I think the game was going to finally do a battle, but it turned out to be a fake-out battle, bummer.
- Towards the end of the area, I came across this house that I think was supposed to house a character, but once again, like the entire game so far, nothing was here in the slightest.
- In this house, there were 5 rooms you could explore on the ground-floor. Strangely, there was a barred door near the bedrooms in this house. Interacting with it didn't give me much, just said "Locked..."
- In the kitchen area, there was a book on the far-left of the room that actually contained real dialog aside from weird or placeholder text. The book had only 1 page, and dare I say it did have some text inside it.
- The text inside of the page read as follows:
- "In the walls."
- "It's in the walls, I know it is."
- "Under the floor."
- "I can feel the vibrations of something small moving."
- "Residing in the ceiling."
- "Where it sleeps peacefully."
- "Down here, I live in fear."
- "In the walls."
- "Under the floors."
- "In the walls."
- "Under the floors."
- "Fubhyqa'g lbh or fpnerq?"
- Pretty weird, probably from some paranoid character or just some lore nugget the developer added. Not sure what cipher this text may be in, unfortunately.
- The rest of the house was pretty empty. I couldn't go downstairs in the house's foyer, as dialog said I was "missing something." I checked around the house again and I found a hazmat suit and katana contained inside a chest found in the first bedroom. Collecting these two items allowed me to proceed downstairs into the house.
- Down in the house's basement as I want to call it, was also pretty silent and empty. I feel like I may be crazy, but I feel like the game was getting darker the more I proceeded into this basement-esque area. At the end of the basement, for some reason my movement and menu buttons didn't work. The game kind of stalled for about 30 seconds, and at that point, I thought the game got softlocked. I wasn't surprised if it was that possibility, I've made my share of games in RPG Maker and maybe the developer of this game had an event set to 'Autorun' but didn't put anything inside the event.
- Turns out I was completely wrong.
- After the game stalled, a strange infobox popped up on my actual Windows desktop that said "Do you wish to continue?" I thought it was weird, so I just pressed the only option, which was OK, after that, another infobox opened that said "If you press OK, you consent to proceeding in the meeting." I thought that was strange once again, but, I ultimately decided to press OK.
- After this, a text box opened that said "Please enter your full legal name." I typed in my name, and the game continued. At this point, I wanted to close the game already, but, since I felt like this wasn't just fluff in the game, I continued on.
- Afterwards, the same hallway that I saw near the beginning of the game appeared again, I went through the hallway and... that seemed to be the end of the game?
- I forgot what I did afterwards, but I did know that I was pretty confused. I opened the game again and, strangely enough, when I loaded my save, it prevented me from playing, as it instantly closed the game. I tried removing my save file but it still led to the same outcome each time I started a new game. It'd be cool if maybe this weird-ass prototype of an UNDERTALE fangame I don't even know about had more to do.
- Oh well, hell if I can do anything about it.
